Homemaker: The Ultimate Career?

6:16 AM 5 Comments

C.S. Lewis famously said, “The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only - and that is to support the ultimate career. ”
Well my fellow homemakers… we are going to examine this assertion today. If it’s true… there is much to ponder.

OK, I know what you’re thinking. How can cooking, cleaning, and raising children really be a career? Can what we do wield actual power like an impactful career should? Don’t people normally get paid for careers? Ha!

Well we know we don’t get paid to do what we do… our reward is a lot deeper. So how can homemaking be the ultimate career?

First, let’s look at the definition for career: an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress. Synonyms are: Profession, occupation, vocation… calling.

A calling.

Let’s look at what a homemaker does on a basic level. Homemakers keep the house clean and organized. They make meals. They raise children. Yes, this is what happens on a basic level, but let’s look deeper at this. There’s a reason why it’s been called the “ultimate career”… there must be more there. How is that a calling?

Homemakers make a home. A home. The most important place you’ll ever know. They orchestrate the environment. They create a safe, loving, comforting space for their families. They pour their hearts into the details of the work that they do, often putting themselves last. They sacrifice, they toil. For what? To create a beautiful family environment. They are literally making memories.

A calling.

When we think of the world out there. Often it can be harsh, cut-throat and competitive. When you come home, you feel as though you are in a haven. Is there any place more important on earth than one’s home? When your home life is in order, everything else falls into place. Isn’t that the truth.

As homemakers we are called to attend to the details of daily life at home. Our little actions may seem insignificant. Scrubbing pots, wiping countertops, wiping noses, fixing collars and pigtails, reading stories, baking treats... But truly, we are raising up the next generation for greatness and instilling good habits in them as well. Habits of love. We are making a home.

So yes, we don’t get paid for our career. Not monetarily, anyway. But it is a calling. And the payment comes in the form of generational blessings and bountiful love that seeps into everything our family does.

And all other careers do exist to support the ultimate career. Because home life is one unifying aspect we can all rally around. We all want to thrive at home for the greater good.

So my fellow homemakers, you might have homemaking as your only profession, or like me, you might also work another job as well. Either way, please see the value you have in your career. Yes, the ultimate career.

I hope you enjoy today's video.

The Chic Assignment | February 2020

5:45 AM 6 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for February, 2020.

In this first Chic Assignment of the year, we are focusing on romance. I have chosen one of my all-time favorite (and most romantic, may I add) classical music pieces, we are studying beautiful impressionistic artwork, and striving to improve our everyday lives.

⚜️ Chic Assignment no. 1 Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor. I have raved about this piece many times on the channel, but we have never actually studied it for a Chic Assignment. What a better time than now to dive into the deeply romantic Adagio in G Minor. This performance by HAUSER has over 45 million views, and for good reason! Enjoy this show-stopping performance with your family this month.

We will learn more about Albinoni in the check-in later in the month.

⚜️ Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the works of Edgar Degas. Degas is one of the most famous French painters of the Impressionistic period. His ballerinas are at once dynamic and romantic.

The Star, 1878 by Degas Image from Edgar-Degas.net

You can see Degas' complete works here.

If you would like to buy a canvas print of Degas' works, you can find a great selection here.

Here are some interesting books on Degas: Degas: A Passion for Perfection , Degas: His Life and Works in 500 Images.

⚜️Chic Assignment no. 3 Intentional downtime. Notice how you spend your downtime this month. If you have a few minutes to yourself, do you inevitably reach for your phone? Do you spend it mindlessly surfing the internet? If you would like to get more intentional about your downtime this month, join me in noticing your downtime patterns and perhaps changing them.

⚜️ Chic Assignment no. 4 Do something romantic this month. This does not have to involve a significant other. You can place a pretty bouquet by your bed, read poetry by the fireplace, or enjoy a cup of tea in a bubble bath as some examples. Add some romance into your daily life this month and notice the benefits.

I hope you enjoy today's video and this month's assignments. Be sure to check in with your findings and you could be mentioned in The Chic Assignment check-in later in the month. Share this with your friends and tag me on social media with the hashtag #TheChicAssignment

See you on Monday!

The Case for Presentable Undergarments

6:37 AM 1 Comments

I would love to know... what is the state of your underwear drawer? Many times women focus on the outer garments in the quest to look presentable always. In today's video I make the case for presentable underwear too.

Why presentable? No one is going to see our undergarments, after all. Who cares what they look like?

Good undergarments are the foundation of a beautiful outfit. Wearing presentable underwear can be your delicious secret and really help elevate your confidence throughout the day.

Montelle Intimates and Fleur't both sent over their latest styles and the technology has come a long way! These undergarments are not only beautiful, but don't dig into the skin, don't pill, have no VPL (visible panty line) and give no wedgies (😆) Yes, that is their promise to you.

Of course, you can find presentable undergarments in many different places and at different price points, but we will use the ones I'm sharing today as a case study.

If you are interested in the undergarments I show today, use the code JENNIFER20 along with my links to receive 20% off at both Montelle Intimates and Fleur't.

This beautiful set is from Montelle Intimates in their Moonlight & Roses collection
Moonlight & Roses high-waisted panty is a work of art with the different coordinating laces. The design on this panty is not only beautiful, but functional as well.
Moonlight & Roses longline mystique bra is a gorgeous match. This bra does have a wire and offers a smooth (and non-protruding line) from cup, to lace, to strap.

Here we have the Wire-free tee shirt bra in almond spice. It's amazing that there is no wire on this bra as it has all of the engineering and support of a wire bra. With no lace, it's the perfect bra to wear underneath a smooth tee or blouse. The two matching panties for this bra are the Brief in almond spice and the Hipster in almond spice (pictured).

The Brazilian all-lace panty from Montelle Intimates gives the benefits of thong underwear (no pantylines) without the uncomfortable feeling. This culotte lace panty is beautiful and designed to be high-functioning as well.

Here we have the two different styles of the Fleur't iconic boy short. The high-waisted short is in white Chantilly (High-rise, tummy control, eco-friendly, buttery-soft, comfortable, no-piling- wash as much as you want - on gentle & hang dry, wedgie-free) and the standard iconic boy short is in Seashell (Low-rise, eco-friendly, buttery-soft, award-winning comfort, no-piling wash as much as you want - on gentle & hang dry, wedgie-free). I have worn this style for years and they are fabulous. The JENNIFER20 discount code works for Fleur't too.

Not pictured here is the High-waisted smoothing brief in black from Montelle Intimates. This could be the most functional and flattering of all of the underwear. I love how much coverage it gives while smoothing. The v-cuts on the legs give it a vintage vibe.

Also, I should mention that when it is "that time of the month" I use what is called a "period panty" such as this 3-pack on Amazon.

I hope you enjoyed this chat today and that it inspired you to go through your undergarments. If you already have presentable panties and bras, I encourage you to wear them on a daily basis. If not, it is a great idea to budget for them for future purchases.

Audrey B. writes, "Love this. Thank you! I'm so tired always with babies back to back so I'm always in leggings and sweats. I dream about dressing presentable because appearance says SO MUCH about you. I used to be in management for hotels so I'm used to looking very presentable and I miss it! I know my husband would love to see me dress up more."

Hi Audrey, thanks for writing in. I know that it is hard to get motivated when you have small children. I know you will get back to dressing presentably and feeling great soon. Thank you!

I hope this video has given you inspiration to update your undergarments. If you are feeling brave, let us know the state of your underwear drawer :)

Handshake Snubs: Classy or Trashy?

5:25 AM 5 Comments

Handshake snubs from prominent figures always seem to make the news. Why does something as seemingly insignificant as a handshake mean so much to people?

Handshakes are (for the most part) a universal gesture of mutual respect. It is the greeting of dignitaries, politicians, businesspeople, sports figures, and people just like you and me. So when a handshake is snubbed, it's a major sign of disrespect.

There are generally three reasons why a handshake would be snubbed: genuine mistake, blatant disregard, and germaphobic worries.

Today, we are looking at recent handshake "snubs" that have made the news. Oh yes, we are looking at royalty, politicians, First Ladies, and sports figures. Some of these reported handshake snubs are not as they appear... In fact, out of the case studies we are looking at today, only one of them stands out to me as blatant disregard.

Of course, there are always exceptions, however, I believe that reciprocating a handshake, even if you do not like the other person or disagree with them, is the classy thing to do. It shows that you are able to transcend your differences for a brief moment in time. It does't mean you agree with them, or condone what they do, but it does allow you to "take the high road", if only for that brief moment.

Let us know what you think of the alleged handshake "snubs" featured in today's video.

M. Williams writes, "About 15 years ago an older woman gave me the best comment ever when I complained about messes and fingerprints everywhere.
She replied ever so loving and gently, "Someday your home will be perfect everyday. And all your children will be gone and you will be alone."
I went on the have three more children after that and I haven't complained."

Such good advice, M. I remind myself of this constantly... it helps.

How to Mix Patterns & Textures for Chic Winter Dressing | Ten-Item Capsule Wardrobe

5:17 AM 2 Comments

I'm using my outfit as a case-study for how to mix pattern and texture in an elegant way.

I love to mix patterns in the same color family to create a subtle interest in an outfit. I also mix the various textures of suede, leather, and wool in today's outfit.

Featured in the video:
basket weave dot dress (similar)
cropped black twist tee
fleece-lined tights
riding boots (similar)
plaid coat (similar)
aviator sunglasses (linking similar here)
Louis Vuitton handbag (I am listing various satchels from Nordstrom here)
My phone case is Casetify

Also mentioned
Thursday Boot Captain boot
faux fur scarf

I start with a layering look that is a favorite of mine: cropped tee (or sweater) over a dress. This gives the impression of wearing an elegant skirt without the awkward cut-off at the waist. The riding boots add a nice height to the outfit.

Adding my favorite plaid coat brings a new pattern and texture dynamic to the outfit beautifully.

The final addition of accessories with sunglasses and printed handbag, round out the outfit.

I encourage you to take inspiration from historical periods and literature. I love the Victorian Era as well as Sherlock Holmes. Those two combinations are the inspiration for today's look.

I hope you enjoy today's video.

Comment of the Week
Earlier this week, I published a blogpost explaining the frustrating ad situation on my blog. Google has placed "auto ads" on my website, which is why you sometimes see so many banner ads. I have since disabled auto-ads, but some of the ads are still popping up. It is a mystery to me!

Heather wrote, "I'm impressed with your integrity that you even care what the reader view looks like. When I click through to other blog posts, usually for a recipe I found on Pinterest, it is obvious that there are a LOT of bloggers who do not care that the reader view is downright unpleasant."

Thank you very much, Heather. Your experience as a reader does mean a lot to me and I appreciate your comment.

I would love to know how you like to mix color and texture in the wintertime. Share your tips and observations with us and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week.

Out-of-Control Ads (Problem Hopefully Fixed)

8:06 PM 6 Comments

Dear Readers,

I hope you are all doing well and are having a lovely week. We spent the weekend in Catalina celebrating my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. It was a beautiful weekend and I filmed an outfits of the weekend video, which is now on YouTube.

Something has been happening on my blog for awhile now that has bothered me and I'm sure you probably noticed it... Google Ads. And lots of them! I noticed this a few weeks ago, but to be very honest, I am so busy with the kids and work I didn't have the time to figure out how to fix it. I found myself very frustrated with the large banner ads on the blog because I never placed them there.

I put it on my to-do list to look into it (did I enable some strange ad feature without knowing it?) but I never got around to investigating it. (Anything technical or to do with websites really confounds me. It's actually amazing that I run a blog in the first place.) It wasn't until I received an email of complaint from a reader tonight that prompted me to look into it again.

My chief frustration was this: I completely disabled Google ads on my blog, but they were still popping up. After much research, I found out that Google implemented a new feature called "Auto Ads" that I was automatically enrolled in (I did not opt for this) where they place ads where they like. It is explained in this article here. I went to check, and sure enough, I was enrolled in Auto Ads, even though I never opted for this and did not know what it was. So I have since disabled that feature and things should go back to normal.

I apologize for the inconvenience and aggravation this may have caused.

I appreciate your understanding and, for my long-time readers, sticking with me through it all. As I am homeschooling with four children (including a baby), I find myself in the busiest time of my life. My work is also very meaningful to me, so I make time to fit it in as well and make it a priority. The joy with my work continues to be found in you, the reader, and I appreciate you very much.

Another change you might notice is that I now approve comments before they are published. I was receiving a lot of spam comments in the past and my monitoring of the comments has completely eliminated that problem. So if you write a comment, it will be sent to me for review, and I will publish it.

I have taken away the ability to comment anonymously as I found that the only people who did so, had negative things to say :)

Thank you, as always, for your support of my work. You make it all worthwhile.

With gratitude,

Jennifer

**Update** It's the next day and I am still seeing the large banner ads, even though I disabled Auto-ads and even demonetized the entire blog. I am still getting to the bottom of it. Thank you for your patience.

How to Remain Dignified in the MESS

6:59 AM 3 Comments

If you have little children in your family, a messy house is inevitable. Yes, you can teach them over time how to be tidy and pick up after themselves. My book, Connoisseur Kids, has excellent tips on how children can not only become tidy, but love being tidy as well. However, when you have very little ones, such as babies or toddlers, a mess is often inevitable.

Our lives should not crumble just because our surroundings are sometimes messy, however. Life does go on... we just need coping strategies and a good perspective, which I share with you today.

Today's video shares 5 tips to remaining dignified in the MESS. I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject. What is your experience dealing with the perpetual mess of having a family? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

England vlog | Kew Gardens, Cotswolds + Home Tour

3:47 AM 3 Comments

What a wonderful holiday this has been. I share some of it with you in today's video. We visit Kew Gardens, The Cotswolds, to see my friend, Alena, and end up at The Lion King!

Many of you asked for a tour of our flat and I share that as well in today's video. The flat has been beautifully decorated by my mother-in-law, Jane, who has exquisite taste in interior design (and all other things, really). I wish I had the "before" pictures for you. She had the whole space gutted and completely transformed it.

Today's blogpost will be shorter as I am still away from home and have limited time to write... I hope the vlog will speak for itself.

Thank you for joining me for today's video.

Alena's books are English Etiquette and Ladies Like Us .
