8:22 AM 2 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for April, 2021. We will dive into the realms of opera, French Impressionism, and much more.

Thank you to The Chic Society for bringing us The Chic Assignment. The Chic Society is the private membership group on YouTube. Membership is only $1.99 a month. I release a "vodcast" (a video podcast) every Friday and we go live (either on YouTube or Zoom) once a month. There are also two upper tiers who receive recognition in The Chic Assignment check-in.

Chic Assignment no. 1 Enjoy the music of Puccini

This month we are listening to O Mio Babbino Caro from Puccini's opera, Gianni Schicchi. I found this exquisite violin performance from Caroline Adomeit as well as this beautiful operatic performance by Montserrat Caballé.

Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the artwork of Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was a French Impressionist painter who lived from 1841 to 1895 in Paris. She is known for her elegant works full of feminine charm. Check out a gallery of some of her most famous works on Google Arts and Culture. We will learn about Berthe Morisot in the mid-month check-in.

This portrait of Berthe Morisot was painted by Édouard Manet in 1872 and resides at the Musée D'Orsay in Paris.
Chic Assignment no. 3 Discover a new vegetarian dish to make for dinner this month. Tomorrow, I have a long overdue What’s for Dinner featuring meatless meals. You won’t want to miss it and you won’t believe who I’m collaborating with.

Chic Assignment no. 4 Immerse yourself into spring cleaning. Likely you’ve already begun, but this month I will have some exciting ASMR spring cleaning motivation to keep you on track with your cleaning.

As always, we are going to continue reading and recommending good books. This month, I am reading Dress Codes: How the Laws of Fashion Made History by Richard Thompson Ford. I will be interviewing the author on the channel this month so stay tuned for that.

7:23 AM 1 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for March...

📍Please note: I am currently in the process of having my blog not only redesigned, but moved to Wordpress. Please be patient during the process as the blog might be temporarily disabled over the course of this month. You can always stay au courant with me over on YouTube to never miss a video. I'm excited to work on the blog and make it a better experience for you, dear reader! Also, because the blog is under construction, I am currently unable to post replies to your comments. I apologize for this inconvenience, but all will be restored soon. Thank you to everyone who has left a comment! I appreciate you.

The Chic Assignment is brought to us by The Chic Society: Become a member of The Daily Connoisseur to get exclusive monthly live streams, access to my weekly members-only Vodcast, and more. Only $1.99 a month (upper tiers are also available).

Chic Assignment no. 1 Clara Schumann

Clara Schumann Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 7 - 1. Allegro maestoso performed by Isata Kanneh-Mason

Many people know her husband, composer Robert Schumann, but did you know that his wife, Clara was an incredible composer in her own right? This month we will enjoy this performance by Isata Kanneh-Mason (Sheku Kanneh-Mason's sister) as she performs Clara Schumann's piano concerto in A minor, Op. 7 - 1. We will learn more about Clara Schumann in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the poetry of Christina Rossetti Christina Georgina Rossetti was an English poet who wrote romantic, devotional, and children's poems. She lived from 1830 to 1894. My favorite poem of hers is Amor Mundi, which means love of the world, or love of worldly things. We are going to learn more about Christina Rossetti in the mid-month check-in. In the meantime, check out these books:

Christina Rossetti Complete Poems

Rossetti (library pocket series)

Chic Assignment no. 3 Work on the seasonal transition of your wardrobe

If you are dealing with snow still, it might seem like the season will never transition, but it will eventually and now is the time to start planning your spring wardrobe (autumn for our Southern Hemisphere friends). What will stay and what will go? Keep a list of wardrobe items you'd like to purchase and start doing some research. I will be sharing my seasonal transitions for the ten-item wardrobe for you later in the month to provide you with inspiration.

Chic Assignment no. 4 Declutter and organize one cabinet that's been driving you nuts The reason I'm posting this one day early is because tomorrow, March 1st, I'm participating in another amazing YouTube collaboration called, Mega March Motivation. I'll be doing a whole house declutter and that should hopefully provide you with the motivation you need to declutter your own home.

The Chic Assignment, November 2020

6:08 AM 6 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for November, 2020.  The Chic Assignment explores music, artists, and poets, as well as encourages us to elevate our everyday lives through a fun monthly challenge.

Chic Assignment no. 1 Enjoy the music of William Grant Still (1895 - 1978) Serenade for Orchestra

William Grant Still was an American composer and conductor. He was the first African American conductor to conduct a symphony orchestra in the United States.

I have a wonderful performance from The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra of Still's Serenade for Orchestra. This is truly a delightful performance!

Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806 - 1861)

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet of the Victorian era. She was one of Emily Dickinson's favorite poets. A framed portrait of Barrett Browning hung in the bedroom of Dickinson, whose life had been transfigured by the poetry of “that Foreign Lady.” (from Wikipedia). We are reading, A Flower in a Letter, today. I encourage you to read more of her poetry this month. Check out the resources I have below. We will learn more about Barrett Browning in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment no. 3 Explore the art of the seasonal table setting

With Thanksgiving upon us, let us refine the art of the seasonal table setting. Choose something unique to place on your table this year, whether it is a seasonal bouquet, cloth napkins, placemats or other special touches. Use what you already have to make your meals special.

Chic Assignment no. 4 Prepare for gift-giving season
The holidays are upon us. Let's do all we can to prepare in advance so we can slow down and enjoy the month of December. Make lists, order gifts, wrap presents, and get prepared for a jolly gift-giving season. My holiday gift guide will be going up this month and I'm looking forward to all of the Christmas videos I'm planning on the channel. This was a hard year for everyone, but let's make it special closing it out.

I hope you enjoy this month's assignment. Let us know your observations in the comments and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week.

Chic Assignment no. 1 The Phantom of the Opera We are trying something a little different for this month's Chic Assignment and are going to listen to Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. I have provided a 1988 Tony Award performance from the great Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman that is so riveting and nostalgic. I know during this pandemic shut-down I have missed going to the theatre and I look forward to returning one day. This month we will listen to this piece and will discuss the story behind The Phantom of the Opera.  Have you seen The Phantom of the Opera? Let us know your experience down below.

Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the art of Gustave Caillebotte
We are going to study French artist, Gustave Caillebotte this month. You can see his most famous paintings for free online. We will study him more in the mid-month check-in.
