My NEW Book

6:00 PM 0 Comments

Dear friends,

I have wonderful news: my new book The Daily Connoisseur's Guide to Living Well at Home is coming out November 18th from Hoffman Media's 83 Press.

Not only am I passionate about the subject matter of this book (living well at home is my favorite topic!) but it has been beautifully produced by Hoffman Media, the same publisher of Victoria magazine. The cover and interior illustrations are by British artist and my dear friend, Alice Tait and is a book that you will want to display in your home long after you read it.

Here is the description from the publisher.

With wisdom born of personal experience and international inspiration, Scott invites readers into a philosophy of intentional, elegant living—where homemaking becomes an art form and everyday rituals elevate the soul. From organizing clutter with bespoke systems to establishing rhythms of peace and productivity, this guide offers practical strategies and gentle encouragement for creating a life of order, beauty, and joy—right where you are.

Divided into three transformative parts—Function, Beauty, and Inspiration—this book equips readers to not only run their homes efficiently, but to infuse them with style, grace, and meaning. Learn how to implement a connoisseur’s cleaning routine, create nourishing meals with ease, and enjoy the pleasures of fine living on any budget. Whether you live in a cozy apartment or a sprawling house, her message is clear: don’t wait for your dream home to live your dream life.

Overflowing with personal stories, global insights, and journaling prompts to spark self-discovery, The Daily Connoisseur’s Guide to Living Well at Home is more than a manual—it’s a movement. This is a book for anyone who longs to turn everyday tasks into meaningful rituals, and a home into a sanctuary. Step inside and begin your journey to conscious, joyful living today.

The publication date is just around the corner but you can pre-order your copy today from Amazon, Hoffman Media, Barnes & Noble, or wherever books are sold.

It has been a complete joy working on this book from start to finish and I cannot wait for you to read it. Thank you for your longtime support of my work. I appreciate you so much! While I am not blogging here on a regular basis, I continue to make weekly videos on YouTube and look forward to seeing you there! I also invite you to subscribe to my monthly news letter (it's free!) over on my author website. I write you a letter once a month and it is delivered to your email.

With love,

Jennifer

The Chic Assignment | July 2021

6:27 AM 0 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for July, 2021. I am posting this a day early as I have another video planned for you tomorrow. I hope you enjoy!

Chic Assignment No. 1 Enjoy Gabriel Fauré's Pavane Op. 50

Gabriel Fauré was a French composer (1845-1924) and was one of the foremost French composers of his generation. As a lover of classical music, I'm not entirely sure how Gabriel Fauré's work has escaped me until now, but Pavane Op. 50 is one of the most hauntingly beautiful works of classical music I've ever heard. This month I'm sharing an actual recording of Fauré playing this piece that dates back to 1913, Paris. I truly hope you enjoy it. We will learn more about Fauré in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Explore the poetry of Rumi

Rumi was a 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic. He believed strongly in music, poetry, and dance as a way of communicating with God and his poems and famous quotes are steeped in deep wisdom. Whether or not you share Rumi's religious beliefs, his poetry can be both celebrated and enjoyed. I find his quotes to be particularly insightful. Here is a resource with some of his famous quotes. You can read his poetry online here.  The Essential Rumi is a book that contains his most important work. We will learn more about Rumi in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 3 Do a 15-minute Declutter

You would be amazed to learn how much you can accomplish in 15 minutes. I often set the timer when I'm facing a daunting task like cleaning the kitchen or folding a mound of laundry. We can apply the same 15-minute principle to our intimidating decluttering tasks. Next week as part of the on-going Mega Motivation collaboration I take part in, I am sharing my own 15-minute decluttering session. I hope it will provide inspiration for you.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Prepare your wardrobe for the new season

Summer is upon us and it's time to go through your wardrobe to determine if any changes need to be made to account for the warmer weather. I'll be retiring my long sleeved Rachel Pally dress in favor of a lighter weight short sleeve summer dress. I'll be sharing all of my updates with you this month.

Homemaking Week in the Life | THE ART OF TEA

6:04 AM 4 Comments

Welcome to a new homemaking week in the life. Today we do some gardening, celebrate another birthday, and explore the art of tea.

The Art of Tea... what does it mean to you? Certainly the art lies in the choice of tea and the treats to accompany the beverage of repose. Although for me, the art of tea is more about taking the time to enjoy the meditative qualities of that glorious afternoon ritual.

I'm reading this beautiful hardcover book The Art of Tea by Victoria Magazine in today's video. I have been feasting on this beautiful book, full of gorgeous images and delectable recipes. I adore it. What a treat.

Speaking of treats... I'm making Shelby from The Queen's Cabinet's Caramel Pecan Turtles... a very easy treat to make. You can visit The Queen's Cabinet here.

The beautiful Wedgwood teapot and tea set was a housewarming gift from my mother and father in-law. I was so delighted to receive it!

The Reward
I have some rather mundane tasks,
To complete before my repose:
Dinner to cook, and tidying to do,
And then there’s laundering the clothes,

I can get through elemental chores,
Knowing well what lies before me.
For when all my tasks are checked off my list,
It’s time for a cup of tea.

- Jennifer L. Scott

I was getting tired of making the same birthday cake over and over again. (In a family of 6, we can get tired of birthday cakes easily. Ha!) So I tried out a Texas Sheet Cake this time for our son's 2nd birthday. I can't tell you how delicious this cake is. I replaced the walnuts with pecans and found the cake to be absolutely delectable. The original recipe is from All Recipes. I am also leaving a printable recipe card down below with my adjustments for your convenience.

Texas Sheet Cake with Pecans

Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 35 Min

Ingredients:

Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
Frosting
  • 6 Tbs milk
  • 5 Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease and flour a 10 x 15 cookie sheet or jelly roll pan.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Beat in the sour cream and eggs. Set aside. Melt the butter on low in a saucepan, add the water and 5 tablespoons cocoa. Bring mixture to a boil then remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly, then stir the chocolate mixture into the flour mixture until incorporated.
  3. Pour batter into the greased and floured pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. For the frosting: In a large saucepan, combine the milk, 5 tablespoons cocoa and 1/2 cup butter. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla, then fold in the pecans, mixing until blended. Spread frosting over warm cake. (Please note: nuts may be omitted entirely or walnuts may be substituted.)

Bloopers 2017

7:14 AM 9 Comments

Losing my train of thought, babies taking down tripods, never ending background noise and little children photo bombing me... just a few things that go on behind-the-scenes on The Daily Connoisseur!

I'm sure you've noticed that I have included my children more on the channel. They are such a big part of my life and we are nearly always together so it has been challenging not including them (as you will see in today's video).

My family and I watched this bloopers video together and laughed along with it. We agreed that it was OK to put online and hope that it brings joy to your day. Working at home with children around has its challenges and I wanted you to know that I relate to your struggles. We work as a team in our house and try not to take ourselves too seriously. I hope you enjoy today's bloopers video and that it brings some much-needed laughter to your day.

Comment of the Week
Monday's Teatime with Jennifer on Narcissistic Audience Members sparked a real passion among our readers. Hundreds of people chimed in with etiquette horror stories about unthoughtful audience members.

Paperbits writes: People overall don't understand theater etiquette. Crinkling papers, cell phone screen with bright lights, loud talking, etc... Thank you for doing this video, I think it is all about exposure, the more you exposure yourself to live experiences away from social media, and just appreciate the moment the more respect you have. I think it is about oversharing as well. I find even myself at times can't enjoy the moment if i don't capture it. I tell myself it is OK to have memories not recorded every step of the way!

Dear Paperbits, I agree about appreciating the moment. In this digital age we feel we need to share everything, almost as if the experience is meaningless unless we record and share. I struggle with this too and have to consciously refrain from it. Thanks for your comment. It was one of the most liked comments on my video!

Today I would love to know... do you have children and work from home? How do you balance work and family life? Do you have any fun "bloopers" to share with us? Let me know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur!

Old Hollywood Hair

4:55 PM 5 Comments
We've arrived back in California and it feels great to be home. I am exhausted from the journey so am taking the week off of blogging... But I do have this week's video for you entitled: Old Hollywood Hair.

In the video I show you a modern take on an Old Hollywood hairstyle of the kind that you would see on Rita Hayworth and Veronica Lake. I love those starlets from the Golden Age of Hollywood- they looked presentable always and had so much style and panache! My version of Old Hollywood hair is a little more loose and casual- which keeps the look from becoming too 'costumey' and is appropriate for everyday wear.

If you are unable to see the embedded video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

And one last thing... As you know Chopin is my favorite composer- I especially love his nocturnes so I have set this video to Nocturne No. 21 in C Sharp Minor, Op. Posth performed by Aaron Dunn (although You Tube is promoting the iTunes version performed by François-René Duchâble). The music is from MusOpen who is a non-profit that provides copyright free classical music to the public.

I hope you have a wonderful week! Next week I will aim to return rested and restored...
