# Edgar Allan Poe # Jennifer plays the piano

Chic Assignment Check-In October, 2019

Welcome to The Chic Assignment check-in for October. Today is a Chic Assignment spectacular. Ben will be reading the 2nd half of The Raven and I will be playing Schubert's Serenade on the piano for you.

This is a longer video as I did not want to cut any corners, so here are the time stamps if you need to skip around:

Presentable sleepwear 1:43
Use your best 6:18
Edgar Allan Poe biography 8:19
Ben reads The Raven 17:03
Jennifer performs Serenade 22:01

The biography for Edgar Allan Poe is from the Poe Museum.

I perform Schubert's Serenade from a piano book that belonged to my grandmother. I always preface my piano performances by letting you know that my playing is full of flaws and errors, and yes, our piano could probably be tuned... but I share my performances to encourage you to just play! Play for fun. Play for joy. Play for beauty in your day. Don't worry if you have mistakes or bad tempo. Just play and enjoy without needing to be perfect, I certainly do :)

I truly hope you enjoyed today's video.

Comment of the Week
Katie writes, "Thank you so much for this reminder. I have taken a 6 month break from Facebook and noticed how much happier and calmer I feel during the six months. I don't feel like I'm missing out on things or that everyone has it together better than myself. Occasionally I'll take a peek on Facebook but I now know when I have been on too long because I become ungrateful.
When I start feeling ungrateful, I start singing "Count Your Blessings" and it turns my attitude back in the right direction.
I truly enjoy your blog and Youtube channel! You are a blessing!"

Dear Katie, I had a breakthrough moment where I realized I didn't need to post pictures of my children on Facebook if I didn't want to. I felt I had to keep up with birthdays, first day of school, etc. Once I realized that sharing wasn't necessary in that area, I have felt much freedom. I only share if I truly want to now and as a result, haven't shared on my personal Facebook page in several months. Thanks for your comment!

I hope you enjoyed today's video. I look forward to seeing you on the blog soon! Please keep your Chic Assignment updates coming. I enjoy reading them very much!

Thank you so much for introducing me to the 1 for U nightgown and dressing gowns. I have found it more and more difficult to purchase well made gowns in department stores. These are affordable, well made and quite comfortable.
I truly enjoyed hearing you and your husband read The Raven. It's long been one of my favorites.

Thank you Jennifer, this was lovely.

I have two nylon nightgowns that I just love and they've lasted beautifully for years. (Shadowline brand) They are surprisingly comfortable - warm in winter and cool in summer. I have a little trouble finding dressing gowns I like, but I only use them about half an hour each evening, so I'll stick with the one I have. It's nice.

Great idea to ask Ben to read - he does a wonderful job! One suggestion- I always have a little trouble with accents, so I struggled with some of the words. Maybe "copy/paste" the words onto your blog so we can follow along? (I think you did that with a Robert Frost poem you read in a past utube?) Do more, Ben!

Use something I've been saving - I did it with 2 things: 29 years ago I had a “hope chest” with 2 sets of flatware: a nice sturdy set, and a shinier (Oneida stainless) “good” set. The Oneida set has been used maybe ten times in all these years, so I actually gave away the old used set (reserving a few sets for traveling) and brought out the shiny Oneida! It should last the rest of my life.
I cannot believe I did this, but I pulled from my trunk my grandma’s handmade, antique ecru crocheted tablecloth. Mind you, this was not one hastily made with yarn, but tediously made from crochet thread. But I remember she kept it on her dining table all the time (not the kitchen table). Now, my table is round and hers was a small oblong, but if I allow the 4 corners to drape a little between the chairs, it fits beautifully!! Why have a never even tried this before? I do fold it back for meals - and have a thick colored cloth underneath. (Also, it’s just my husband and me.) I am enjoying it immensely. Thank you!

And thank you for playing piano for us. From that very first performance awhile back, you have motivated me to get out my old piano books and I have been playing again, ever since. I'm about at the same level as you are, so I bought a copy of that "Adult Student" book - it looks strangely familiar, so perhaps my mom once owned it? Can't wait to learn a few pieces from it.

We appreciate you!

Dear Jennifer,

thank you so much for this Chic assignment. I always wear PJs, and recently bought some pretty new ones and got rid of the old and tattered ones, so I did not feel this part of the assignment applied to me necessarily. But when I searched for a dress to wear in my wardrobe the other day, I found an old cotton dress that I never wear. I tried it on, and although it fits, is definitely something I would not wear out. It looks much more like a hostess dress, very long, with a 70s vibe, all brown with a few lacy details. Then I thought about the chic assignment and decided to wear it as a winter nightgown, since it is a heavy cotton with long sleeves. I feel like a queen wearing this to bed now. Double win: I am using something pretty that was gathering dust in my wardrobe.
I loved watching this video, and you make me want to go back to my piano and work on my Schubert Impromptu.

On a very different note, my sis wrote this after reading The Raven in high school literature class:

Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore"
As his feathers fell to the floor
A ruddy blush his cheekbones bore
Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore".

I play classical music in my third grade classroom when we are doing writing. I have been incorporating the Chic Assignment suggestions and my students are loving listening to the different composers. Thank you for helping me bring culture to my students.

Hi Jennifer, I am enjoying your posts. May I offer one suggestion. I have become accustomed to cleaning with gloves on, and I love it. I find most of the long latex gloves hot, uncomfortable, and irritating to my skin since i am allergic to latex. Then i tried latex-free painter,s gloves. They come in a box of 50 pairs. They are thin, light-weight, and durable. I use them for doing dishes, cleaning, and for treating dirty laundry with detergents, which are hard on my hands. My hands stay soft and my manicure lasts much longer. I think you will like them.

A funny story for you....This happened when I was at university. I had just stepped out of the shower and was wrapped in my towel when I felt the house begin to shake. I came out into the living room to find my very religious flat mate shouting 'it's the second coming, it's the second coming'! I had visions of myself ascending into the sky wrapped only in my towel and all of the neighbours seeing me like this. I was horrified! Then I realised that we were actually having an earth quake (almost unheard of in Australia) and that all was going to be okay! The main earth quake was actually further south and we were just feeling the aftershocks.

I would like to ask for a few more specifics on the gloves recommended by "unknown"... some key words to look for while searching online, or a brand, perhaps? I know many gloves hold so much moisture/sweat inside that my hands are like wrinkly dishwater hands before I'm done. Other gloves I've tried are not waterproof enough to wash dishes in, or are too baggy, etc. Thank you in advance!
