Thank you to everyone who watched Monday's home tour video. It was really fun to share our downstairs with you. Today, I'm discussing how we like to mix both real and faux indoor plants.
We do this for a variety of reasons. We have a six bedroom home, and because I like a bit of greenery and/or flowers in each room, I mix real and faux plants to keep maintenance down. Also, some rooms have less light than others and live plants don't work well there. With the plethora of realistic-looking faux plants on the market today, it's easy to create a totally natural look. I have purchased many of my faux plants from Hobby Lobby, Ikea, Amazon and Michaels.
I do not show every plant we have in this video, but I do show you a large selection. Be sure to watch the video to hear me discuss each plant in detail, including which ones are faux and which ones are real.
If you'd like to see a part two to this video, showing our faux plants upstairs, please let me know.
I hope you enjoy today's video.

Comment of the Week
Today's comment is a testimonial from Dawn, who wrote to me about her experience with a budget ten-item wardrobe: "Dear Jennifer, Your books have enhanced my life immeasurably! Thank you so much for everything, but specifically your video on the budget ten item wardrobe and your reply to critics. While I read that one should buy "the best quality you can afford", I mentally applied this as "I should be able to afford expensive items or not purchase clothing". Hence, I only bought one $100 dress over the past several months. Your response to critics finally made the true meaning of your original quote click for me, and it was so freeing! We just completed an international adoption, so expensive updates are not an option. After watching your video I purged some summer items and purchased two updates from Zulily and Amazon; for about $30 total! Thank you for living authentically! Blessings, Dawn"
Hi Dawn, congratulations on the adoption! I'm so thrilled that the ten-item wardrobe concept has worked for you in all areas, including budget. There is no shame in not having a large budget for clothes. It even causes you to be more creative than you normally would be. Thank you for being a supporter of my work.
I would love to know... do you mix live and faux plants and flowers in your home? Why or why not? What are your tips and tricks? Leave us a comment and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog. See you soon!

Hello Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the video. Your plants look very pretty, and they're inspiring because I don't have any plants in my home at all. I don't have a green thumb, and if I accept a plant into my home, it's really not being kind to the plant! The only "plants" I have are two vases of paper flowers made by my daughter and maybe a poinsettia at Christmas! However, seeing all your plants, I will perhaps try one more time!
Warm best,
Alexandra
Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteI like a mix of faux and real as well but have more faux. Yours look great.
Another consideration are pets. With real plants, you must always ensure that they are not harmful if a pet should happen to chew on them. Someone gave friends of mine a plant that their young cat chewed on overnight as my friends were asleep and had to be taken to a vet the next morning. Sadly, their cat died from it. Cats can jump up to places we don’t expect them to reach, so keep that in mind as well.
I’ve bought faux orchids from Marshall’s that are very real looking and work well in my bathrooms that don’t get a lot of light.
I have quite a few real plants, but no faux plants. You've inspired me to add some faux plants to areas in our house that don't see much sunlight. Thanks for a great video and the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI simply love these visits into your home, Jennifer, and I find your designs and decorating style so soothing and comforting for home. I'm still enjoying the outdoor wreath on our wooden gate that you inspired with a previous "how-to" video and, yes, we do have both real and faux plants, and flowers, in our home. This week, I replaced a faux green plant in a small black square vase with a real Mother Fern from Armstrong Nursery, because I wanted a real plant in my home office that would be safe and non-toxic to my two cats (I looked on the ASPCA website for that as recommended by my vet). I did this, because the plastic of the leaves seemed to be disintegrating and casting off an unpleasant waxy fragrance, so it was time to change it. I know your next video is about faux plant-arranging, however, I would LOVE to hear about your weekly plant maintenance and see if you have a schedule (like every Monday, for watering and dusting plants, etc.). Thanks for all your generous time making these videos.
ReplyDeleteHello Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteWell, I am starting with baby steps. I received a vase of cut tulips for the holiday this weekend. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and all the moms here a very HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY!
I would like to second Vicki's request for a video about plant maintenance. I could use a "house-plant care for dummies" video! Or perhaps "Plant care 101" would sound more polished~
Thanks in advance,
Alexandra
I have a few live plants and no artificial plants, but you inspire me to try. I like the flower bouquets that are faux. I have some air plants which require very little care and they are a fun type of plant to have. Have you ever tried them? Love your orchid too!

Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteHere you are again inspiring us to beautify our homes. I also have a mix of faux and living plants, although lately I would keep inside just the faux ones. My husband is highly allergic to polen and I don’t want to worsen his allergies. The real ones are ferns and I moved them by the front porch. There are some self watering liners for flower pots if you are interested. I use few of them so I don’t have to worry about watering.I just refill the reservoir once every 3 weeks or so. When we leave for vacation, we also don’t need to ask anyone to water our plants. I love your big plants and of course, the gorgeous orchid. Thank you again for your generosity, I do appreciate your time and commitment to us, your admirers.
Plants have been my decor mainstays for years. They not only look pretty, they add a live and healthy touch that can easily be moved about from room to room. I really enjoyed seeing what kind of plants you have, and am inspired to do a similar tour on my blog at some point. Thanks for this glimpse into your home. My daughter and I loved both this and the previous tour of your beautiful spaces.
ReplyDeleteI would very much like to see a part 2 of this video!
ReplyDeleteLove all your decor. It is so simple and elegant. I use real plants only in my house. This is mainly because with many faux plants they tend to fade and collect dust. Even though some of my real plants have to be dusted, I find it easier. But, I am now inspired to do a faux plant in my girls room because I seem to kill all plants put in there. Really enjoying this home tour series! It’s inspiring me to de clutter even more!
ReplyDeleteI know this is not the place to post this request, however since I asked about your plant watering routine, I’d like to add these two questions here, random as they are. Your teeth are so beautiful and always white. I know you and your husband drink tea and coffee, as I do, and I’m wondering what, if any, teeth whitening products you use and can recommend. I would love to know. I generally have very white teeth but apparently I’m enjoying my evening tea a bit too much. My second question is to ask you what type of tea kettle you use to heat up your water. I was wondering if there is one that is safe and doesn’t produce any leaching or grit from inside or the water. I use filtered water from our refrigerator in a Sur La Table tea kettle and I’m ready to buy a new one. I did notice a black pot or kettle at your hot beverage station and table, that you created so nicely, from your home tour video and perhaps that is what you use, yet I wasn’t certain if it was for coffee or tea. I’m looking for a new teapot and one that I can heat up. I know some people use stovetop versions and others use electric plug-in versions. I would love to know. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI mix real and faux flowers in arrangements. A bunch of real lilies (inexpensive at the supermarket) in a big vase with several faux long, drooping stems of tiny orchid blossoms gives me an easy, beautiful, impressive arrangement for the entry or dining table. I've seen guests check them out and determine "real" when they see the lilies are real! Economical, beautiful, and easier to arrange and take care of than a big bouquet of varied real cut flowers.
ReplyDeleteHello, as a former florist, I have to recommend "pixie sparkle leaf shine" it is a spray that keeps live foliage looking bright green and dust free☺ I have also found that it makes dusting easier and less frequent.
