Ten-Item Wardrobe Talk-Through Spring 2014 (and Stella & Dot Giveaway!)
Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to last week's ten-item wardrobe video. My inbox has been filled with your wonderful comments and, of course, all of your questions. Because I've received so many comments and emails I am not able to individually respond to each one, but hopefully this week's video will answer many of your questions. This week's video is a talk through of the garments and shares with you my inspiration for this year's wardrobe and examines old and new pieces.
If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur (make sure you subscribe!).
For links to every item pictured in this video, visit my original ten-item wardrobe post here.
Here are some FAQs from viewers:
Gina asks: Do you have a summer 10 item wardrobe too? Spring has begun here, but it 60 degrees. When summer begins for you, will this lovely spring collection still work for you in summer?
This wardrobe will take me to the end of summer. As summer approaches, I will probably use the sweaters less and less. I might purchase one or two items in the summer to supplement my wardrobe, or I might not. Last summer the only garment I purchased was the Anthropologie water color dress you see in this year's video, for example.
Lilly asks: I was wondering if you could tell us what is this beautiful music you have in the video? Thanks again for all the wonderful posts over the years :)
If you are ever curious about the music featured in my videos, or about any item featured in a video, always check my blog post or the info box below the YouTube video. I always credit an item when I can. If the specific item is no longer available online, I provide a link for the brand or retailer. The music in the ten-item wardrobe video is royalty-free and copyright-free music purchased from pond5.com and is called "Paris Love". Thank you Lilly!
Evaline asks: Your lip colour here is lovely for spring...would you mind sharing the name with us?
Many people asked about my lip color. The video was shot over a few days and I am wearing different lip colors in different shots. I used the Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo No. 6 in some shots and By Terry Bitten lip gloss in others.
Sara asks: Can I ask what you layer under sheer tops, like your Equipment blouses? A cami? In white, or do you try to find one that matches your skin tone? I have the worst time solving the "sheer issue."
I have several camisoles in beige, white and black. I find the beige ones that are closest to my own skintone look best under a slightly sheer blouse.
Alonememe asks: I don't really get this idea of extras. I understand when it comes to tank tops, underwear etc. - you need them to build the outfit, but having few tops that you wear as normal outfit is really having 20 or 30 core outfits. Could you please explain this? Why do you separate core items from extras? Is this more handy? :)
Core items vs. extras are a great way to organize your wardrobe. Think of your core items as telling a story and the extras accent this. The core items are the major items, the foundation that builds the wardrobe. The extras compliment the core.

I just posted a link to your video a few minutes ago. I hope you'll get some new visitors to your site.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Inspiring as always.
ReplyDeleteThis last video finally got me to purchase your book! I use jewelry to liven up older pieces, and to stand out from the usual ie. a dressy pr of diamond and sapphire earrings with a t-shirt and jeans.
ReplyDeleteI use jewelry to add interest to simple tops.
ReplyDeleteMy jewelry is signature--a simple gold circle necklace I always wear, a few styles of earrings I rotate, etc.
ReplyDeleteI like to use jewelry to add color or sparkle to an outfit!
ReplyDeleteLOVE that Stella and Dot necklace! And I think the ten-item wardrobe is so smart. I typically end up wearing only about that many items in heavy rotation each season anyway, so it makes sense to consider them carefully and spend wisely, rather than impulse-buy a lot of cheaper items and see what sticks.
ReplyDeleteI have very few pieces of jewelry as I'm a minimalist and pretty much only buy what pieces will go with several outfits. I have a gold/ruby necklace with earrings and ring, and bracelet, and I have a pearl necklace. I also have gold hoops which go with nearly anything. Your book is a favorite with me for this reason. I've adapted my wardrobe as well. Can't wait for the new book!
ReplyDeleteI I use jewelry to totally transform the look of an outfit so that I can wear it more frequently yet still feel excited and fresh about the look.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a jewelry video!
ReplyDeleteI use necklaces to dress up simple tops and large earrings when I want to stand out
ReplyDeleteI use jewelry to stay current. I wear lots of basics and use accessories to update.

ReplyDeleteSimple chic. I just wear my wedding and engagement rings. I think that's pretty sexy with any item(s) in my wardrobe. ;)
ReplyDeleteI use jewelry as a signature--my great grandmother's sand casted silver bracelet and ring worn every day with everything!
ReplyDeleteIn addition, I use jewelry as a conversation starter--fish bone earrings, copper salmon earrings, kokopelli earrings, and fair trade paper beaded necklaces.
I love using statement jewellery - its an essential part of my wardrobe. The best bit - jewellery doesn't care if you accidentally popped on a few pounds over winter.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the further descriptions and tips Jennifer. I'm working towards my first autumn capsule wardrobe, I've been decluttering heavily so most of what I wear will be what I own but curated. I may add an item or two. I am a mad knitter so when I want a luxe top I make it from fabulous yarn -- this makes it more affordable and custom fits the item.
ReplyDeleteI wish you could bring your picture to our art shop for framing but I guess Australia is a bit far to travel. ;)
well, jewelry can definitely make an outfit better! I always wear at least 1 jewelry, either pairing it with a plain shirt to flaunt it or with a dress.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteaaaah again i fell in love with your costume designed handbag. The color and design you have chosen are so right. So lovely Jennifer.
But how about your 'spring/summer' scarves? Or do you not wear any?
I hope I can add a lightwheight one to my 'not so 10-item scarve wardrobe' when I'm in Paris this saturday.
My most loved scarves at the moment:
- black and white cotton 'leopard' scarve
- black/dark green/purple/dark blue/white ombre silk scarve
- cotton black scarve with several colored roses
- dark orange, dark green and white silk scarve (this one is the most airy one)
About my jewelry: I have just a few: a statement necklace, a cuff bracelet and two pair of petite earrings. I don't wear them at the same time. The cuff bracelet and statement necklace I only wear when it's spring or summer or when i go to a party to spice up my simple tops.
Have a lovely day today!
I use jewellery to enliven my simple wardrobe - I love the slightly muted greens of this necklace, as gentler colours suit me better now that I am going grey :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful wardrobe, Jennifer! Using jewelry is a great way to spice up simple pieces.
ReplyDeleteI wear studs every day. I'm trying tot wear more necklaces, because I think that necklaces can really make an outfit look complete! :)
ReplyDeleteI have basic jewelry pieces that never go out of style. A strand of pearls, a long gold chain necklace, a sterling silver long necklace, diamond studs, pearl studs, gold hoops, stack of sterling bangle bracelets, and my favorite piece is my gold charm bracelet.
ReplyDeleteI love Stella and Dot! I do not own a piece yet, but I love necklaces and usually only wear one piece of jewlery at a time. Right now a wear a dainty little diamond necklace my father bought me when I was a teen. I wear it everyday.
ReplyDeleteHow do I use jewelry to express my style? I use my jewelry to reflect my mood. A colorful necklace or dangly earrings if I'm feeling playful; a strand of pearls when I'm feeling reserved; gold knot earrings for everything in between!
ReplyDeleteI love to use jewelry to complete my overall look!
ReplyDeleteI use jewelry to add "pop" to my outfits. I like one stand-out piece for each outfit so it never feels overdone.
ReplyDeleteI use jewelry to add colour and texture to a simple neckline.
ReplyDeleteI use my jewelry to add colour, or sparkle to my classic outfits.
ReplyDeleteI like to use jewelry to express my sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteI like to use jewelry to show my mood...bright colors when I'm happy, delicate pieces when I want to relax, etc.
ReplyDeleteWow! Thank you for all the inspiration. Love your book and your website! I use jewelry to add some interest and individuality to my look, since I wear a uniform!
ReplyDeleteI definitely use jewelry and scarves to totally change the look of a simple blouse.
ReplyDeleteThe green necklace is lovely and springlike. I love your spring wardrobe choices - so ladylike and current as well. I have read your book several times and appreciate your approach to life.
ReplyDeleteI use my jewelry to dress up a casual outfit!
ReplyDeleteI like using jewelry to help create my signature look: classic pearl earrings, my diamond and wedding band, and a watch my brother gave me when I graduated college. I then like to add a statement piece to tie my look together: a long necklace (my favorite is the Silpada Party Time necklace), or a fun bracelet.
ReplyDeleteYou inspire me in so many ways. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteMy jewelry selection is rather limited. Gold necklaces and simple rings. I can definitely see how a statement piece like the necklace you are featuring would really liven up my wardrobe though. Perhaps it's time I try branching out into more adventurous items myself. Thanks for the inspiration Jennifer!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed both videos on the ten item wardrobe for spring. It always inspires me to hone down my clothes and to aim for quality. The floaty tees were on sale at Bp! Go up a size gals because the arms are skinny!

It completes our looks
ReplyDeleteI usually only use earring and bracelets, as I find that my young children tug too much on necklaces. I tend to favor simple pieces that add a little pop.
ReplyDeleteI jewelry to make my outfit POP!
ReplyDeleteI use makeup and earrings :)
ReplyDeleteI use jewellery to add some personality to my looks, and to kind of reflect my mood, if I'm feeling bold or I'm wearing a very plain top I'll go for a statement necklace with studs or spikes, and if I'm wearing something with a bold print I'll try to tone it down a bit with a plain necklace. Thanks for the giveaway! :)
ReplyDeleteI use necklaces to show my favorite colors and style. It's like artwork, and so beautiful to look at. I love pairing colors like peach shirt with a sea foam green necklace. That's my fav so far.
ReplyDeletewith a black dress
ReplyDeleteHow do I use jewelry to express my style? I usually keep my jewelry pretty simple and classic. Would love to have a statement piece like the Stella & Dot necklace in the giveaway!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy wardrobe tends to be simple and classic, so I use jewelry to punch up my look, add visual interest, texture, and sparkle. This piece would be a fun addition to my spring wardrobe (based on navy neutrals) - hope I win!

ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer. This is my first time to your site, but I will be returning. I love your style. I especially love the return of bucket bags and striped shirts being popular again. Totally cool, great review. I use jewelry to enhance plain tops and dresses, and I usually go with a contrast. Like, a mint shirt with a bright red statement necklace.
