Not Snacking (or trying not to, anyway)
I'm pretty good about not snacking. This hasn't always been the case. I used to be a chronic snacker. It's like I was afraid of hunger so I never allowed myself to get to that place.
I love the quote that YouTube viewer, Sassylarita, brought to my attention, "Hunger is the best seasoning". The quote originates from Socrates, who actually said, "The best sauce for food is hunger." And it is so true. How many of us dull our appetite by snacking too much before meals? Since dropping my snacking habit I have started to enjoy my meals a whole lot more.
I'm not completely cured of my snacking tendencies though. Lately I've noticed one very curious habit of mine, which I discuss in this week's video, Not Snacking. I was a chronic snacker - I think it's deeply ingrained in our culture and then I read Bringing up Bebe, which gave me a different perspective which was reinforced by Lessons from Madame Chic! BUT - I am a dinner cooking snacker!!! I like to have a glass of wine while I cook dinner and what goes with a lovely glass of wine? Brie (my personal kryptonite) or Camembert, of course! You make an excellent point though about snacking taking away from the enjoyment of a meal. Something I will keep in mind. Now, if only I could get my kids to appreciate that and get their heads out of the pantry!
ReplyDeleteI often end up snacking a lot too, but only because I don't really have mealtimes down! Breakfast is such a rush for me, I end up eating something at work, and dinner is so random with my husband and I's schedules. Must get this under control!
ReplyDeleteThis is a hard issue. Many diet programs require you to snack, on particular and healthy things of course...
ReplyDeleteI also cook dinner many nights and when I do [especially if I am drinking wine] I snack while cooking. Cheese is my favorite. At least its protein!!

ReplyDeleteYour point though is totally correct. By avoiding snacking you not only enjoy food more but keep your calories under control. So avoiding them is the best idea.

Soup? Whaaa?
ReplyDeleteI've found that if there's candy around, I'll snack, whereas nothing else (crackers, chips, desserts, fruit, cheese) really makes me want to snack outside of meal times. My solution has been to avoid purchasing candy unless it can be consumed in one serving and won't linger around the house. It's very true that snacking isn't chic, though - it always makes me feel unhealthy and guilty.
ReplyDeleteAbout the soup - maybe they wanted to mention a sweater set wish was a green pea soup colour and, according to Madame Chic - unflatering to your skin tone. It feels like they wrote a review without reading the book :)

ReplyDeleteRegarding the soup in the review... I am perplexed. Many of you have said maybe they meant 'soap'. Even if they meant soap, I never write about sharing soap in the book. It's so bizarre!

I have the blood sugar issue you mention in your video. If I go too long between meals, I get shaky, sweaty, and faint-y! In order not to gain weight by snacking, I keep protein items around, like almonds/turkey jerky/hummus/etc.
