Great Books I Read This Summer & Queen's Gambit Giveaway

I've read some great books over the last few months and wanted to share them with you in this week's video, which discusses everything from historical fiction to Victorian home life to unputdownable thrillers. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Books mentioned in the video:

Queen’s Gambit by Elizabeth Fremantle
The Butler Speaks by Charles MacPherson
Through the French Door by Carolyn Westbrook
Inside the Victorian Home by Judith Flanders
Daughter of Empire by Lady Pamela Hicks
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

Queen’s Gambit Giveaway

Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. Queen’s Gambit tells the story of Katherine Parr, the wife who survived the treacherous Tudor court of King Henry VIII. We all know the story of Henry VIII and his more famous wives, like Anne Boleyn, but few of us know details about Katherine Parr's life. This wonderful work of historical fiction takes us right there and fills in the blanks deliciously. If you love historical fiction, especially about the Tudor time period, you will love this book.

Simon & Schuster sent me an advance copy of Queen’s Gambit by Elizabeth Fremantle to read and were also kind enough to offer to give away one copy of this excellent book to a reader of the Daily Connoisseur!

Enter to win your own copy of Queen's Gambit, via rafflecopter. The giveaway is open to US residents only. I will announce the winner directly on this rafflecopter widget one week from today. Best of luck!

  1. Jennifer, I am about to start reading 'In Triumph's Wake', a biography of three royal mothers and their daughters: Isabella of Castille and Catherine of Aragon, Maria Teresa and Marie Antoinette, and Victoria and her eldest daughter Vicky. If you've not read it, it might be one to add to your library!

  2. Jennifer,
Thank you for all the book choices! Queen's Gambit sounds like the best one, and it's been getting some attention in magazines, also.

Summer in Ohio.....well the weather has been getting better so we are able to enjoy our screened in porch, finally. My favorite in the summer months at night...

    Warmly, Kathleen

  3. I always love a good book recommendation! Queen's Gambit sounds very interesting. I love historical fiction. And since I just checked Mr. Selfridge out from the library, maybe I should check out The Victorian Home as well!

The best part of my summer was definitely my wedding and honeymoon! My husband and I traveled to San Francisco from Kansas City to get married. After the wedding we spent a few days driving around wine country. It was absolutely beautiful, and I can't wait until we get to go back.

  4. The Queen's Gambit sounds fabulous! Definitely want to read that one. I love historical fiction but lately I've been on a non-fiction bout. I love reading about green living and interior design.

This summer has been very relaxed, can't complain. Spent most of it with family and friends and I took a summer class! Looking forward to the book club :-)

  8. My summer has been wonderful. I found your site around June 15 and then bought your book and I have slowly been implementing lifestyle changes. I have yet to get to a 10 item wardrobe- but I did a very large closet cleanout. I also use our nice dishes everyday- and I have to say, it is really wonderful how these little changes truly make for beautiful living.

  13. I read "Inside the Victorian Home" by Judith Flanders earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have added your other recommendations to my reading list. The best part of my summer was the arrival of my new baby boy!

  14. Try two on the comments (I think the first one was eaten away). The best part of my summer was spending time with family. It's clichéd, but my kids are growing and it was fun to spend time just "together" with family. We survived a 40 hr roadtip to Disneyland and back, visiting family and friends along the way. My parents visited from India and stayed a month (loved it!) and we were able to be a part of a reunion for family I haven't seen in 25 years.
I love your recommendations for the books. Have you ever read any of the Philipa Gregory books about Henry VIII? She does a few on the wives, a little trashy but fun reads.
Already have my eye on a new dress for fall thanks to you and frump gear has been donated!
    Can't wait to hear more.

  25. I missed you! I love to see your posts every week and it seemed like a long time since we heard from you. I can't wait to start reading Gone Girl, seems interesting. A quick question, do you ever feel over dressed when you take the public transport? It's something that has been bothering me lately, I'm scared of being robbed or something sometimes. Thank you, stay awesome :)

  27. The best part about my summer has been this: I got married in June and we had a wonderful honeymoon and it's just lovely to be married to my best friend.

I am so happy you are back on the blog. I missed you and your posts. Also, all of those books sound amaaazing, especially The Queen's Gambit. I'd love to read that one. I will get a copy of The Four Agreements from the library so I can join your book club. I'm also into the Victorian period (big time obsessed) and the book about life in Victorian times sounds like something I need to read. Have a great week!! :)

  30. Hallo Jennifer :)
I'm Karolina and I'm from Poland. I have just read your book. I love you style of living. And I would like to ask you for advice. I'm barely 18, and I am not entirely sure if I should be chic. Does it suit my age? I am still a student so I do not want to be shine.

    Thank you in advance
