The Time-Saving Shortcut I use for Dealing with Paper Clutter + Our Command Center

10:48 AM 6 Comments

Dealing with paper is one of my least favorite things to do. You wouldn't expect that a writer would hate paper so much, but I do! I find it overwhelming. It is one of my weak points. I never know what to get rid of and what to keep. I fear that I'll need something in the future. I dislike the amount of time it takes me to file things away properly. I always get behind. You get the picture.

This video is part of The Minimal Mom's Clutter-free January. Watch this playlist to find out how many other YouTube creators deal with paper clutter in their homes. (Playlist coming soon.)

Over the years I have devised an unconventional way to deal with paper that has worked for me... so far. I'm not saying this is the best system. But this system is great for someone like me who really detests paper clutter. It's also practical. So here it is...

With regard to paper clutter, the first thing you need to do is minimize it. So I opt for paperless services as much as I can. These days you can pretty much take care of all of your bills online and do not need paper. This is one of the major pros of digital technology. I pay nearly all of my bills online. Some companies still send me a paper statement. If I took some time I could eradicate those as well... I'll get to that one day.

So going paperless is step one. Step two is: file only the important papers. We do have an alphabetical filing system. And I used to spend so much time meticulously filing everything away only to find the system stuffed to the brim at the end of the year and having to declutter my files. (Now, decluttering files is really an arduous task.) Now, I only file away the *really* important documents. Documents like Property Tax records, important medical information, important insurance documents, etc.

Where does a piece of paper go if it's not deemed "really important"? Here is where you might break away from me... but I'm going to be honest and tell you what I do. I keep the documents in a box labeled with the year. Sometimes, if I don't have much paper, I will combine years. I figure that if I ever need those documents (and so far... I never have), I can take the time to sort through the paperwork in the box to supply what I need. This has been so freeing. So freeing. I no longer feel the need to alphabetically file every single paper that I decide to keep.

What do I do with the papers that I know I don't want to keep? I get rid of them right away and don't think twice about it. When we check the mail, I immediately sort through the envelopes and catalogues and immediately get rid of what I don't want by shredding or recycling it. Important documents or letters, I will place in my command center file. I used to place these in the kitchen, but as I mentioned in my kitchen decluttering video, that created an unsightly jumble of paper clutter on my countertops which I disliked. So I keep the few letters in the command center and then go through them about once a week to pay the bills or respond in a timely manner.

The command center I'm using here is from 1 Thrive Use code Daily10 for 10% off. The type I'm using is called The Taylor. I can't tell you how much I love this wall organizer. Please let me know if you'd like me to go over the wall organizer in a separate video. I use it for so much and truly find it valuable. I hope you enjoy hearing about my paper clutter organization in today's video.

Lottie M. writes, "Dressing for the winter months while living in a warm climate can be tricky. Specifically when it’s cool in the morning and 80* in the afternoon."

Hi Lottie, I completely understand that struggle. That's why I like to dress in layers so that I can remove them as the day warms up. It tends to be colder here in the morning and warmer in the afternoon. I'll often wear leggings or stockings along with sweaters or cardigans to stay warm at home.

I hope you enjoyed today's video. I would love to know how you deal with paper clutter in your household. Please share your tips with us.

Ten-Item Capsule Wardrobe Closet Tour | Winter 2021

6:50 AM 3 Comments

As part of A Clutter-Free January, The Minimal Mom and many other wonderful YouTubers are joining together to encourage you to declutter in 2021. This week we are discussing clothing clutter. On the playlist, you will get lots of advice on how to properly declutter your closets. I have hundreds of articles on this very subject in my ten-item wardrobe posts, and also have my Madame Chic books and my TEDx talk which explain this thoroughly.

I thought rather than reiterating my decluttering advice, I'd share what my ten-item wardrobe actually looks like. In today's video I share absolutely everything (including what's behind the curtain!)

I have gathered all of my closet storage and organization solutions like padded hangers, canvas bins, drawer organizers, and more on my Amazon shop.

Here are a few tips on how I like to style and organize my closet.

I enjoy using velvet and padded hangers for my clothes. Avoid using those wire hangers from the dry cleaners as they can misshape your clothing over time and don't look as uniform. Space bags and canvas bins are great ways to store out-of-season clothes if you don't have enough drawer space. I used to store clothing in space bags under my bed when we had limited closet space.

If you do not have much closet space at all (I have been there!) and you must store your out-of-season clothing next to your current core items, simply shift them down together so you can focus on the core items for the current season. You want to avoid closet confusion when you open your closet and get dressed each morning. You want the decision to be easy each morning so you can look presentable always with no effort.

The ten-item wardrobe should be a system that is enjoyable and works for you. It should not be a strict and harsh punishment with all counting and no joy. If you have a well-curated ten-item wardrobe with extras that compliment, you can enjoy opening a closet door and having joy when choosing your clothing and you can be ready and well-dressed for any occasion! I hope today's video gave you an idea of how a fluid ten-item capsule wardrobe could work for you.

9 Kid-friendly Dinner Ideas | What's for Dinner? Winter 2021

5:57 AM 0 Comments

Welcome to a new episode of What's for Dinner? I have been filming these recipes since early November. Any time I make a recipe that is worth sharing, I filmed it to share with you in this compilation video. The emphasis for these recipes are kid-friendly meals.

There is a wide variety here... cheeseburger cups, taco soup, beef pot pie, and more. While not very sophisticated, these recipes are ones that our children enjoy eating. Sometimes dinnertime just calls for a "crowd pleaser". I hope you find these recipes useful. I would love to know what kid-friendly recipes you like to make in your household. Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

Paprika Chicken Drumsticks with spaghetti squash and cheesy rice

This is one of my children's favorite recipes. They love chicken drumsticks! I drizzle the drumsticks with olive oil, and sprinkle on paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. I don't usually measure the seasonings, but you could do 1 Tbs paprika and 1 teaspoon each of garlic and onion powder to be conservative. (Although I probably put about a tablespoon of each. ha!) As for salt, just use a dusting. I bake the drumsticks at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked through.

I served this with spaghetti squash. Slice the spaghetti squash in half and take out the seeds. Place the squash cut side down on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. I baked mine for about 50 minutes. Once it is finished, take it out of the oven and allow to cool slightly. I then scoop out the squash and finish it off in a skillet with some melted butter, salt, pepper, and parsley flakes.

These cheeseburger cups were fun to make and the children loved them! I ate mine with a knife and fork because this was messy to eat. I got the recipe from Delish

When I make soup, I usually place whatever related ingredients I have on hand into the pot, which is what I did today. I used the rotisserie chicken here and it made the soup so easy to assemble. I also used carrots, celery, olives, corn, and cilantro, along with several cups of chicken broth. I like to serve this topped with cheddar cheese over tortilla chips and serve extra chips on the side with fresh guacamole. I seasoned the soup with 1 Tbs ranch seasoning and 1 Tbs taco seasoning.

Tater Tot Casserole

I know this doesn't look very appealing, but having an easy Tater Tot casserole recipe in your arsenal is a great idea if you want to have happy kids at the table. Mine like to eat this with ketchup. Ben and I don't mind it either. This freezes very well too.

Tater Tot Casserole

Tater Tot Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbs oil
  • 1 lb ground turkey (or ground beef)
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbs ketchup
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 cups peas and chopped carrots
  • 1 bag of tater tots

Instructions

  1. Place oil in a medium skillet and brown the meat and chopped onion. Drain the fat. In a casserole dish, mix the meat and onion mixture with a can of cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and veggies. Place frozen tater tots on top of the meat mixture and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F.

I love serving beef tips with mushrooms and have shared a freezer meal before on my channel. I did a different variation in today's video, and I am leaving the printable recipe card here.

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff

Ingredients

  • 1 1b beef stew meat
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 Tbs minced garlic
  • 1 10 oz can French Onion Soup
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 1/2 cup mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in the slow cooker, except for the sour cream and parmesan cheese. Cook on low for 8 hours, or high for 3 to 4 hours. In the last half hour of cooking, add sour cream and parmesan cheese. Serve over rice or egg noodles. Top with extra parmesan cheese.

I wanted to share this meal with you as I make it often: fish, with veg and potato. In this case, we fried the cod by dipping it salted flour, then beaten egg, and finally in bread crumbs. You can use just flour if you like and that turns out fine too. We change it up regularly. The veggies are sautéed in oil and topped with parmesan cheese. I made baked potatoes and sliced them into long strips, drizzled melted butter on top and season with season all. My kids love their potatoes this way.

I occasionally like to make a home version of the Chipotle Burrito bowl. I use whatever I have on hand. This time I used rice, pinto beans, rotisserie chicken, cooked spinach, salsa, guacamole, and chopped red onion. So delicious...

Slow Cooker Beef Pot Pie

Slow Cooker Beef Pot Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 to 2 lbs beef stew meat
  • 1 10z can beef consommé
  • 1 10z can roasted garlic cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 3 to 4 cloves of crushed garlic
  • 1 package dry onion soup mix
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups peas and carrots (or similar mix)
  • 1 pie crust

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients, except the pie crust, into a slow cooker and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours. Place the beef filling into a casserole dish that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Roll out a pie crust and place on top. Create a few slits in the crust and brush egg wash on top. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven until the pie crust is golden, around 25 minutes. Served with parsley flakes on top.
  2. Feel free to make substitutions. A can of French Onion Soup can be substituted for the beef consommé, for example. The mushroom soup can be replaced with golden mushroom soup or regular cream of mushroom soup, if desired.

Heather B. writes, "I find to, when my kitchen is clean and organized, I am much more enthusiastic about cooking. I love to cook, but when things get out of hand in the kitchen, I don't want to even go in there, much less cook. I have to make 3 meals, everyday, forever, lol, so an organized kitchen is a must. This was great Jennifer, thank you!"
