Modest Swimwear | What I Wear

Many people have requested a swimwear video. What do I wear to the pool or the beach? Today, I'm showing you what I like to wear. You might be surprised!

I prefer to wear bathing suits that provide more coverage. Many times we think the only option is the two-piece bikini, or the one-piece suit. I am not saying there is anything wrong with those choices, but at this time in my life they are not working for me. I like to cover up more when swimming for many reasons. One of the great benefits of this is you protect your skin from the sun.

I haven't always worn modest swimwear. I had a bit of a light-bulb moment at the Legoland water park (lightbulb moments can truly happen anywhere!) that helped me make my decision and, you know what? I have never looked back.

All of my swimsuits here are over two years old, so I do not have direct links. But all of these swimsuits were purchased from Land's End. They have a great selection of rash guards, swim skirts and shorts.

I hope you enjoy today's video! Also featured:

I'm so happy I found your channel! Your perspective is so refreshing. A few things I really like about your channel: the background music (especially), the videos are not too long, you talk clearly and at a nice pace, your style. Thank you for sharing your ideas and opinions- they have me thinking about my life and how I present myself much differently. I want to start wearing dresses! 😊. I forgot to add that I also love that you promote the fine arts.

Hi Keriannak, thank you for your compliments. Many people do not know how much time goes into blogging and making videos. It takes much effort and time and it's nice to feel appreciated! Thank you to you and to everyone who supports The Daily Connoisseur.

Today, I would love to know... what do you wear for swimwear? What are your thoughts on modern swimwear? Let me know, and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

  1. Love your swim suits! They are darling. Some people have an "if you've got it, flaunt it" mentality, and they think modest swim suits are for those with figure flaws, but your precious video proves otherwise. So glad to see this - I never felt comfortable in a bikini, even in my teens and at my most fit. By the way, I am also seeing longer skirt lengths lately, most publicly on The Duchess of Cambridge and Our First Lady. Very refreshing.

  2. I like even a bit more coverage - I make my own with this pattern: www.cuteandcovered.com/

  3. I used to be the same, only wear bikini and I even remember wearing a string bikini once! When I look back I just laugh a little. I couldn't imagine doing that now!

I agree with Margaret Anne, it's so refreshing to see women (who undoubtedly have great bodies) wear clothing that isn't always about showing everything off...

But I honestly think that one pieces are not only more flattering, but I think they can be much sexier too! What ever happened to using your imagination? The women wearing them usually feel more comfortable and that is very obvious with their confident demeanor. A confident demeanor is more attractive on a woman then any little bikini.

Not only do they look great, but they feel it and I believe that is more important than anything. If you feel comfortable wearing a bikini - go for it. If you feel better wearing something modest...then do so. Because when you wear something you're not at all happy in, it shows.

    Loved this video Jennifer.

  4. Thank you so much! I just returned from vacation in Hawaii and was saying that I am done - I need to find a rash guard, and more coverage - no matter how much sun screen or how often i apply it - I always seem to get burnt - and it makes it hard to enjoy yourself when you are in pain :(

  5. Lands End has such a great selection and a variety of size ranges for those of us who are a difficult fit. But I have a hard time finding a sun hat that fits - my head size is a little larger than standard. Where are some good places to look?

  7. Hello Jennifer,

Love your swim outfits! I de-cluttered all my bikinis earlier this year. For the first time in my life, I only have one swimsuit! It's a retro halter-style polka-dot one-piece with a bit of skirting. I do swim, as I live in Northern California, but I think this will work. So far so good!
Last summer, we visited Southern California, and I was surprised to see a young woman wearing a thong bikini when she was with her parents! I could see wearing something like that with friends, if that's what everyone was wearing, but not with my parents! To each her own, I suppose!

    Warm best,
    Alexandra

  8. I love your swimsuits! I am also a Lands End devotee. The navy rash tunic you show is one of my FAVORITE things--but I own it in black. I also wear it with a large straw hat and I think I look pretty chic. ;)

My go-to suit is Lands End Grecian swimsuit. It's a one-piece and very flattering, but provides great coverage for me. I also think it has a classic look that just suits me well. I have it in several colors! But I like your idea of wearing the long-sleeved rash guard with a swim skirt or shorts, too, and I might try that out next year!

  9. This was a timely vlog post as I was just at a pool party in L. A. and was the only one who chose not to go into the water. I'm like a "cat" and I really don't like going into pools. I've also had melanoma in situ and want to protect my skin at all times from the sun. So...what to wear to look fashionable poolside?! I chose monochromatic black leggings and a cap-sleeved Lush top with a sleeveless lightweight cream tunic and sandals. I had a straw boater, and, fortunately, there was ample shade so I didn't have to wear it, as we were going to a musical later that evening and I changed outfits. I love your selection of modest swimwear. Excellent post!

  10. I love your choices, Jennifer! I totally agree-- to each her own in the swimsuit department! It's about what makes you feel confident and comfortable, whether that's a bikini or something with more coverage. I feel there is so much pressure on women to "look great in a bikini". I've never been comfortable in a bikini, and since having my son two years ago, I've basically avoided swimming, which is such a shame as my little guy loves the water! You've inspired me to look into other options, especially the rash guard and shorts combo. As a fair-skinned, sun-sensitive person I think that would really work for me! Thank you!

  11. I love Lands End and especially their swimwear. So many options and fits, different leg opening styles, support options, tops and bottoms sold separately, shorts, skirts, cover ups, and all fairly reasonable priced. I had surgery after my last LE swimsuit purchase and had a new scar I didn't want to show, and I was able to buy a new, boy leg bottom that coordinated with my existing tankini top. Awesome quality. The stretch never dies. My 15-year-old LE tank suit stretches and snaps back like new. Will never buy swimwear anywhere else.

  12. Another Lands' End bathing suit customer here! I have one of their black tugless tanks but now I wish I had gotten a tankini top and swim skirt! We're nowhere near California (we're in Michigan, on the very cold Lake Superior) but I do wear a swimsuit in our backyard hot tub!

    Great video, Jennifer!

  13. I wear a bikini! Nothing stringy or complicated, just a standard bikini. I love to feel the air on my skin. If I need to guard from the sun I cover up in a white towel or sit under an umbrella. At the pool, if I get up to walk around, i wrap a sarong around my waist. At the beach this wouldn't happen unless I was going to the restroom or to a concession stand. I do have a few one piece swimsuits, but they rarely get worn. I just look better in a bikini (slim and not busty at all!) and I'm very comfortable wearing one.

  14. I remember being a girl who went to the pool every single day and whenever I dove off the diving board, my bikini bottoms went down when I hit the water. I'm sure I was not the only one who had this happen! Yikes!

Now at 55 years old, I wear a tankini style. High halter front top and either a skirt bottom or conservative swim bottom. I like being more covered. Who has time for worrying about falling out of your swim suite when you're actually swimming or playing with the grandkids? Not me! I like the rash guards, but I don't have one.

  15. I love your swimsuits! I didn't know such cute modest options exsisted. I always wear a one piece but even then don't feel completely comfortable. Next summer when I'm not pregnant I'll have to remember those. Thanks!

  16. Ever since I discovered swim shorts that's the route I take along with a tankini. I figure, the more comfortable you are the more you will enjoy yourself.

  17. I wear a burkini from Ahiida. I'm not Muslim, I just like not having to worry about slippage, sunburn or wardrobe malfunctions. I can go from swimming, to a game of frisbee, to buying an icecream without a need to change or add extra layers. Bonus: it only takes me about 20 seconds to get sunscreened up!

  18. I had no idea there were such lovely rash guards for women! I will definitely have to look into one for myself as I often want to have a bit more coverage on top by the end of a long day on the beach. I love your navy blue top with the white detailing. It's beautiful! Thanks for opening my eyes to the wonders of swim suits...I'm thankful I didn't need to have a LegoLand experience to learn it! ;)

  19. I enjoyed this video. I found these same suits (like literally, some of the same!) the last few years too. I have four little kids, and I put them in similar gear. It cuts down on sunscreen time (and sunburns that happen when wiggly kids make it hard to reapply well). It's so much easier to move and have fun with them. I was a lifeguard for many years when I was younger, but despite living in a swimsuit, was never totally comfortable. These things are so much better! I love how Lands End continues the colors year to year, so you can replace just part of an outfit if needed, or if they just have a pretty new print out.

  20. As a new mom I have switched from a bikini to a one piece. Not because I feel as though now that I'm a mom I have to dress like one, my one piece is still rather "sexy", but because it's much better to have things covered as you're diving across the beach to prevent sand from being eaten or trying to handle a flailing baby in the water. You look amazing in your choices, it's always inspiring to see what you love!

  21. Hi ladies, thank you for chiming in! Fourkid, I have seen cute and covered and I love those bathing suits. Maybe I will try to dust off the sewing machine and make my own! :)

Thank you so much to all of you for your comments and sharing your preferences for swimwear. I'll see you on Thursday for a day in the life!

  22. For me it's a matter of aesthetics. Showing too much flesh is just not beautiful for my aesthetic feeling. It kind of hurts my senses. Although I am slim I don't like to expose my body and my flaws. The best way I found is to wear a sarong. There are so many beautiful patterns and the light fabric feels fresh and values any type of body. On top I wear short, sleeveless, body-fit tops or bikini tops. But as I don't like crowded water-parks or beaches anyway, I generally avoid the typical bathing staff and prefer just having a leisurely walk or sit watching the sunset at the beach with whatever dressing style I like. I am happy to be free of the swimsuit stress, and to stay away from things I don't like to do. I think there are more people who feel like this, but they are afraid to stand out, be considered old-fashioned, frigid or whatever. Therefore thanks a lot for this video that shows there are alternative ways to do things and we don#t need to be ashamed of doing things differently. The most important is to feel good about it!

  23. I chose to be modest with all my clothing, and I've found Land's End to be a good source of pretty swimwear. I like a skirted bottom and the tank, this year I added a rash guard. My skin is fair and I burn easily-so I love the sun protection.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Love these looks. Does the rash guard have any built-in support, or would it work better to wear a bikini top underneath?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Loved this video as I do all the videos and your attitude about personal preferences. I have olive skin and never a significant burn yet developed a skin cancer that left a noticeable scar. Boy, skin protection is a must for me or indoor pools. I wear board shorts and tops that I often find in athletic wear departments.
As for body-baring, I've been there. However talking to my husband and other guys, I learned what they really thought about how women dress and believe me it had nothing to do with how cute the swimsuit was or how comfortable I was. It's a thought.

  26. I always enjoy your videos and just subscribed to your channel. I've been on the modest swimsuit bandwagon for several years. Since I don't go in the water beyond my knees at the beach, I've found sleeveless workout shirts and a black Lands Ends swim mini skirt to work really well. I don't have to worry about sunscreen on my back (which I often forgot and would get sunburned). The material on the workout shirts is like a swimsuit and comes in fun bright colors. Also, you don't even need a coverup since you already have modest coverage!

  27. I loved this post and your swimsuits! This is the first year ever that I have felt completely comfortable at beach/pool. I bought two swim pairs and and two rash guards and I'm never going back!! I found mine at Athleta.

  28. Have you seen Coolibar? For those of us ladies over 55 who not only need protection from the sun (I have had melanoma), their swim garments also allow for more coverage of that loose, crepe-y skin that eventually hits us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Love those rash guards from Land's End. I own a bunch. I too wear them over swim shorts for a walk on the beach and then a jump in the ocean

  30. Quick question: I desperately want a cut hat with sun protection and I love your navy one, yet the Amazon link hat looks a bit different. Is this the same hat or a similar one. If not, what brand is yours, Jennifer? Apologies for the rush question, but I'm traveling next week and would love to take one with me. Thank you!

  31. I love the idea of rash guards. I'm very fair. I'm so glad you are encouraging modest swim wear. Can you talk about support underneath the rash guards? Do they have bras? If not, do you wear a sports bra. Thx!

  32. I had no idea such swim suits were available - wonderful! Like you I have always felt uncomfortable in a swimsuit even though I am slim. I hate the idea that women feel they have to look great in a bikini - for whom? Surely that's not where our value as women lies? How about we work to be appreciated for the development of our minds and spirits, not our bikini bodies?

  33. I would love to have rash guard for outdoot swimming. Patagonia has some wonderful rashguards and board shorts that I've been looking at. They are a little more expensive but beautiful, and Patagonia is a great company.

  34. Jennifer,
Can you make a video about where you shop for high quality children's clothes? I have three children also and I am quite particular about fabrics and prints but I have not been very impressed with many American brands for kids. Thank you!

  35. I like your swimsuit because I don't like bikinis. I never wear it. The swimsuit you share makes me feel more comfortable.
