Today, we are discussing a very important subject: screen time and our children. How much is too much? What can they do instead? and How can we as parents help?



I discuss the subject of screen time in Connoisseur Kids and even give a list of 50 activities children can do that don't involve screens. In today's video, I give many more ideas and also discuss my philosophy regarding screen time.

Here is an interesting article I found from WebMD on the subject of screen time.

The following is an excerpt from the article:

Can Too Much Screen Time Hinder Child Development?

Young children spend a lot of time fiddling with smartphones, tapping away at tablets and staring at TV screens.

Could this time be taking away from their early physical and mental development?

A new study argues that's precisely the case -- screen time can affect how well children perform on developmental tests.

"Kids who are being put in front of screens are showing delayed development," said lead researcher Sheri Madigan. She is research chair of child development with the University of Calgary's department of psychology, in Canada.

Watching TV, using a computer, playing video games, and goofing around with tablets or smartphones were among the types of screen time reported.

"We found that, on average, children are viewing screens somewhere between two and three hours per day," Madigan said. "This exceeds the recommended guidelines of no more than one hour of high-quality programming for kids between the ages of 2 and 5" set by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).


As you can see, even doctors agree that limiting screen time is necessary for raising well-rounded children.

I firmly believe that leading by example is the most important aspect here. We as parents need to not be attached to our own screens. There should be an atmosphere in the home that does not revolve around the television and constant entertainment.

An emphasis on enjoying books and a love of learning are also critically important. I do hope you watch today's video to hear my expanded thoughts on this important subject.

I think that most of the issues that plagues us in today's society are related to anger and resentment to the "other". One way to fix that is by treating each other with dignity and respect and that's where manners and etiquette come in. Manners and etiquette empower kids and reduce anxiety because it teaches kids what to do and say in every situation. I was using the Carreño manual but is a bit outdated (written in 1865) and then my favorite YouTuber @dailyconnoisseur came out with her own book. I got it 2 days ago and I got to say is a great and fun to read manners book. Teaches the kids how to be the best person they can be: how's to talk, maintain eye contact, table manners, tidiness and more. Emily often wrote about nature and, even though she was a homebody and actually spent the majority of her latter years never leaving her family home, she loved the garden and observing nature as is evident in this poem, with its keen observations. I hope you enjoy our discussion of Emily's work in today's video.


Chic Assignment no. 3 Be mindful of (mindless) snacking. This month, I noticed the times when I did mindless snacking. I tend to mindlessly snack when I am stressed, tired (at the end of the day), or when I fail to plan properly for meals. Chapter one of Lessons from Madame Chic discusses this in more detail. I have been on a major reading slump for the last couple of months. To get out of it I knew I had to read something appealing but easy at the same time. So I decided to buy the Madame Chic trilogy by Jennifer L Scott, the youtuber behind The Daily Connoisseur channel that I have been following for some time now. And what a great choice it was. Jennifer talks about how to be a lady, how to organize your home and, basically, how to live your best life. Happy Friday! Friday just might be my favorite day of the week. I love that the week is winding down to a close and the weekend, with all its possibilities, is at hand. On today's episode of The Clueless Gardeners, we prepare our garden for spring.



Gardening is a family affair. It's very important for us to involve the children with choosing the plants and even planting them. They just love seeing our fruits and vegetables grow. They also love planting seeds and watching them sprout. There's nothing like getting your hands dirty when you are a kid!

In today's video, Ben plants my favorite rose, The Double Delight. It is the most magnificent rose to me because of its beautiful color (two-toned pink and white) as well as its amazingly sweet fragrance.

Dear Daily Connoisseurs,

Merry Christmas! Another year has passed and I can hardly believe it. When I started this blog back in 2007, I was newly married and excited to embark on the journey of blogging. I figured it would be a secret hobby and I was content that only a handful of strangers would read it.



11 years later, I can't believe I'm still here and that our little community has grown so much. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support and for your participation on the blog this year. My long-time readers have been with me through so much. And this year, welcoming our fourth child has been beyond special.

There were a few videos I wanted to put out for the holiday season, including Madame Bohemienne's flourless chocolate cake. I have been so busy with the children that I didn't get around to filming it. I apologize! But I promise to bring you the cake video in the new year.

If I were to look back at a theme for this year the word family keeps coming to mind. You've probably noticed I've included my family more and more in my videos. They are such an integral part of my life and I honestly love to look back over the years and see the little snippets where they've been included. I plan to include them more in the new year as I explore how to live well together as a family. Ultimately family relationships are the most important relationships you have, second to God. And I believe fostering quality time at home with those you love is of the utmost importance.

I'll be taking my annual Christmas break from the blog and YouTube channel. I'll be away for two weeks. I won't actually be resting because I received my next round of edits for CONNOISSEUR KIDS, which will be coming out in the fall of 2019. So I will be busy working on those. I am so excited for that book. I just know that you will love it.

Next year is bringing lots of exciting ventures. I am also working on a new eCourse that will hopefully motivate and inspire you.

The areas you encourage your children in might be different from mine depending on your life circumstance. But today, let's sit down together and come up with different ways we can encourage our children to be helps in the home.



I encourage my older daughters when they help me with the baby. (He's two now, so I guess he's a toddler, but you know how it is with the youngest. They will always be your baby, no matter how old he or she is! :) )

I encourage all of my children with the cleaning and come up with clever ways to make cleaning enticing. My son especially has an interest in helping me clean.

I like to encourage their specific skills in academics and music. These are just some examples. Today, I would love to know how you encourage your children.

Mentioned in the video: This is the wet/ dry vac that we have. It's the least expensive one on Amazon. It's not the strongest one on the market, but works for our small needs at home.

As a young adult the author traveled to France to live for a short time, and the lessons she learned there about fashion, food, home styling, self care and beauty routines changed her life forever. The most wonderful thing about this book is how simplistic it is! The tips and suggestions are simple, practical, logical, and easy to adapt for just about anyone anywhere. She makes a point of this by presenting the two families she lived with while in France and how even though the families were different (where they lived, their individual style) the principals of their approach to life is the same. This book is a great read for any age - from teens to young adults to anyone older, middle aged on up. There's no age restrictions on taking care of oneself!

This book is also - although not presented as such - actually a money and time saver, specifically the tips about what to wear and beauty routines. Even the tips about what hair cut works best for each person make a lot of sense and are ultimately a time saver.

This is the kind of book that readers will keep handy and refer to often. Sometimes I pick this book up and re-read different sections, especially if I need a style/care boost or a reminder why I should toss out those worn out sweat pants once and for all (ha ha). I highly recommend this book!"

I am so pleased today to finally announce the details on my next book, CONNOISSEUR KIDS, from Chronicle Books.

CONNOISSEUR KIDS is a book on etiquette, manners and living well for little ones! It is an interactive book for the whole family, encouraging family togetherness and bonding over etiquette, manners and tidiness lessons.

All parents want to raise well-mannered children. They are a joy to be around! This book will be a game-changer in the etiquette genre because it encourages the child to not only think about how they can live well through etiquette, but also why it's important and how it will help them in their daily lives.

CONNOISSEUR KIDS will be released in the fall of 2019. As I write the book, I would love to hear from you! Please leave me your suggestions. What areas do you and your children struggle with?
