What CAN You Ask Someone You Just Met? Rude Questions Part 3

5:53 AM 6 Comments

When are you due? Oh, you’re not pregnant? Do you have children? Oh, you already have 2! Don’t know what causes that? Don’t you have a TV? Well, are you going to have any more? You have two boys? I bet you want to try for a girl. Well, what do you do for a living? Oh, do you plan to get a real job? Oh, you were in nursing? Well, I have this health condition. I wonder if you could help me with it. By the way, where are you from? No, I mean where are you from? No, I mean where are your parents from? What is your ethnicity? Really? Are you sure? You don’t look like you’re from that region of the world. Why are you so quiet? Are you mad? Well, good luck with the pregnancy. Oh, wait I forgot you’re not pregnant!

Did you find any of these questions annoying? If you did, you probably weren’t the only one. It contains many of the most commonly asked rude questions you reported to me in my recent videos on the subject. Today, I have swooped in to help, because I’m sharing a whole list of questions you can ask people you just met.

This is part 3 in an etiquette series I’m doing on rude questions- many of which I shared with you in the opening of this video. The problem with many of these questions is that they are intrusive. It’s not that you will never reveal this information to people, but you should only do so when you have established a relationship and feel comfortable with them. You don’t owe strangers answers to personal questions. So, what can you talk about when you’re meeting someone for the first time? What questions are safe to ask? Here are the list of questions.

Write these down and have a look at them before you go to your next big party.

How do you know the hosts?
What do you like to do in your free time?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
What’s your favorite show to watch?
Have you read any good books lately?
Have you been to any good restaurants in this area?
Have you visited any interesting places lately?
Do you like to watch sports? What are your favorites?
What blogs do you like to read?
What’s your favorite YouTube channel?
Where is a place you’ve always wanted to travel to?
What are your favorite things to do locally?
What type of music do you like to listen to?
What book are you currently reading?
What has been the best part of your week?
Do you have any pets?

I would love to know if you have any questions to add to this list. What are some great conversation starters you can use with someone you just met? Share them below and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog. I hope you enjoyed today's video

Rude Questions Part 2 | Observations and Reaction

5:42 AM 7 Comments

My initial post sharing 5 rude questions and how to respond, received a tremendous response from The Daily Connoisseur audience (and beyond!). It seems that most people have one question they have been asked (or asked repeatedly) that grates on them over time.

I received an outpouring of comments, both public and private, about your life experiences with these questions. In today's video I'm sharing my observations and reactions.

There are a few key takeaways that I'll write about here, but I do encourage you to watch the video to hear a more in-depth discussion.

⚜️Don't put yourself down when met with a rude question. Many people said their response to "When are you due?" was, "I'm not pregnant, I'm just fat!" You don't need to put yourself down in order to make light of the intrusive question.

⚜️Avoid saying something rude back. It can be so tempting. Sooo tempting, sometimes, to say something rude to someone who is rude to you. But avoid this temptation and take the high road. You will never regret it and will come off as a class act.

⚜️Wanting privacy does not equal being ashamed. It is perfectly acceptable to guard your information when you first meet someone. People need to show themselves approved to us before we trust them with information about ourselves. Follow your instinct. Some people might accuse you of being ashamed of who you are if you don't want to share various aspects of your life. Don't pay those people any attention. They will try to shame you into feeling bad for wanting to maintain your privacy. Don't fall for it.

Comment of the Week

Charlotte K. writes, "Isn’t there a quote that says, “There is beauty in the mundane”? I have been a homemaker for 45 years, and always gently corrected those who called me a “housewife”! 😉 It isn’t always fun, but so rewarding to look back on with satisfaction that while I was not always the most skillful or best household manager, I always cherished and was grateful for my life at home. I appreciate your homemaking series and love your outlook on life, Jennifer."

Thank you, Charlotte! Your comment was so lovely.

5 Rude Questions and How to Respond | Etiquette Chat

6:12 AM 11 Comments

In today's etiquette chat I'm sharing 5 commonly asked rude questions and how you should respond to them.

All of us have been asked a rude question at some point in our lives. When this happens, it takes you off guard. What did you do to merit this question? What is the questioner thinking? Do they even know they're being rude?

Many times the person asking the question does not have rude intentions (sometimes they do) so always try to remember that the other person finds you interesting and wants to know more.

I recently posed the question on my community tab: What is the rudest question you have ever received? The following 5 questions appeared regularly on that tab, showing that they are commonly asked questions.

⚜️When are you due? This was the most frequently asked rude question The Daily Connoisseur audience has been asked. An unassuming stranger asks when your baby is due. There's only one problem: you're not pregnant! Your response may vary depending on who is asking the question. A stranger in public merits no answer at all. If you're in a discussion with a friend, family member, or new acquaintance, you can simply shut it down by saying, "I'm not pregnant, thank you."

⚜️What do you do for a living? This question is often one of the first things asked upon meeting a new acquaintance in America. We are not defined by what we do for a living, however. That is just one small facet of who we are. A vague answer will suffice and then ask them about their hobbies and interests to change the subject. I learned this tip from etiquette expert, Myka Meier

⚜️Why are you so quiet? All introverts have been asked this question at some point in their lives. How do you respond to this without getting defensive? I like to compliment the other person and tell them I enjoy listening to them talk.

⚜️When are you going to have children? This question should never be asked, but sadly, is asked all the time. A simple "that's a private matter, thank you" will suffice.

⚜️What are you? This question is often asked of people who look ethnically ambiguous, like myself. People want to know our ethnic heritage. The bright side is that they are intrigued by us! Sometimes the way they ask the question can be rude, however. Watch today's video to hear the various ways in which you can answer.
