How to Live a Formal Life on a Budget | 5 Tips

6:13 AM 0 Comments

Chapter 11 in Lessons from Madame Chic is Live Life as a Formal Affair. It's one of my favorite chapters because I truly believe that adding formality to your life can improve your every day experience in countless ways.

Today, I'm sharing 5 ways to live a formal life on a budget. Adding elegance to everyday life is attainable for everyone. I hope you enjoy today's video.

1. Clear the Clutter Clean up your space and work with what you have. Living in a cluttered environment does not give you an opulent formal life feeling. Decluttering is free, everyone can afford to do it. Most people need to do it, including myself. Go over your hot spots and the places that regularly need maintenance.

2. Consider the atmosphere You know that nice candle you received for your birthday? The one you’re saving for company? The one you say you will burn later? Burn it now. Put on classical music or healing atmospheric spa music (or whatever you like) to make your surroundings more serene and formal. Get excited about curating the atmosphere in your home, like you would curate an art museum.

3. Dress up every day Almost everyone has nice outfits that they are saving for special occasions. It’s time to break out of your comfort zone and wear these outfits on a daily basis. I’m not telling you to go shopping. I’m telling you to wear what you have. If you’re in the habit of dressing down everyday in sweats and exercise clothes, it might be time to try a change. Note now you feel when you wear nice clothing at home for no reason at all. You might feel uncomfortable. You will probably feel uncomfortable. Journal all those feelings and emotions and explore them. Why? What subconscious beliefs are you holding that tell yourself that you and you alone are not good enough to wear this outfit for no reason at all? Once you break through those feelings of discomfort you train yourself to enjoy dressing well on a daily basis and soon, you will become uncomfortable with dressing down in sweats. It will become unheard of to you.

4. Set the table Even if you have the most limited resources for setting a table nicely, most people have place mats or a tablecloth. Perhaps you have one or two tablecloths that you are saving for a special occasion… I encourage you to use those on a daily basis. What do you do when the special occasion comes? Don’t worry about that right now. Living a formal life aims to get you out of the mindset that you save your best things for later. Use your best things now. When you save your best things for later it’s like you’re subconsciously telling yourself that you don’t deserve the nice things every day. That’s not true. You do. So use your tablecloths, cloth napkins, and placemats. If you have none of these things, you can bring nature indoors. Create a bouquet from flowers or foliage outside.

5. Read more Reading... It’s so quaint! Does anyone do this anymore? Or do we prefer to binge watch television in our spare time? If you used to be an avid reader, but it’s been ages since you picked up a book, why not get back into it. Reading in the afternoon while well-dressed gives one a wonderful feeling. You will feel very formal and maybe even old-fashioned (in a good way). If you have access to your local library this is free! Of course, I recommend you read my Madame Chic series. But I also am leaving a long list of great books for you to dive into to help you on this journey: books by my talented author friends like Myka Meier, Bryan Kozlowski, Dr. Chloe Carmichael, Professor Richard Thompson Ford, Linda Przybyszewski and more.

5 Ways Living a Formal Life Helps You Maintain a Healthy Weight

6:30 AM 2 Comments

Usually when we discuss getting to a healthy weight, people focus on calorie reduction or cutting sugar, or following a specific diet. You might do what I do, which is intermittent fasting. All these methods can aid people in losing weight, but your overall lifestyle will ultimately determine the healthiness of your lifestyle and whether you will be able to maintain your healthy weight or not.

I'm sharing 5 ways living a formal life can keep you slim in today's video.  1. Living a formal life honors set mealtimes. When you live a more formal and structured life, you generally honor mealtimes. Breakfast, lunch, teatime (if you observe it) and dinner are seated affairs, usually at a nicely set table, whether by yourself or with others. When you set the table nicely and sit down at the appointed time, you are generally more present and conscious of what you are eating. The whole experience is structured and therefore more enjoyable. People who eat at irregular times everyday at their desk or in front of the tv or even while walking around the house are not going to be aware of what they are eating. Their eating experience will be an unconscious one. They won’t even know what or how much they are eating. The experience will be sloppy.

2. A Formal Life requires structure and there is less opportunity to snack out of boredom. It has generally been my experience that when I take part in mindless snacking, it’s because I’m stressed or bored… not because I’m actually hungry. When you live a formal life, you plan your day and have a structure around it. There is less opportunity to mindlessly snack.

3. When live a more formal life, dressing well becomes a priority and when you dress well, you are likely to notice weight gain as opposed to when you are wearing comfy elastic pajamas or sweat pants.

4. When you look good, you don’t want to mindlessly snack. We recently discussed the Goblin Mode phenomenon in a 3 articles on the subject of dress video. In Goblin Mode people just give up and let themselves go. When you have given up and don’t care about your appearance or your surroundings, of course you’re not going to care about what you eat or when you eat. In fact, the article referenced “downing Eggo toaster oven waffles with hot sauce over the sink because you can’t be bothered to put them on a plate.”

5. Formal Surroundings are Likely to Affect Your Behavior. Think about how you would act in a fancy restaurant vs. a casual one. There is a difference in behavior no matter how subtle. When your surroundings are more formal, you naturally become more self-aware- I think in a good way. Your posture improves, you become aware of how you’re dressed and how you present yourself. When the food is presented to you, you take it in. People purposely seek out fancy restaurants for special occasions for this reason.

5 Reasons to Live a More Formal Life

5:51 AM 3 Comments
In my first book, Lessons from Madame Chic, one of my favorite chapters discusses how we should live life as a formal affair. In today's video, we explore how living life as a formal affair can improve our health, style, and more.

 1. Living a formal life helps you maintain a healthy weight  If you think about the actions of a very casual life, you might picture someone in sweat pants sitting on the sofa, binge watching tv and mindlessly eating chips out of the bag, or ice cream out of the container. While this might feel comfortable, this mindless and informal behavior over time can be detrimental to your health. You aren’t paying attention to what you’re eating or what you’re doing and you are prone to overeating and gaining weight over time. When life is a formal affair, you snack less and enjoy your meals at designated meal times while sitting down to a well-set table. This allows you to remain present and notice what you’re eating. You’re likelier to eat healthier meals because of this, and have a more conscious experience.

 2. Living a formal life keeps you stylish When you become accustomed to a more casual life, your style gets casual too. Just look at popular culture… as time goes on we all get more casual and comfortable. It’s a gradual adjustment but when I was growing up, it was rare to see people outside in sweats and pajamas and now it’s commonplace. Look up images of how people used to travel on airplanes and compare that to what you see in the airport today. When you live a more formal life, you tend to still dress up on a regular basis. You don’t have the mindset that wearing day clothes is uncomfortable. Rather, you would become uncomfortable if you weren’t appropriately dressed. The thought of going out in public in tattered sweats would horrify you.

 3. Living a formal life keeps your mind sharp Living a more formal life beckons you to learn more than consume. Watching entertainment on tv or at the movies definitely has its place. But as society has become more casual, more people find themselves wasting vast amounts of time binge-watching tv shows or channel surfing and consuming content that they’re not even that thrilled about. When you begin to live a more formal life, you become interested in expanding your mind and learning more about topics that interest you. This is why I run my Chic Assignments, which encourage us to step out of ourselves and immerse ourselves in the arts each month. There’s nothing wrong with letting loose and relaxing in front of the TV but when you begin to live a more formal life, you aren’t really attracted to spending your time like that anymore. You start to listen to audio books while doing housework. You enroll in courses online. You turn your traffic commute into a university where you stretch yourself to learn.

 4. Living a formal life helps you keep good manners. As society becomes more casual, so do our manners… Have you notice that? Civility has declined in recent years. Tempers are high and fuses are short. When you slow down and live a more conscious and formal life, you are more apt to care about behavior and decorum and keep good manners and etiquette a top priority for you. If you haven’t already seen my video about remaining unbothered, I highly recommend you watch it. As we go through life we are going to encounter difficult people and situations. How we react to these situations is everything. The person who lives a more formal life employs restraint and calls upon proper etiquette. If everyone did this, wouldn’t everyday life be so much more pleasant?

 5. Living a formal life keeps your space clutter-free I recently did a video sharing the Madame Chic Method for living in a clutter-free home. If your surroundings are formal, you are likely to notice unsightly clutter more. More casual environments can attract clutter because, hey! Anything goes! But in a formal environment, you are attuned to living in a beautiful space and are more likely to sort through your cluttered zones on a regular basis.
