What's in my Handbag?

This week’s video, by request, shows you what is in my handbag. You won’t find anything revolutionary in there, just the daily essentials to go through the day prepared. I love knowing what other people carry in their bags so let me know what you have in your handbag in the comment section below!

The bag I am carrying is a simple leather tote by London Sole (French Sole if you are in the UK).

Here’s what’s in my bag:

Wallet: Louis Vuitton Zippy wallet
Sunglasses: Oliver Peoples
Keychain: Sherlock Holmes :)
Hand sanitizer
Lip gloss: Urban Decay “naked” and Clinique Black Honey
Sunblock stick
iPhone with Bonjour! case from Anthropologie
Face powder (ideally with compact mirror)
Besame vanilla brightening face powder
Ear phones
Pen
eReader
hair clip

Check out this week's video to see a talk-through of my handbag essentials. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or visit my channel (and don't forget to subscribe!), www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Madame Chic Inspiring Thought
If it's been a while, clean out your handbags this week. Throw out all of the crumbs and file away those receipts. Create a serene space in your purse to carry with you throughout the day.

Comment of the week
Virginia Ruth from Well of Encouragement blog writes on Refuse to be Dumbed Down:

One of my favorite quotes that I have tacked on my board by my desk:
"One ought,
Every day at least,
To hear a little song,
Read a good poem,
See a fine picture,
And, if it were possible,
To speak a few reasonable words." ~Goethe

Thank you Jennifer for your words of inspiration and encouragement. I do feel that as a society will settle with the lowest denominator if not challenged. Our brains were made for so much more- to explore, to create, to learn more about the world and the people around us.

Thank you Virginia Ruth... I love that quote!

Artistic Recommendation

Daily Connoisseur reader, Amy, has a film recommendation for us. She writes:

I just watched "Ida" - the wonderful Polish movie that won an Academy Award last week - I think it is brilliant. It's streaming on Netflix.

Thank you Amy! I look forward to checking it out! If you have a recommendation to share with us, always let me know!

See you next time on The Daily Connoisseur... let me know what's in your handbag!

  1. Oh, I love posts about handbags! Thanks for the video!

Seeing your claw clip reminded me that I wanted to tell you about some hair forks that I discovered a few months ago. I found them on amazon and think that they are so chic and make me feel a bit more elegant when I need to put my hair up.

I love them so much that I have gotten my sister hooked on them.

  2. The only other things that I would have in my handbag besides the ones you mentioned are, a mini notepad, for reminders, if I forget something on my grocery list and need to add to it, etc. and a water bottle. I always feel better and seem to drink more water through out the day if I always have some with me.

Thanks for your post. Have a good week.

  3. Thanks for the tip about the sunscreen stick. I hadn't seen that before. Am I the only one who carries a mini pharmacy around?

  4. I love your tote- so simple and chic! I think it would look very pretty against whites and khakis in the summer. I have my phone, wristlet (instead of a wallet), keys, travel pack of tissues, hand sanitizer, mini hair brush, and a small cosmetic case with: mini Altoids, small emery board, lipstick, two Burt's Bees lip shimmers - shade Fig is similar to Black Honey, band aids (am a klutz), and a round miniature mirror. I guess I carry more than I thought...I really like the tip of the sunscreen stick.

  5. The What's In My Handbag videos are a guilty pleasure of mine! I always find them so fascinating, and have always wanted you to make one! Your bag is exactly as I imagined it would be: minimal, clean, orderly and of course chic! I have been using just my wristlet when not toting around my son's diaper bag, but have been in the market for a new handbag. This video inspires me to find the right one and keep it neat and tidy! Thanks Jennifer for sharing!

  6. In addition to wallet, lipstick, etc. I always have a magazine and my paper journal in my bag with me.

  7. Hand sanitizer and a beautiful handkerchief are a must, and I always have to have three lollipops in my purse, just in case I should see my grandchildren!

  8. What a great idea the tiny sunblock is! Thanks.

    Oh and Jennifer ...

Would you sign my copy of your book? :)

    (There, you have been asked.)

  9. Hi Jennifer and Friends,
The most exciting thing I had in my handbag today was my personal catalog of my first ever capsule wArdrobe. It has been amazing to me how much thought has had to go into this process and how many times I have needed to edit this document. I keep thinking I have a plan and then realize I need to make changes. My biggest challenge was in how to narrow down my extras (outer layers, shoes, special occasion dresses, bags). I still had far too many of these. So I went looking for some extra help, and I found it in the form of a stylist and author in Australia called Wendy Mak. I am sharing this in case there may be others out there looking for additional guidance at this time, with spring just around the corner. Wendy recommends 30 specific items. Jennifer, I believe you would call 16 of these "core item"s and 14 of them "extras", including outer layers, shoes and bags. Although I ended up making a lot of substitutions because of my personal preferences, Wendys suggestions were a good place to start, and I did find her numbers to be very helpful. She recommends 7 bottoms, 6 tops, 5 outer layers, 6 shoes, 3 dresses and 3 bags. If you feel that a template of specifics, including extras, could be useful to you, then you might want to check out her web page which has a short video or her ebook. This is augmentation for those of us who may need extra hand holding when it comes to creating our first capsule wardrobe. FYI Wendy describes her suggestions as being for an entire year. That doesnt work for me; so I created two wardrobes (like Jennifer), one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter using Wendy's general template. Thank you, Jennifer, for being the first to introduce me to the much needed concept of a capsule wardrobe. I'm excited about my first one and I'm looking forward to seeing yours! Warm best, Alexandra

  10. As a minimalist, I have just three handbags: for dress, a small Chanel chain-handled bag that I received long ago for my 30th birthday, an Aigner backpack for hiking or anytime I need my hands free, and my everyday bag -- which I love! -- a soft black leather one that looks like a motorcycle jacket's love child, by Perry Ellis. I love all the zippered pockets over the outside of the bag! In one, I put my cell phone. In another, a pack of tissues, readers, and a mini flashlight. In another, I tuck my keys (My keychain is a snap-apart one from Coach. My house keys are on one side, and my car key on the other. That way, if I need work done on my car and need to leave the key, I just snap it off.) The inside has a zippered pocket that I use as a makeup bag. I carry a compact and powder brush, comb, eye lubricating drops, some safety pins for wardrobe malfunctions, a Tide stain removing pen, plus I throw in whatever lipstick I'm wearing that day. I also carry a pad and pen. Lastly is my wallet -- a black Chanel clutch type that I scored at a consignment shop. In it is some money, change, drivers license and insurance card, a credit card, and various rewards cards.

I don't really have to do any purse cleaning because I take out the things I need to take out as soon as I get home -- my phone, lipstick, any receipts that I picked up along the way.

If I'm going to an appointment where I may have to wait, I also bring a book, and sometimes a water bottle.

  11. Where does one purchase a "simple leather tote by London Sole"? I did a search and can't seem to find anything. Thanks!

  13. When my husband and I first met, he was very impressed with how tidy my handbag was. Now I know that what he was really impressed with was how much space I had available to carry his stuff around!

  14. I love that scene from Amelie! It's strangley comforting to me : )

My handbag is tidy but I do carry more stuff in it than you do Jennifer (tissues, a cloth to clean my eyeglasses, gum, a notebook, a planner, a small container with a couple of advil in it, dental floss). It's all pretty well organized though; once I started investing in quality handbags, I also started using small pouches for anything that could potentially make a mess (so I have a make-up pouch, a small leather pencil case to store pens, etc.). Everything is easy to find!

  15. Hi Jennifer,
Have you seen this YouTube talk about The Evolution of the Bikini? It explores psychology and modesty. I think you would be interested.

  16. Your Sherlock Holmes keychain is so classy!

Coincidentally I just posted my Minimalist Challenge of the Month, which is all about decluttering your handbag: http://www.heroinetraining.com/minimalist-challenge-lighten-your-load/

On an unrelated note, thank you again for inspiring me to attend more cultural events (via your book!)! Last night I attended Mozart's Requiem for just £5 as a "young person" and it was marvelous :)

  17. Oh gosh, I have s many things in my pocketbook, lol. I have both my things, and my sons in a Vera Bradley backpack (it's a smallish one they no longer make).

For my son I have 4 diapers in a plastic bag, wipes in a PPB case, two matchbox cars, a bib, and a packet of Wet Ones.

For me I have my Kate Spade zip around wallet, Vera Bradley large eyeglass case, a packet of tissues, Chanel lipstick and Fresh Sugar Lipbalm, a zannclip, my iPhone 6 Plus, coupons, L'Occitane hand cream, hair ties, and a nail clipper.

I really can't wait until I don't have to lug the diapers and wipes anymore!

  18. What is a pocketbook? Is this what we'd call a purse (the thing you put money in) or a bag (the thing into which you stuff everything?)
I'm surprised you have beauty products. I seldom carry these with me - once made-up for the day I seldom 'touch up' my makeup, perhaps a bit of extra lippy after a meal, that would suffice.
But do you not carry a notebook and pen/pencil/ballpoint? And your shopping list? Or a cotton hankie for when you go to a washroom and the hot air dryer isn't working? These are essentials for me, as well as hand wipes/sanitizer, wallet/purse, reading glasses, sun glasses, mobile phone, and keys.
