The Chic Assignment Check-In | March 2020

7:36 AM 3 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in for March.

Chic Assignment no. 1 Chopin Nocturne in C sharp Minor

This month we listened to Chopin Nocturne in C sharp minor and I recommended this video by Yueun Kim. I was amazed to connect with her this month in the comment section. This beautiful and sublime piece has gotten me though many stressful moments this month.

Chic Assignment no. 2 William Butler Yeats

In today's video I read two poems by W.B. Yeats. I also read from his biography on Encyclopedia Brittanica.

The Sorrow of Love
W. B. Yeats - 1865-1939

The quarrel of the sparrows in the eaves,
The full round moon and the star-laden sky,
And the loud song of the ever-singing leaves,
Had hid away earth's old and weary cry.

And then you came with those red mournful lips,
And with you came the whole of the world's tears,
And all the sorrows of her labouring ships,
And all the burden of her myriad years.

And now the sparrows warring in the eaves,
The curd-pale moon, the white stars in the sky,
And the loud chaunting of the unquiet leaves
Are shaken with earth's old and weary cry.

When You Are Old
W. B. Yeats - 1865-1939

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Chic Assignment no. 3 Enjoy your Food
I did a video earlier in the month on the disturbing trend I notice in "What I Eat in a Day" videos on YouTube. It seems that the only purpose for eating in the majority of these videos is to eat to get skinny, with little to no enjoyment of the actual food itself. I like to encourage people to enjoy their meals with a healthy attitude, like we did in Madame Chic's home.

Chic Assignment no. 4 Get your wardrobe ready for spring
Our Southern Hemisphere friends will be preparing for the fall, but either way, we are to prepare our wardrobes for the change in season. I shared my ten-item wardrobe end-of-season check-in with you this month where I shared my thoughts on my past wardrobe and also pieces that are to come for spring. It's a great idea to get intentional about your wardrobe because every year you draw closer and closer to your true style.

Here are some of the new pieces I show in today's video:
New jumpsuit for spring
blue dress for spring
More gingham ideas from Draper James
Gingham tee from Loft (similar)
(My gingham tee is from Loft but sold out)

Comment of the Week
Yoya Bear writes, "I just love this so much. People in my city are panicking over bread shortages in groceries. I just put a load of soda bread in the oven in my own lovely, calm kitchen. I was mildly mocked by some for becoming an expert home bread maker. No one is laughing now."

Yoya, I have been preparing to make my own bread too. It's going to be a necessity for many of us right now. Thank you for your comment!

I would love to know your experience with this month's Chic Assignment. Your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the channel.

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for March!

Chic Assignment no. 1 F. Chopin : Nocturne in c sharp minor for violin and piano_ YuEun Kim, Violin

We are revisiting my favorite composer, Chopin, for this month's musical selection. Check out this stellar performance by violinist, Yueun Kim.

Chic Assignment no. 2 William Butler Yeats

This month on the community tab on YouTube, I let you select the poet and Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, was the most popular choice. We are going to learn more about Yeats in the mid-month check in. You can read The Collected Poems of William Butler Yeats
Or you can check out his body of work at The Poetry Foundation website.

William Butler Yeats
On Woman, 1916

MAY God be praised for woman
That gives up all her mind,
A man may find in no man
A friendship of her kind
That covers all he has brought
As with her flesh and bone,
Nor quarrels with a thought
Because it is not her own.
Though pedantry denies,
It's plain the Bible means
That Solomon grew wise
While talking with his queens.
Yet never could, although
They say he counted grass,
Count all the praises due
When Sheba was his lass,
When she the iron wrought, or
When from the smithy fire
It shuddered in the water:
Harshness of their desire
That made them stretch and yawn,
pleasure that comes with sleep,
Shudder that made them one.
What else He give or keep
God grant me -- no, not here,
For I am not so bold
To hope a thing so dear
Now I am growing old,
But when, if the tale's true,
The Pestle of the moon
That pounds up all anew
Brings me to birth again --
To find what once I had
And know what once I have known,
Until I am driven mad,
Sleep driven from my bed.
By tenderness and care.
pity, an aching head,
Gnashing of teeth, despair;
And all because of some one
perverse creature of chance,
And live like Solomon
That Sheba led a dance.

The Chic Assignment Check-in March 2019 | Jennifer L. Scott

10:50 AM 16 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment check-in for March, 2019. This is becoming my favorite series on the channel. I am enjoying doing these monthly assignments with you and you are giving me so many wonderful recommendations. I'm thrilled and I hope you are too.

In today's video, I'm sharing my own updates for the month of March, including a piano performance of the Chopin Nocturne at the end of the video.

Before we begin, however, I just wanted to thank all of you who have taken my new eCourse, How to be Efficient at Home. I am enjoying connecting with all of you on the Course. There is so much camaraderie and support in the comment section, it's truly been amazing! Here is a testimonial from Mya, who recently finished the course:

Hello Jennifer. I enrolled in your new E-course yesterday and watched it all the way through. I had intended to watch it over a 3 day period, but I couldn't stop watching it. I even took notes. I plan to watch this over and over for inspiration. I consider myself a life long learner and enjoy taking classes, but right now I am very busy with motherhood, homemaking, work, etc. So this was perfect! And the best part is I can watch it over and over. This is my favorite of your E courses. Thank you so much for taking your time to create this course!
Best,
Mya

Thank you, Mya! And thank you to everyone who has taken the course. I really do appreciate your support of my channel.

Let's move on to my findings on The Chic Assignment for March:

🎵 I hope you have enjoyed listening to the Chopin piece. I certainly have. I play it for you today and use the music from The Chopin Gold piano book, which has easy compositions of the pieces. I really recommend this for novice or uncertain piano players like myself :)

🧺 The next assignment was to spruce up your laundry routine. So many of you said that laundry was your favorite task. Many others said that they found the laundry to be overwhelming. Other shared their top laundry tips. This month I have involved my kids more in the folding of the laundry. I've also strived to do my laundry to completion on any given day. I also have hung up this sign in our laundry room. I don't know why... but this sign brings me serious joy when I walk in there!

If you are looking for YouTube inspiration, check out my friend, Nikki's, laundry video, which is so beautiful to watch.

🖼 Our Claude Monet assignment was so fun! So many of you told me you loved "The Lunch". My favorite is the Woman with a Parasol...

I give my interpretation of the painting in today's video.

👗 Finally, we have been getting our ten-item wardrobes ready for the change in season. If you haven't already seen my ten-item wardrobe video where I transition my wardrobe from winter to spring, you can check it out here.

My items from Garnet Hill arrived, the cork wedges (which are so comfortable... I love them!) and my two lightweight sweaters.

Also, for more ten-item wardrobe inspiration, check out my friend Robin's video on her spring ten-item wardrobe for 2019. She gives a wonderful example of how to make the ten-item wardrobe work.

Finally, the three books that I am reading this month are:
168 hours by Laura Vanderkam, A Most Novel Revenge by Ashley Weaver, and Mother Culture by Karen Andreola

Comment of the Week
Katerina writes, I just cannot adequately tell you how much you’ve changed my life for the better. I am nearly 60 yrs young, and have always hated clothes shopping until 2 years ago when I was introduced to the concept of a capsule wardrobe and your 10-item wardrobe idea. Even my husband has gotten onboard in helping me because he knows what I’m looking for...not racks and racks of aimlessly endless colors and designs, but a navy/white stripped tee-shirt. The time I save!! I haven’t worn a dress in a very long time, but yesterday I wore one of the LandsEnd dresses that you’ve recommended with a navy cropped pullover sweater and heels. I got at least 6 compliments(!) and several friends saying “oh my gosh—you have legs!”. Thank you Jennifer.

Thank you for your wonderful testimonial, Katerina! I really enjoyed hearing how the books and channel have inspired you and changed your life for the better.

Thank you for joining us today. I would love to hear your Chic Assignment updates. Please leave them in the comment section below.

The Chic Assignment March 2019

6:22 AM 22 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for March! February's assignment was great success. So many of you participated and checked-in with your findings. I really enjoyed reading your book recommendations and your observations on the music too! We are going to continue now for March and I'm excited to see where these assignments take us.

We are going to focus on cultivating our minds, seeking out the arts, being efficient, and refining our ten-item wardrobes. So without further ado, here are the assignments:

🎵 Chic Assignment no. 1 Listen to Chopin Nocturne in E flat major Op. 9 No. 2 Chopin is my favorite composer and this is my favorite classical piece! I am linking a YouTube video by pianist Valentina Lisitsa that you can listen to for free. I am also linking a wonderful Chopin album that includes the nocturne and is worth owning if you are a Chopin fan.

This piece is shorter at around 4 minutes. I'd love for you to listen to it with a cup of tea. If you watched my Tasha Tudor video, you will remember that Tasha recommended sitting down with a cup of tea each afternoon to combat stress. This would be the perfect piece to play in the background. You could look at a book while you sip and listen, or you can chat with a friend, or you could just blissfully listen. It's up to you! Try to do this at least once a week.

🧺 Chic Assignment no. 2 Make your laundry routine more pleasurable

I have left this assignment vague on purpose because I am excited to see what you come up with! I'd like for you to make your laundry routine more pleasurable this month. Whether you sip a cup of tea or iced coffee while folding, or listen to a new audiobook or podcast, how can you make the usually dreaded laundry task more enjoyable? Other ideas include sprucing up your laundry room or dedicating a specific space in your home to doing laundry. Let us know how you improve your routine and your idea could spark inspiration in someone else.

🖼 Chic Assignment no. 3 Study the works of Claude Monet

We are going to seek out the arts and cultivate our minds with the works of French impressionistic painter, Claude Monet. You are all familiar with his iconic paintings, and this month we are going to study them and chose our personal favorites. Even if you are not a fan of impressionism, I'd love for you to take part in this assignment. I am linking a free website where you can look at many of his most popular works. Have a look at them and choose your favorite painting. Report back to let us know which one you like the best and why. When I do my check-in in two weeks, I'll share my favorite with you.

👗 Chic Assignment no. 4 Prepare your ten-item wardrobe for the seasonal transition

Most of us are getting ready to transition into spring (my Southern Hemisphere friends are transitioning seasons too, just the opposite way!). It's time to prepare your ten-item wardrobe. This will vary depending on where you live and the forecasted weather. If you are transitioning from winter to spring, you will be storing away all seasonal items such as heavy coats, snow gear, heavy sweaters, and scarves, for example. Start to bring out your spring items and prepare them for your closet by pressing or steaming them, trying them on to see if they still fit, and hanging them up in your wardrobe. If winter doesn't look like it's going away any time soon, you can simply prepare your spring ten-item wardrobe list. What will be returning and what will you need to purchase to fill in any gaps in your wardrobe? Please comment below on this video or the check-in to let us know how your wardrobe is coming along.

Even though I have not assigned a book for this month, we will continue to read at least one book, or listen to an audio book each month. That will always be a given. I have enjoyed so many of your recommendations so feel free to post what you're reading so you can give us ideas.

Share your findings with us on social media using the hashtags #thechicassignment and #dailyconnoisseur

I hope you enjoy today's video.

Comment of the Week
On last week's The Private World of Tasha Tudor video, Toni W. writes, "I too am a Tasha Tudor fan and have been for many years. I teach preschool and have read many of her books to many classes. I especially enjoy her illustrations of Corgi’s. Whatever it is that you love, share your passion with your children through books. They will pick up on your enthusiasm which makes learning more enjoyable. By the way, at the end of each year, I bring our pet Corgi named Albert into the classroom for the children to meet. It’s a page out of a book which comes to life! Magic!!"

Hi Toni, I loved your comment. I bet the children had such a great surprise when you brought your corgi to visit them. I agree with your recommendation on teaching through books. Thank you for commenting!

I look forward to hearing your progress on The Chic March Assignment. I'll see you next time!

Classical Music for Your Children: It's IMPORTANT

1:23 AM 24 Comments

With much of today's popular music being so dumbed-down and full of vapid lyrics at best, and violent and sexually explicit lyrics at worst, exposing your children to classical music is now more important than ever. In today's video, I make a case for why you should play classical music in your home and while you're driving. Of course, it's not the only type of music you should play, but if you introduce it to them while they are young, they will cultivate an appreciation for it now and be able to discern between enriching music and music that leaves a lot to be desired.

Here are some tips outlined in today's video:
- Play classical music in the car and play it in the home.

- Play it whether you feel like listening to it or not. If you only played it when you felt like listening to it, you might not play it very much.

- Regular listening will help them develop a love for it. The only reason why I like classical music is because I heard it in my home growing up and it gives me positive connotations.

- Much of popular music today is dumbed-down with repetitive, simplistic beats. Plus the lyrics are down right wrong in many popular songs. Do we want our children to sing those songs and have those lyrics in their head? While this might not be a popular opinion of mine, it has a lot of merit. Check out the lyrics of the songs on the top 40 lists across the country and truly examine whether you want your children to be saying the words in those songs.

- Not only listen to classical music, but learn about the composer's lives. Many of the great composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and Bach were true geniuses who cultivated their musical skills early in life.

Did you know that Mozart was writing his own compositions by the age of 6?! He wrote his first opera, Mitridate Re di Ponto, in 1770 when he was only 14 years old.

Chopin was composing and writing poetry at six, and gave his first public concerto performance at the age of eight. To make money in his early career, Chopin taught piano lessons. He was a big fan of Bach, so he made his students play Bach's compositions.

Did you know that Johann Sebastian Bach had 20 children? (How did he have time to compose? No seriously?)

Your homework is to listen to Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-Sharp Minor "Moonlight" Op. 27 No. 2 : III presto agitato. Click the link and listen to it on YouTube for free. I also list an album below which includes the song.

Now please note, before my critics get up in arms, I am not saying that all modern music is bad. Certainly not! I am saying that it is important to hold on to the appreciation of classical music, which has so many beneficial qualities. Playing classical music will instantly relax you. Your children will work and play longer if they are listening to classical music in the background. It stimulates your thinking and can boost your creativity. I have written most of my books while listening to classical music. It is a great motivator!

I am a big fan of Classical KUSC, which is a free public radio station that you can listen to on the radio at 91.5, or online any time of day. They are a listener- supported station, so there are no advertisements. I believe what they do is important, so I am a sustaining member at Classical KUSC.

Of course, you can listen to classical music many other ways, including over iTunes, Pandora, or dig out some old CDs that you likely have in your music collection. Whatever you do, commit to listening to more of it today. It will enrich your life for the better. I promise!

Here are some great albums to get you introduced to classical music:

Beethoven Best-Loved Piano Sonatas This is one of my favorite albums with the famous Moonlight Sonata included. The song I mention in the video, Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-Sharp Minor "Moonlight" Op. 27 No. 2 : III presto agitato is also number 3 on this album.

Laser Light Classics Ave Maria This is such a beautiful album and every song is truly magnificent.

Joshua Bell Romance of the Violin This album is full of romantic violin classics, beautifully played by Joshua Bell.

The Essential Yo-Yo Ma Yo-Yo Ma is the world's most famous cellist and in this classic album, he plays a variety of composers, the perfect introduction to classical music.

Comment of the Week
Regarding last week's post Let's Talk About Adulting, Life on Huckleberry Hill writes:
Adult privileges and adult responsibilities used to come hand in hand. Having worked in the field of Early Childhood Education for many years, it has been my observation that this is often no longer the case. Privileges that used to be reserved for adulthood are being given at earlier and earlier ages, while responsibility in general seems to be increasingly delayed. I have also noticed a shift in the way adults speak to children about growing up. There seem to be a lot of comments about how children should enjoy their freedom while they can, etc. Rather than looking forward to becoming a grown-up, as children typically used to, they now seem to dread it and delay the inevitable acceptance of responsibility as long as possible.

I thought your comment was very astute! I will be addressing the adulting critics in Thursday's video. I hope to see you all there!

Today I would love to know... what do you think of today's popular music? How do you feel about your children singing lyrics from popular songs? What is your favorite genre of music? Who is your favorite composer? Do you play classical music? How and when? Let me know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog!
