Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in. I am excited to dive into each assignment with you in more detail. Let's begin.
Chic Assignment no. 1The Phantom of the Opera I hope you enjoyed listening to The Phantom of the Opera this month. I have provided a 1988 Tony Award performance from the great Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman that is so riveting and nostalgic. I know during this pandemic shut-down I have missed going to the theatre and I look forward to returning one day.
During the check-in we are learning about Andrew Lloyd Webber and the history of The Phantom of the Opera. I hope you enjoy learning the brief history of this celebrated musical.
Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the art of Gustave Caillebotte
We are studying French artist, Gustave Caillebotte this month. You can see his most famous paintings for free online. In the check-in, we learn more about his interesting, yet very short life.
The Floor Scrapers, 1875
In today's video I remark about the rejection of one of his most famous works, The Floor Scrapers, from the judges of the Salon of 1875. They deemed the painting to be vulgar because it depicted "common laborers". This strikes me as interesting because in the world of art there is nothing new under the sun. Artists of the past and artists of today (no matter what form your art takes) are judged by the "powers that be" on whether their art is acceptable. I've had this experience as a writer... it just goes to show that the big corporations don't always know what they are talking about. They deemed Caillebotte's, The Floor Scrapers, as vulgar, assuming that the public would not want to see laborers in action, but they were wrong. Just more motivation for artists to continue to create their work, despite the ignorant rejection of the establishment.
Check out the following two books for more on Gustave Caillebotte:
You can buy canvas reproductions of Gustave Caillebotte's paintings at Great Big Canvas
The Luncheon, 1876
Rue De Paris, Temps De Pluie, 1877
I would love to know... what is your favorite Caillebotte painting?
Chic Assignment no. 3 We have been focusing on presentable undergarments and sleepwear this month. I explored these subjects extensively in separate videos this month. You can watch the undergarment guide here, and the sleepwear guide here.
Chic Assignment no. 4 Enjoy cooking a new seasonal dish.
For the final chic assignment we are enjoying seasonal cooking. I hope that my What's for Dinner? videos have been a motivating tool for you to meal plan and incorporate seasonal recipes into your cooking routine. I have another one coming out soon for more inspiration.

Jennifer, I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your Chic Assignments and the research that goes into bringing them to us. I look forward to them every month and have learned so many things about music, literature and the arts. It has also inspired me to do further study on my own. I even impressed a colleague one day when we were talking about Georgia O'Keefe and why her paintings of a single flower are so large. I was able to give an answer because I remember you reading her story to us. God bless you and your family.......Stacie
Stacie, thank you so much! I appreciate your comment. That is a good feeling when you know about the subject matter and are able to have an enriching conversation with friends. Thank you! ~ Jennifer
I grew up listening to the original broadway recording of Phantom on cassette tape. My favorite song is Think of Me because of the excitement during that part of the musical, it's a pivotal moment for Christine, and I love the song too.
