Welcome to a unique homemaking day in the life. Today we are exploring the art of the fall table setting. I'm sharing an inviting way to style a Thanksgiving or fall table for an elegant, but casual dinner party.

When coming up with a table-setting plan, I like to look at beautiful books for inspiration. My favorite resources are the Hoffman Media books from Victoria Magazine. Today, I take inspiration from Victoria Magazine and The Art of Tea.
I'm working with the Spode Woodland China for this autumn table-setting. I have always admired the Spode Woodland collection, but could never find a comprehensive and full collection online. Riverbend Home carries the full line in their Thanksgiving shop. DCHOL10 for 10% off (some exclusions apply)
For this table, I am using my jacquard cream tablecloth (linking similar as mine is around ten years old) that I have had for so many years. A good jacquard tablecloth can last for a decade or more if you take care of it well. A plaid table runner adds a nice autumnal touch and creates a beautiful line to base the settings off of. The rattan placemats create a new layer of texture and the wood tones of the mats warm the table. Matching plaid napkins in gold rings are placed on top of the Woodland china. Our candlesticks are placed on either side of the bay leaf bouquet. When fresh flowers are not available, I like to use greenery available in the garden. Our bay leaf tree provides fragrant and unique bouquets. The leaves can also be dried and used in cooking. The crystal iced tea glasses are very affordable on sale at only $19 for 4. The chief aim for an autumnal table is to create a cozy atmosphere through colors, textures, and layers. These elements would be excellent for a Thanksgiving table, special fall dinner, or other more substantial afternoon tea.

What beautiful dishes, an elegant display, and a wonderful poem too! I actually prefer the bay leaves to flowers. Your tree is incredible. For Christmas dinner you could have some cranberries and floating candles in vases... the red berries and green leaves with the candlelight would be stunning!
I love all of this! Simply beautiful! I have beautiful china I inherited. Sadly, I never saw the "special occasion" china actually being used, How do you transition from a beautifully laid table to service? Do you remove the dishes after everyone is seated? Plate the food, then return to the table? Remove as courses are finished?
I loved this video. It was so well done. I really like the plaid too, bay leaf decor, poem, a snippet of the dinner laughter and conversation, and even the clean up in your cozy robe and turning off all the lights. Also so interesting to learn about the leaf design on those beautiful plates. I would like to know how you handle plating the food, etc too. Are you ever too tired to want to tackle dishes after an evening like that, especially if it becomes a late night, or do you just push through?
What a wonderful post Jennifer. I loved hearing your 'behind the scenes' thought process in regards to all the aesthetic decisions. A beautifully laid table truly marks a special occasion, and makes it all the more memorable to those who share in it. I had never thought of using bay leaves in place of more conventional flowers and greenery, but you have inspired me! I placed a large vase full of leafy rosemary on the dinner table last night and received many a comment on the attractive aroma the arrangement gave off. Thank you for reminding me that where there is a creative will, there is always a way!

Traci- Thank you! This time everyone picked up their plate and went to the food, buffet-style, and then sat back down. That tends to work for larger gatherings as I feel uncomfortable choosing the portion sizes for guests.

I loved this video!! I love decorating a table for family and friends. I learned this from my mother and I appreciate when I see the younger generation carrying this beautiful tradition. I admired your use of bay leaves from your yard, sadly, my husband does not like outside cuttings of greenery at the dinner table other than flowers. I also enjoy when you type your comments. I just love to see your generation bringing back gracious hospitality. My Grandparents, parents and I all used to entertain family and friends frequently. It is so special to create a beautiful environment and share a meal with people you care for.
