Homemade Lavender Vinegar Multipurpose Cleaner

Today I'm making the homemade lavender vinegar multipurpose cleaner I write about in At Home with Madame Chic . This has been a highly requested post, and I'm happy to share it with you in today's video!

Lavender Vinegar Multipurpose Cleaner
1 cup water
1 cup distilled white vinegar
40 drops Lavender oil

Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle, and store in a cool, dark place.

In this video, I use the glass spray bottle and Majestic Pure Lavender Essential Oil, both of which can be found on Amazon. You could also find very affordable plastic spray bottles at many dollar stores.

If you've never cleaned with vinegar before, it might take a while to get used to the scent. The lavender oil cuts through the pungent vinegar. I actually love the way this smells. To me, it's the scent of "clean". Lavender also has many disinfecting properties, and has long been used as an element in household cleaners.

I hope you enjoy my video today. Please let me know if you make your own cleaning solutions at home. What are your favorites?

Hi Lara, so many people compare their lives to what they see from others on Facebook. This is such an unfair comparison. I generally find that people only post the positive aspects of their lives and rarely share the darker times. It is the same as comparing yourself to what you see in a fictional show on television. My advice to your friend would be to focus on the blessings in her own life and not compare herself to others. Maybe a hiatus from Facebook is also in order!

Thank you for joining me today. I will see you on Thursday for an episode of Teatime with Jennifer, where we discuss the Oscars! Until then ...

  1. Hello, Jennifer. I've been using this cleaner recipe now for several months. I recall reading about it in your book, and have seen similar recipes around the internet. I love it! I'm obsessed with lavender, so I use it in many ways around the home. Over the weekend, I made another batch of the multipurpose cleaner; this time, I used half lavender and half orange oil. Heavenly!

  3. Jennifer, I look forward to trying your all-purpose cleaning spray. I need to share my favorite homemade all-natural cleaner with you and your readers. Our kitchen appliances are stainless steel, and they end up covered with fingerprints and water drips. I have tried so many different commercial cleaning products, which are expensive and often smell strongly of chemicals.

I recently learned of an all-natural, inexpensive, and efficient way to clean stainless steel using vinegar and oil! The vinegar cleans, and the oil shines. Put a few drops of distilled vinegar onto a soft cloth, and clean the surface of the appliance in the direction of the grain. This will remove all the grime, but will leave it looking streaky. Put a little bit of oil onto the surface of a different clean cloth, and buff in the direction of the grain. I was completely amazed at how quickly the surface gleams and shines. I'm still amazed every time I clean the front of my dishwasher and refrigerator. It works so much better than the store-bought cleaners, and is nearly free. Please try this if you have stainless appliances. It does not leave the surface oily if you use the smallest amount of oil and buff it completely.

(I used canola oil, but you can probably use any kind of oil.)

  4. To Margery, above: I've been using a few drops of lemon oil on a microfiber cloth and buffing my stainless steel appliances - they looks great!

Jennifer, your recipe sounds great, but my "signature house scent" is Mrs Meyers lemon verbena - I use that scent in all of her products! I know it would be cheaper to make my own, but I adore that scent...

  5. I have tried so many time to use vinegar to clean but can never get used to the scent. However, I've heard Dr. Bronners is also good. Did it take you long to get used to the smell, Jennifer? And to Amy above...I have a Mrs. Meyers scent too. When we move back to NC soon, our daughter has requested we use it again to remind her of when we lived there prior. Thanks, Jennifer, for a good reminder of how easy it is to clean naturally. Amy

  6. Hi ladies, thank you for commenting!

Stephanie, that combination sounds so lovely!

Margery, thank you for your recipe. You are comment of the week!

Amy, I don't blame you. I love lemon verbena! We have two lemon verbena plants in our garden. Best scent ever.

Amy, Happy baby village. In your opinion what are the best places in NC? My husband and I are thinking of visiting that state. He is kind of obsessed with it because it has such great golf.

    1. One of the best places to visit in NC is the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. I live in Charlotte, and we have excellent food, shopping, and of course the NASCAR Hall of Fame, but I think the Biltmore Estate tops the must see in NC list!
Also, if you are a Jan Karon Mitford Series fan, you have to go to Blowing Rock which is where she lived when she wrote the Mitford series - the town was her inspiration for Mitford.

  7. I decided to try this even though I don't like the smell of vinegar - I have to say I love it!! The lavender really does cut the vinegar smell. Thank you

  8. ooops, I posted in the wrong place originally.

I use baby oil on my stainless steel appliances. it works great.

I tried the exact vinegar and water and lavender essential oil. I cleaned my bathroom with it but I'm sad to say that with a lot of elbow grease, my bathtub still had soap scum. I pulled out my Scrubbing Bubbles and it wiped away easily. I wish it had worked.
