Hello Jennifer

I want to wish you a very Happy Christmas and may 2012 be your best year ever.

I just finished reading Lessons from Madame Chic and I found it beautifully written. It was amusing and your descriptions are marvelous.
I so agree with you on so many points, perhaps we are related!

Merry Christmas Jennifer, and doesn't Gatsby look dapper in his bow-tie? I love his eyes at the end of the video - looking at your sideways. So cute.

Love your blog and just ordered your book, but I'm also very curious about the French style of child-rearing. My child is in his first year at a French immersion school, and his teachers are lovely and extremely well-qualified and competent. So far, I'm amazed and impressed, but my online queries of French parenting paints a less than child-friendly approach, at least in comparison to my American sensibilities; they seem more "Tiger mom" than nurturing (though maybe that's a good thing, so the debate goes). Your a mom now. What do you think? Any parenting "comme les francais" planned?

Sorry -- that of course should be "You're a mom now." That's what happens when one posts comments at midnight!

Hello everyone- thank you for your holiday wishes! I hope you are all having a great break and wish you all happy new year!

Anonymous- Thank you for your question regarding French child rearing. This is a subject I didn't pay too much attention to when I was in Paris as I was a college student when I was there and raising kids was the last thing on my mind :) But having said that I do have several French friends that are parents and do see some differences in their parenting techniques. For example several French parents have told me that once their babies reach 11 lbs that they are ready to sleep through the night. I've had three separate French parents tell me that they trained their babies to sleep at 11 lbs (usually around 3 months). This intrigues me because I struggled with sleep issues with my first child for the first 8 months! Their babies all seem healthy and happy so... who knows? The other difference I see is they tend to feed their toddlers and children the same food that they eat- which I am sure does not make the children prone to pickiness with regards to food later in life. This is all food for thought. Perhaps I will do a post on it after more investigation :) Thanks for your question.

That is very interesting. Both my babies were more than 9 lbs at birth (!) and reached 11 lbs by around the first month. They definitely weren't ready to sleep through the night. I would guess weight is but one of the indicators of readiness. What I am dying to know is how Madame Chic made her 3-5 course meals in an out-of-the-way kitchen when her kids were small--amidst the antiques and with limited TV! If you can get find out what her secret was, you will be my hero! :)

I've just finished your book, having asked for it as a Christmas gift. I couldn't put it down - felt like I was in France again myself. As a teacher of French, I really appreciate the cultural insight you have helped others appreciate. Now to the closet to pare down and organize!
