The Chic Assignment | April 2021

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for April, 2021. We will dive into the realms of opera, French Impressionism, and much more.

Thank you to The Chic Society for bringing us The Chic Assignment. The Chic Society is the private membership group on YouTube. Membership is only $1.99 a month. I release a "vodcast" (a video podcast) every Friday and we go live (either on YouTube or Zoom) once a month. There are also two upper tiers who receive recognition in The Chic Assignment check-in.

Chic Assignment no. 1 Enjoy the music of Puccini

This month we are listening to O Mio Babbino Caro from Puccini's opera, Gianni Schicchi. I found this exquisite violin performance from Caroline Adomeit as well as this beautiful operatic performance by Montserrat Caballé.

Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the artwork of Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was a French Impressionist painter who lived from 1841 to 1895 in Paris. She is known for her elegant works full of feminine charm. Check out a gallery of some of her most famous works on Google Arts and Culture. We will learn about Berthe Morisot in the mid-month check-in.

This portrait of Berthe Morisot was painted by Édouard Manet in 1872 and resides at the Musée D'Orsay in Paris.
Chic Assignment no. 3 Discover a new vegetarian dish to make for dinner this month. Tomorrow, I have a long overdue What’s for Dinner featuring meatless meals. You won’t want to miss it and you won’t believe who I’m collaborating with.

Chic Assignment no. 4 Immerse yourself into spring cleaning. Likely you’ve already begun, but this month I will have some exciting ASMR spring cleaning motivation to keep you on track with your cleaning.

As always, we are going to continue reading and recommending good books. This month, I am reading Dress Codes: How the Laws of Fashion Made History by Richard Thompson Ford. I will be interviewing the author on the channel this month so stay tuned for that.

  1. Your Pucini assignment brought back some amazing memories. I wouldn't say I was an opera fan or even very knowledgeable but I did have a wonderful connection to opera some 35 years ago. Through a work friend I got the occasional opportunity to serve as a dresser for Milwaukee's Florentine Opera Company. Each time was an intense week of working evening rehearsals and then three performances. I might be assigned to help the men or women's chorus. For a production of Madame Butterfly I was dresser for the star -- the quite famous Gilda Cruz Roma. I helped her with an on-stage costume change. We were behind a screen, on stage while she continued to sing within inches of my face while I helped her out of and into elaborate kimono costumes. In another production I was standing in the wings watching my assigned "charges" rehearsing. I turned to look at the person standing next to me in the dark to find myself whispering "hi" to Beverly Sills. She was our guest star but she didn't spend much time with us because her daughter was ill and she flew back to New York every day.

Besides this trip down memory lane, the assignment reminds me you don't have to be classical music fan or opera nerd, etc. to appreciate something. Over the years I've gotten the chance to attend a few operas and I just went for it. I rarely understand a word but I'm always brought to tears by the beauty.

  2. I used to sing "O Mio Babbino Caro" in my late teens when I was at singing classes. I obviously did not performed that well, but besides being a challenge, it was a way to relax myself and forget about other stressful stuff that I was dealing at that time. Singing songs written in italian also makes oneself feel a little bit more interesting. On the other hand, I love Berthe Morisot's works. I used to have a copy of "The Psyche Mirror" that I bought at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid... back in 1998. I had to throw it away years later as it was ruined after a heavy rain came inside my bedroom...I forgot to close the windows. I might buy it again now... I love that painting so much.
Thank you, you keep inspiring me to keep up nourishing my mind with art!
    Greetings from Mexico.
