Mother's Day Gift Guide 2019 | Jennifer L. Scott
Mother's Day is quickly approaching here in America and I have a quick and to-the-point gift guide for all of the dads and kids out there who are going to watch this video (ahem) :)
Today's gift guide features little luxuries that any mom would appreciate. Of course, if you are low on funds (kids, I'm talking to you), you know that moms love "tickets" for massages and other helps around the house.
If you do have a budget, keep these lovely gifts in mind for the special mother in your life.
South of France soaps are so beautiful, luxurious and lovely. They're kettle-cooked in small batches using a traditional Marseille triple-milled recipe to create a creamy lather that leaves skin soft and moisturized. Popular scents are almond gourmande, blooming jasmine, climbing wild rose, lavender fields, lemon verbena, lush gardenia or mediterranean fig. All South of France liquid and bar soaps are free of synthetic foaming agents like sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, as well as glutens, EDTA, parabens, and phthalates.
MYK Silk Pillowcases. A silk pillowcase would make a lovely, unexpected, and affordable gift. These natural mulberry silk pillowcases will give her a restful night's sleep, keep her hair-tangle free, and her skin refreshed. Use code SILKY15 for 15 % off.
Emile Cordon miracle lip balms are a beautiful luxury. They are high-quality, so moisturizing, and very pretty to look at and wear. They make a lovely gift.
Natural candles would also make a fabulous gift for any mother. Check out my natural candle gift guide for an in-depth review of the following candles:
Cellar Door Candles
Sudsy Soapery
Legend's Creek Farm
I did not mention Bend Soap Co. in my video, but they are well worth the mention. Bend Soap have beautifully packaged goat milk soaps and other organic and natural beauty products that make lovely gifts. I gifted my literary agents with Bend Soap for Christmas.
Ana Luisa Jewelry make high-quality, affordable jewelry pieces. I have a review of their spring collection coming soon (stay tuned!) Jennifer10 for $10 off your purchase
Casetify Designer iPhone Cases
Another unexpected present could be a beautiful designer phone case. My daughters picked out this one and I love it!I hope you enjoy today's video and that it has given you many gift ideas. Share this with anyone you know, who is looking for a good Mother's Day gift guide. I'll see you on Wednesday for the May Chic Assignment!
Love,
Jennifer

A Dress Code for Parents? | Teatime with Jennifer
On today's Teatime with Jennifer we are discussing the viral story regarding the Houston principal who has instituted a dress code for parents at James Madison High School. (Read the original article here).
Several readers sent me this article knowing that one of the popular topics discussed on The Daily Connoisseur is look presentable always, which does not mean to look perfect or expensive, but rather presentable. I believe that this is so important for us as parents. We need to model dignified behavior for our children and part of that is looking the part.
The principal in Houston is (of course) receiving tremendous push-back on her stance. While I don't agree with all of it, I do applaud her for bringing to light this unpopular issue that, I believe, should be addressed.
Join me for today's Teatime with Jennifer and chime in with your own thoughts on the matter! I would love to hear from you. What have you noticed with regard to parents and dressing? Has the principal gone too far or do you agree with her? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

One Week of Outfits from my Ten-Item Wardrobe | Jennifer L. Scott
Hello! I hope you're having a lovely week. After having our phones for several years, Ben and I finally upgraded them. (Seriously, the screens were cracked and they were starting to malfunction. Ben's was even washed in the laundry... but that's another story!) So the good news is that it will be easier to film these outfits of the week videos for you. The bad news is that the one you're watching today was filmed on my old phone. I figured you would rather see it with its imperfect quality rather than not see it, so I'm sharing the video with you today. (Also, my old phone case is terribly scratched and smudged... real life!). Thanks for understanding!
This week was a semi-typical week for us... peppered with lots of homeschooling, doctor's appointments, playdates, cleaning, and work. Ben was out of the country when I filmed this. It was an intense time, but we all managed to pull through.
I have linked everything I can below. If an outfit I'm wearing is no longer available, I have linked similar finds. I hope you enjoy seeing the ten-item wardrobe process in action in today's video!
Trench Coat (linking similar), A.P.C. dress (no longer available) I have linked A.P.C. here and a similar dress here , here, and here., white leggings, Blondo boots, Louis Vuitton bag,
Floral maxi dress (linking similar one here), Londontown Teatime on my nails (Use code JenniferS for 25% off)
Rebecca Taylor Dress, navy leggings, Lands' End slippers (ha!) demi-camisole
The friendship bracelet is Ana Luisa Jewelry (use code Jennifer10 for $10 off your order) and the watch is Tag Heuer.
LL Bean brushstroke dress, navy cardigan, Kork-Ease sandals
LL Bean olive dress, Sam Edelman Gigi sandal
Black tee shirt Lands' End skirt (linking similar one here)
Red floral blouse (linking similar ones here and here from Nordstrom) , Lands' End jeans (these stretch! Order your size or a size lower)
Also mentioned in today's video, Emile Cordon lip balms.

Comment of the Week
Deborah writes, "Jennifer, I love the balance you present in the 10-item wardrobe concept. I am slowly learning my personal style, importance of quality (or even what types of fabrics will wear well), insisting that things must fit properly and be comfortable (not just look good), using extras (like sweaters) especially in seasonal transitions, decluttering what doesn't work, simple wardrobe color palette, etc. There's a lot to learn, but it's becoming easier, and as I see my wardrobe thinning down and pleasing me more, my shopping becoming more deliberate, ridding myself of guilt from seeing all those unworn clothes, etc... it's very freeing.
Hugs!"

At-Home Manicure | Spring 2019 | 9-free Nail Polish
As part of my intentional rest and self-care routine, I have been luxuriating in my at-home manicures.
I take items that I already have on hand (castile soap, essential oils, and flowers) to create a beautiful, spa-like experience. Since it's hard for me to get out of the house right now, I'm finding this routine to be just as enjoyable as the spa (and a lot more affordable too!)
I'm using the beautiful LONDONTOWN polishes in today's video. LONDONTOWNis my favorite polish. Not only is it 9-free (free of the 9 major harsh chemicals found in traditional polish), but it has an amazing staying power. I can get my manicure to last for ten days and my pedicure to last for at least two weeks.
In today's video I use the gel genius base and top coat, the color Lemonade Pop, and the hand and nail serum.
LONDONTOWN always give my viewers a generous discount. Use code JenniferS for 25% off your order
The essential oil I'm using is from Cellar Door Candles, and the lavender castile soap is from Grove Collaborative.
Thank you for joining me for today's video. I would love to know how you do your at-home manicures. What self-care rituals are you enjoying currently? Let us know and your comment could be comment of the week on the blog! See you soon.
Love,
Jennifer

Ten-Item Wardrobe | How Many Extras Should I Have?
I hope you had a lovely Easter! We had a great weekend and it was so fun to celebrate with the baby for his first Easter. I made a carrot cake from scratch that didn't quite turn out as planned. It overflowed in the oven and by the time I cut it down to size it was lopsided. Even though it wasn't the prettiest cake, it sure did taste good.
Anyhow, this post isn't about carrot cake, it's about extras! I frequently get asked how many extras I have in my ten-item wardrobe. Either that or people ask me to tell them how many they should have. This will truly be different for everyone.
Please watch today's videoto hear my response. I hope my insights will help you along your ten-item wardrobe journey. Thank you for watching .

Comments of the Week
Last week's post on Dressing Up for No Reason struck a chord! There were so many amazing comments. Here are two of them:
Kristen writes, "Jennifer, I was that woman! Then I read all your Madame Chic books and they helped me change how I viewed my wardrobe. They did exactly what you said, helped me be feminine and chic but in a way perfectly suited to me. All in ten items! ❤️
I do get comments often about where I’m going dressed up - but I’m getting used to them. It is an awkward phase!
And I also have found it’s made me more productive overall - it’s amazing how what you wear speaks in such a powerful way to the rest of your life. Not even just to others but to yourself! So glad you shared your lessons from Madame chic!"
Paula writes, "You are beautifying the world, several ladies at a time, Jennifer! I agree with you that one is much more productive when dressed nicely for the day. I have found it interesting that so many women go shopping for clothes, but while they are shopping they often are not dressed so nicely. I like some of the replies your listeners have ready for those who ask why they are dressed up. We are an older couple and we are very frequently, especially my husband who wears a suit and tie to weddings and funerals, complimented on how "regal" we look. Our granddaughter told us recently that her friends comment on how striking and "presidential' we look. We do not dress much differently from what we did over 50 years ago when we were single! I recall when folks dressed up to fly. It is so energizing to see a woman or man who is dressed well. While I was on jury duty a while back, after the first day, I decided to dress up more. We had to walk in front of observers in the court and we were in a position of judging someone, so I felt we needed to respect our "job." It was so fun to notice that others, men and women, began to dress up more for the remainder of the trial. Keep on raising the bar, dear Jennifer."
Kristen and Paula, thank you for your testimonies! I absolutely loved hearing from you and everyone else who commented on that post. I am grateful for this online community we have where we can encourage each other.
Today I would love to know how you handle the extras in your ten-item wardrobe. Do you struggle with having too many or too little? Do you find your extras compliment your core items well? Do you have any questions? Let us know in the comments.
Thank you for joining me and I'll see you soon!

Dressing Up for No Reason | Ten-Item Wardrobe
One of The Chic Assignments for April is to get dressed up for no reason. By dressed up, I mean dressed in clothes appropriate for the occasion. You may have a pretty spring dress that you're saving for a special occasion. Or maybe you have a nice pair of white slacks you'd like to wear, but you're afraid you're going to get them dirty. We love to buy beautiful things, but tend to not use them for fear of ruining them. So we save them for later.
In Lessons from Madame Chic, I have a chapter called, Always Use the Best Things You Have. This doesn't just apply to dishes, but to dressing as well. It may seem awkward and uncomfortable at first if you're used to dressing casually every day (yoga or sweat pants, or even the jeans and tee shirt uniform), but eventually you will break away from that form of dressing and be more comfortable dressing up. I went through this transformation. It didn't happen overnight, but gradually. This video is for any lady out there who is feeling in a rut with her dressing and wants to start wearing her nicer items on a regular basis. I hope you enjoy today's video.

I think scheduling will be very effective and joyful - using pretty planners and nice pens! Waking up early has been a big stress-relief for me, as I feel like I have some time to myself every day."

Comment of the Week
SR K writes, "Jennifer - I wanted to share with you how much I appreciate this series! Your chic assignment resulted in my soon to be five year old experiencing his first concert! I listened to the link of Stephan Hauser’s Ave Maria on cello (stunning!), which led me to discover his musical partnership of 2 Cellos (also amazing!) While visiting my parents for a family event I discovered that 2 Cellos was in concert the one night we were in town. (What are the chances?) My son has become enamored with Hauser/2 Cellos so my husband and I purchased tickets last minute and took our son for his first concert experience! Incorporating the arts has brought such joy to our lives - thank you! ❤️"
Thank you to you and your son! I love Hauser's music and also enjoy him in 2Cellos. I'm thrilled your son is interested in Classical Music because of The Chic Assignment! Wonderful!
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend. Happy Easter and I'll see you on Monday!

Surroundings
A poem by Jennifer L. Scott
We want them to comfort us.
On a hard, long day
In the trenches of daily life
We look to our surroundings to bring us cheer.
It isn’t always so.
Sometimes our surroundings
Are the cause of our despair.
Other people have a way
Of orchestrating that.
But amidst every mess,
And every day that seems impossible to surmount,
Is the breakthrough of gratitude
For our surroundings-
Whatever state they are in.
One can always find loveliness, if one truly looks
And today that is what I found.

Thank you to everyone who has taken my new eCourse, How to be Efficient at Home. These are the last few days to get the course at only $5. The price will go up later this week. I do this to cover the costs that Teachable charge me to host the courses. You are able to access the courses at any time and as many times as you like.
Oxana writes, "Dear Jennifer, I am very grateful to you for this course! It points out the main pillars of home efficiency. I am definitely determined now to work on the points that haven't become my habits yet. You have inspired me a lot!
By the way I live in Moscow, Russia. We have long winters here (November - March) with very little sun. It always affects me with the lack of joy and energy. But this winter I had an additional source of light, energy and joy: your books, videos and now this course! Thank you so much for doing all this for us! I've never thought of home chores as of something that could bring joy, I've always viewed them as my obligation as a housewife and the mother of 3. I used to look for joy outside my home: cultural events, vacations, shopping. Now I am learning to find joy in everything I do AT home and I love it! You've changed my mindset!
In one of your books you mentioned that you would like to be the Madame Chic for your family. You ARE already! Please continue being such an inspiration, encouragement and a good example of always presentable, smart and positive woman, wife and mother.
All the best and many blessings to you and your wonderful family!"
Oxana, thank you for your wonderful testimonial. I am so happy that the course has inspired you. It's so fun for me to connect with readers from all around the world!
