10:36 AM 1 Comments

Dear Friends, I am writing to you with exciting news. I am going to be Victoria magazine’s Writer-in-Residence for 2024. As writer-in-residence, I’ll be writing the opening essay for each issue in 2024. This is a tremendous honor for me. I have read and admired Victoria since the 90s! What a tremendous gift to be working with them now in this capacity. Victoria is the most beautifully curated magazine that celebrates gracious living through inspiring home décor, travel, recipes, entertaining, and more. Victoria celebrates women entrepreneurs as well. I was proud to be featured as one of their entrepreneurs of the year in 2021. I invite you to subscribe to Victoria magazine and can’t wait for you to read my essays in 2024. Thank you for your support, which is always appreciated. I also invite you to subscribe to my free author newsletter at jenniferlscott.com Enter your email in the top lefthand corner and click "subscribe". I send out one newsletter a month. This newsletter is replacing my blog during this season. Finally, I hope you will follow along with our adventures on YouTube. We have wonderful videos in store for you now and in 2024. I hope that your December is merry and bright. I look forward to everything that lies ahead.

With love,

Homemaking Week in the Life | The Business of Bliss

7:19 AM 1 Comments

Welcome to a new homemaking week in the life video. Today we are exploring the business of bliss.

If there was one standout series on my channel this year, it would be my homemaking videos. Those are my favorite to make and I know many of you enjoy watching them too. In today's video I'm cooking, cleaning, and musing on how we can make homemaking blissful... even the most dreaded tasks.

I am featured alongside 6 other amazing women entrepreneurs in Victoria Magazine's annual Business of Bliss issue. The Business of Bliss in this sense is attributed to women making a living doing what they love. This certainly applies to me, but it got me thinking about homemaking. Homemaking is the ultimate career, after all. How can we make homemaking our business of bliss? Find out in today's video.

The Secret

Reframe our minds

Retune our hearts

To enjoy

Something like this.

To find beauty in

The everyday

That is

The business of bliss.

Homemaking Week in the Life | THE ART OF TEA

6:04 AM 4 Comments

Welcome to a new homemaking week in the life. Today we do some gardening, celebrate another birthday, and explore the art of tea.

The Art of Tea... what does it mean to you? Certainly the art lies in the choice of tea and the treats to accompany the beverage of repose. Although for me, the art of tea is more about taking the time to enjoy the meditative qualities of that glorious afternoon ritual.

I'm reading this beautiful hardcover book The Art of Tea by Victoria Magazine in today's video. I have been feasting on this beautiful book, full of gorgeous images and delectable recipes. I adore it. What a treat.

Speaking of treats... I'm making Shelby from The Queen's Cabinet's Caramel Pecan Turtles... a very easy treat to make. You can visit The Queen's Cabinet here.

The beautiful Wedgwood teapot and tea set was a housewarming gift from my mother and father in-law. I was so delighted to receive it!

The Reward
I have some rather mundane tasks,
To complete before my repose:
Dinner to cook, and tidying to do,
And then there’s laundering the clothes,

I can get through elemental chores,
Knowing well what lies before me.
For when all my tasks are checked off my list,
It’s time for a cup of tea.

- Jennifer L. Scott

I was getting tired of making the same birthday cake over and over again. (In a family of 6, we can get tired of birthday cakes easily. Ha!) So I tried out a Texas Sheet Cake this time for our son's 2nd birthday. I can't tell you how delicious this cake is. I replaced the walnuts with pecans and found the cake to be absolutely delectable. The original recipe is from All Recipes. I am also leaving a printable recipe card down below with my adjustments for your convenience.

Texas Sheet Cake with Pecans

Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 35 Min

Ingredients:

Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
Frosting
  • 6 Tbs milk
  • 5 Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease and flour a 10 x 15 cookie sheet or jelly roll pan.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Beat in the sour cream and eggs. Set aside. Melt the butter on low in a saucepan, add the water and 5 tablespoons cocoa. Bring mixture to a boil then remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly, then stir the chocolate mixture into the flour mixture until incorporated.
  3. Pour batter into the greased and floured pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. For the frosting: In a large saucepan, combine the milk, 5 tablespoons cocoa and 1/2 cup butter. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla, then fold in the pecans, mixing until blended. Spread frosting over warm cake. (Please note: nuts may be omitted entirely or walnuts may be substituted.)

Flipping Through Vintage Victoria Magazine | August 1994

9:49 PM 5 Comments

I recently uncovered a treasure trove: a box of "vintage" Victoria Magazines from the mid-90s. Those of you who subscribe to Victoria will know what I'm talking about. Those issues were just pure gold for people with our Connoisseur sensibilities.

I loved flipping through Victoria Magazine as a teenager and looking at the stunning images, reading the poetry, and learning about new people and places that have all since become dear to my heart.

Uncovering these old issues brought back so many memories! I thought it would be fun to flip through an August issue from 1994, which was 25 years ago (can you believe that?). Join me for today's relaxing video as I flip through a vintage issue of Victoria. I'm seeing this one with you for the first time in 25 years.

I apologize because at some points in the video there is a glare on the page. I have learned a few things about filming the pages of a glossy magazine at night! Despite the filming issues, I thank you for joining me today and hope you enjoy the video.

Mentioned in the video: Victorian nightgowns. I love to wear these long, white Victorian nightgowns. They are my favorite gowns to wear at night.

Comment of the Week
Unknown writes, "This blog, especially your videos on homemakers biggest enemies, have revolutionized my life. Literally I have found myself a completely different person as I go about my housework each day. I no longer look for “the end result”, but I enjoy the process. I no longer dread the work and this has helped me not to procrastinate. As a result, my house is cleaner, but I am less tired. Seems strange but it’s true. Amazing! I just started reading your book, at home with madame chic. So so great. I am recommending it to everyone I know! A big thanks to you. Please keep the videos coming."

Dear Unknown,
I was thrilled to read your comment and am so glad that my books and videos have impacted you in such a positive way. Wonderful!

Thank you for joining me today. I hope you enjoyed this flip-through and I would love to hear your thoughts on this vintage Victoria Magazine.
