Homeschool Room Tour | Jennifer L. Scott

Thank you for your great response to Monday's post discussing our homeschooling journey. In today's video I show you our homeschool room. It is pieced together with older furniture, plus storage and desk solutions from Ikea. We love our room and enjoy learning in it each weekday. I often find the kids hanging out in this room on the weekends as well, dong crafts and reading. This video isn't just for homeschoolers, but for anyone looking for storage inspiration and work space/ craft room ideas for your own children. I hope you enjoy the tour in today's video.

My new eCourse, Chic Financial Principles for Debt-Free Living, is a class that will inspire you to change your shopping habits, your spending habits and to live richly beneath your means. Here is what Gillian had to say about the course, "I've just finished your course and I'd just like to thank you for your wise advice and let you know how much I appreciate and value your hard work which is delivered in such a beautiful way. I've enjoyed reading all of your books and refer to them again and again. I love the whole concept of the 10 item wardrobe, enjoying my home life and living frugally but well. To me this is the essence of a life well lived when every aspect is in balance and relished as a "daily connoisseur". Thank you thank you thank you. With love and blessings."

Thank you so much, Gillian. I am so happy you enjoyed the course!

Sarah E. writes, "Hats off to you, Jennifer. My mother was a saint and took on the very labor-intensive task of homeschooling me and my four sisters from kindergarten through 12th grade through Abeka Academy. I am deeply indebted to my parents for doing so. Though there were several naysayers who worried about our lack of socialization, I found it liberating learning without the daily distractions my friends were experiencing. This and my parents were staunch believers in community involvement, so my sisters and I experienced no shortage of play, peers, or necessary social friction. In the end, I loved learning at my pace and was able to graduate early before pursuing my bachelors and masters degree at my university. While I agree it is not for everyone, you are clearly on the right path. Best of luck to you!"

Thank you, Sarah! My favorite part about reading everyone's comments on Monday's video was hearing all of the success stories. Thank you for sharing your homeschooling experience with us!

I would love to know what tips and ideas you have for organizing your children's work space, whether you homeschool or not. Playroom organization ideas are welcome too! Let us know in the comment section below and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

  1. Loved it! I made me a little nostalgic for our homeschool days gone by. We're in our 13th year of homeschooling and so my kids are older now. We have those same Ikea desks and we have had 2 back to back also. We have the older Ikea Billie storage units in our room and they've been great for all these years. Also...we love love the Lamplighter books and their audio books have been great for road trips. So glad that you are having fun on this new journey!!

  2. Loved it! You’re so lucky to have such a fantastic space to teach the lessons in. And have the pool waiting for when you’ve finished... 😊

I’d love to see more rooms in your house if you’re happy to share them please.

  3. Beautiful, sunny room! My daughters were homeschooled and we had a very positive experience. We didn't have a dedicated homeschool space; we used the dining room table and sofa in the living room. It was comfortable and cozy. We had a bookcase for storing current schoolbooks and the rest of our many books had homes in various rooms of the house. It worked very well for us. I wish you and your family well as you homeschool, and I'm glad you've caught the "bug"! :)

  4. What a great homeschool room with a great view! (I love the baby's artistic additions to the room...;)) I have never posted pictures of our homeschool room on my blog, but we're very fortunate to have a dedicated space also. When we finished our basement 5 years ago we had two walls of built-in bookcases and cabinets built and installed. We have a 6' whiteboard on one wall (my brother-in-law owned a whiteboard company...), pull-down maps my husband bought on Ebay, a big corkboard, and the windows look out on the backyard and the cow pasture beyond. Ironically in the winter I somehow gravitate upstairs and do schoolwork at the dining room table--I think it's because I can start soups and cook etc while supervising school if I do that. My husband wants to install a gas fireplace in our schoolroom area to coax us back down there in the winter, and it would be cozy!

Having a bright, happy, organized little spot for school is such a gift. And your pool looks like fun, too!

  5. Jennifer,
I read your blog posts through BlogLovin and for some reason 5 out of your last 7 blog posts have shown your Financial Course picture as the thumbnail. I just wanted to make you aware in case this is something you can change on your end.

  6. Hi ladies, thank you for your comments! I'm glad you enjoyed the homeschool room tour. It's one of my favorite rooms in the house.

April, thank you for letting me know about the Bloglovin malfunction. I'll look into it but I'm not sure if anything can be done on my end. Perhaps it chooses to select that picture first? Hmmm. Thank you for letting me know.

See you all on Monday for an exciting announcement!

    Love, Jennifer

  7. We live in a 2 bedroom, 1200 square foot home. I homeschool my 8 year old, and I babysit our 4 month old and 18 month old cousins 4 days a week. We are fortunate to have a sunroom directly off our dining area, and the sunroom is used as a combination playroom/guestroom (there is a daybed, as well as crib and changing pad on top of a dresser - the dresser holds all our toys). So the toddler can play in the playroom, I can wear the baby or let him sleep in the crib, and we do school at our dining table. I used contact paper to put a large chalkboard on the wall behind our dining table - as a bonus, the clean chalkboard adds a nice touch of black to our neutral, somewhat farmhouse style interior. We have a beautiful pie safe built by my husband's great grandfather, which I use to store our currently used homeschool items. It's important to me to have a streamlined, uncluttered, beautiful home, so that our antiques and family heirlooms are able to shine, despite having a small home, homeschooling, and little boys running around all day. Thank you for sharing your room! As my son ages, and the little ones aren't at our home anymore, I might transform the sunroom into more of a dedicated homeschooling space where he can work away from the main activity of the home.
