The Chic Assignment Summer 2022

5:40 PM 1 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for Summer, 2022. Due to my travel and work schedule, we are pausing the monthly assignments and will be focusing on this one assignment for the entire summer. The check-in will happen organically throughout my summer videos. Monthly assignments will resume in September.

The Chic Assignment series is brought to us by The Chic Society, the private membership group on YouTube.  Joining The Chic Society gives you access to my exclusive members-only vodcast, which is published every Friday. I also do one livestream a month or do a Zoom call where we can all visit together and we now have a penpal program! Membership is only $1.99 a month (upper tiers are also available).

Chic Assignment No. 1 Listen to Rossini's William Tell Overture (finale)

Everyone can recognize the William Tell Overture finale. This month we are listening to a performance by The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. It is listed as one of the most famous classical music pieces everyone should know and was composed by Italian musician, Gioachino Antonio Rossini (1792 - 1868). We will learn more about Rossini later in the month.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Enjoy the artwork of John Constable

John Constable (1776 - 1837) was an English landscape painter from the Romantic period. He revolutionized the genre of landscape painting. You can view his artwork for free on John-Constable.org And we will dive into his landscapes more later in the summer.

His most famous work is The Hay Wain (1821) - public domain

Chic Assignment No. 3 Send a postcard to a friend this summer

We love letters here on the Daily Connoisseur but when was the last time you sent a postcard? My grandmother used to send me postcards all the time and they have become a lost art. I was reminded of them when my friend, Jenny Williams from Carrot Top Paper Shop, sent me a postcard in the mail. It was so delightful to receive this card, I wanted to make this an assignment. You can often find cards at your local drug store or in more "touristy" spots in your town. You can, of course, order some online too. Surprise someone you love with a postcard this month. Later in the summer we will check out the history of postcards and read some of the most famous postcards ever sent.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Engage in conscious relaxation

I know many of you find it difficult to relax... truly relax. Our to-do lists are so long and never seem to end. We tell ourselves we will relax once we get through those lists... but the end never comes! This summer let us engage in conscious relaxation. Schedule it in. Pause what you're doing... it can wait. And relax in whatever way means most to you. You might take a nap, or lay outside in the sun, or read a book, or enjoy downtime with your kids without being "productive". This conscious relaxation has been a boon to my health because I was running on empty for a long time! We will explore conscious relaxation later in the summer too.

7:07 AM 1 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in for May, 2022. Today we are going to dive into the lives of Robert Louis Stevenson, and Felix Mendelssohn, plus much more.

The Chic Assignment series is brought to us by The Chic Society, the private membership group on YouTube.  Joining The Chic Society gives you access to my exclusive members-only vodcast, which is published every Friday. Chic Assignment No. 1 Song Without Words Op. 19 No. 1 by Felix Mendelssohn (performed by Daniel Gortler)

Did you enjoy this beautiful piece? I played it all throughout the month...

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) was a German composer, pianist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Today we learn 5 interesting facts on the Romantic composer.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Enjoy the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) was a Scottish novelist and poet, most widely known for penning Treasure Island, and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He is also loved for his poetry.

We are reading from A Child's Garden of Verses today. You can also find Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry for free on the Poetry Foundation website.  Today we learn more about RLS's life and read more of his enchanting poetry.

Chic Assignment No. 3 Wear a jewelry piece you haven’t worn in a while

This month we wore a jewelry piece we haven't worn in a long time. I found that jewelry that is stored away is likely to be forgotten. Regularly go through your jewelry boxes to see what you have been missing. My favorite jewelry boxes are from Music Box Attic DAILYC20 for 20% off

Chic Assignment No. 4 Write down your strategy to stay calm

This month I shared 5 Ways to Take the High Road and Remain Unbothered. I hope you benefited from the information in this video and found some strategies to remain calm. Write these strategies down so you can become more intentional. The journal I share in the video is by DesignWorks Ink.

As we explore the art of expressing our true style, we should not forget the pieces we already have. Find a piece of jewelry (or other accessory) that you have not worn for a long time. Wear it at least once this month and see how you feel.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Write down your strategy to stay calm

As we explore the concept of gratitude and hopefully expand our capacity for it, we are going to further explore strategies for successful and grateful living. This month, I am sharing a new UNBOTHERED video that will help you devise a strategy to remain calm in the face of adversity. Write this strategy down so you can become more intentional.

The Chic Assignment April 2022

1:24 PM 1 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for April, 2022.

Luigi Boccherini attribution: I, Sailko, CC BY-SA 3.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

Chic Assignment No. 1 Enjoy Minuetto by Luigi Boccherini.  Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini (1743 -1805) was an Italian composer and cellist who influenced the development of the string quartet and who composed the first music for a quintet for strings, as well as a quintet for strings and piano. We are going to listen to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the late Lavtian conductor, Mariss Jansons.

Chic Assignment No. 2
Explore the artwork of Henri Matisse
(1869 – 1954). Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French artist, known for his expressive use of color.

La Musique (1939) by Henri Matisse

You can see Matisse's paintings for free on Wiki Art. Let us know which piece is your favorite. We will learn more about Matisse in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 3 Dress up for no reason this month
Something special happens when you decide to dress stylishly for no reason. You are telling yourself that you are special enough to adorn yourself well for everyday life, which, in turn, boosts your self-esteem and self-respect.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Replace a recurring negative thought with one of gratitude
To build on the gratitude and joy we have been journaling so far this year, this month, when you experience a recurring negative thought, replace it with one of gratitude. For example, right before you do the dishes, you might think, "I hate doing the dishes!" This may be true, but stop yourself before you get to the end of the sentence and replace it with, "I am so grateful to have dishes to do." Or some other thought of gratitude. This instantly elevates the experience and brings gratitude to the forefront of our mind, instead of displeasure.

I hope you enjoy The Chic Assignment this month. I look forward to hearing about your experience. Let us know on social media by using the hashtag #TheChicAssignment. Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see you on Monday! Love, Jennifer

The Chic Assignment March 2022

6:32 AM 5 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for March, 2022 Before we begin, I would like to express my heartfelt support for the people of Ukraine and everyone who is affected by the war. I have been praying for your safety and for swift peace.

1 Enjoy Vivaldi's Spring from The Four Seasons

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, most famous for The Four Seasons- a group of four violin concertos which give musical expression to each season of the year. We are going to listen to Vivaldi's Spring from The Four Seasons performed by The Capital String Quartet

We will learn more about Vivaldi in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Explore the poetry of T.S. Eliot (1888- 1965)

T.S. Eliot was an American poet, essayist, publisher, playwright, literary critic, and editor. He is considered one of the 20th centuries major poets.

T.S. Eliot (1888 - 1965)

You can read his poetry for free on Poetry Foundation and you can purchase T.S. Eliot Collected Poems

Chic Assignment No. 3 Prepare your ten-item wardrobe for the upcoming season

It's that time of year again: we will be preparing the transition of our wardrobes. Depending on where you live, you will either be preparing for spring or autumn, but the key is to be intentional. What do you need to get rid of from your wardrobe this time last year? It's time to rid yourself of clothes that are worn out, not your true style, and don't fit in your lifestyle anymore. It's ok to donate clothing and move on to something that is more your style. When you donate clothes you are blessing other people and that piece might be better suited to them.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Journal your joy. Last month we focused on gratitude. By doing so we magnified what we were grateful for. This month we will journal our joy. You can do it whatever way you want, but if you need a prompt, you can write 10 things that bring you joy. That might be different from what you're grateful for. By journaling our joy we will expand our capacity for joy and will find that we experience more happiness and appreciation throughout the month.

The Chic Assignment Check-In | February 2022 Van Gogh + Valerie Coleman

6:30 AM 5 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in for February.  We are exploring the music of Valerie Coleman, learning about Van Gogh's biography, journaling our gratitude and observing the birds. What fun it has been!

1 This month we discovered the music of Valerie Coleman. Valerie Coleman is Performance Today's Classical Woman of the Year and one of the top 35 Women composers in classical music, according to The Washington Post. The piece we are listening to is Imani Winds performing Valerie Coleman's "Umoja."

Learn more about Valerie and visit her website.

Chic Assignment No. 2  Enjoy the art of Vincent van Gogh

In today's video we dive into the tragic biography of Vincent van Gogh. If you've never heard the story of his life, you will find his story fascinating. How did Van Gogh go from a struggling and impoverished artist who didn't think much of his work to being regarded as one of the greatest artists in human history? You can learn more about Van Gogh and see his art for free here. Buy reproductions of Van Gogh's art for your own walls here, or buy a book with his complete works here

Chic Assignment No. 3 We are journaling our gratitude this month. I have found that doing so increases my capacity for gratitude and alters the way I think. I am more apt to find the "good" in every situation and go out of my way each day to find more things to be grateful for. What has your experience been?

Chic Assignment No. 4 We observed the birds this month. While staying in La Jolla, California earlier in the month, I befriended this magnificent Osprey. Observing the birds and being aware of their presence, habits, and calls bring us gloriously into the present moment. The Peterson Bird Guide for North America has always been a valuable guide for me in identifying bird species.

I'd like to give recognition to the upper tiers in The Chic Society. Members with links are highlighted below the graphics.
