Can a Tract Home Be Chic? + Living Room Budget Makeover

5:20 AM 7 Comments

Can a tract home be chic? That's the question I'm exploring in today's video.

Tract housing is a type of housing development in which multiple similar homes are built on a tract of land that is subdivided into individual small lots.

There are many pros and cons to living in a tract home. Let's examine those before we discuss decorating strategies.

The benefits to living in a tract home is that they usually are set up with modern conveniences. Many of them contain ample storage and dedicated laundry, pantry and linen rooms. The tract home is designed for the modern family and that is a wonderful aspect to focus on if you feel frustrated with your space. Other benefits to tract housing are the large rooms, ample space, and open floor plan. The fixtures are generally generic and easy to replace. You also feel a sense of community as you are close to your neighbors.

The cons of living in a tract home largely revolve around style for me. They tend to have no originality, interiors tend to be bland and generic, without any special architectural details. Many other houses look exactly like yours. They can also be awkward to decorate and require more creativity in dressing the space.

In order to customize the space, get original with how you decorate. Avoid decorating your entire home from the large chain decorating stores. Seek out unusual antiques, thrift store finds, and special, custom touches that only you have. This will help give your home that special, original quality that it lacks. Use paint, wallpaper, paintings, plants, throw pillows, and unique furniture to express your style. Don't forget to focus on ambiance through music, books, and scent.

Many of our paintings are antiques purchased off of eBay. Here is a link to some of the eBay stores we have purchased from in the past. You can find amazing artwork on eBay for excellent prices.
Cathedral Fine Art, Delphifineart, Unusualfindscompanyinc , Jose Trujillo, and blue and white porcelain on eBay

I recently rearranged the artwork in our living room, creating a gallery wall. We also added a budget rug (from IKEA) and a tropical plant to make the space more exotic and inviting. This entire decorating project was accomplished for under $150. Yes, I utilized a big box chain store like IKEA to decorate, but you'll see that those pieces are mixed with our own antique paintings, and custom sofas, etc. to create a look that is truly our own.

Many of you have seen our kitchen renovation video. We went from our very dark and dated kitchen to a beautiful, blue and white airy space. I adore our custom kitchen that we did on a budget and appreciate it every day. It's custom touches like this that make our tract home stand out.

Comment of the Week
Nancy writes, "Hi Jennifer,
One of your comments about studying dress caught my attention and reminded me of a book I enjoy, "The Lost Art of Dress" by Linda Przybyszewski (copyright 2014) and would like to highly recommend it. It is a book which focuses on dress during the first half of the twentieth century, an interesting and enjoyable book! I have loaned this book out on numerous occasions with positive responses.
I can't help but wonder did you recommend this book years ago on one of your earlier videos ?
Loved your video, as always.
Sincerely,
Nancy"

Hi Nancy, yes! I actually wrote the blurb for the cover of The Lost Art of Dress. It's an excellent book and I did recommend it back when it was published. Thank you for commenting!

I would love to know... do you live in a tract home? What do you struggle with decorating-wise? What tips do you have for us? For those of you who live in original homes, what advice would you like to share? Let us know in the comments and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

3 Articles on Dress | Vintage House Dresses, Visible Underwear? + Joan Collins Says Jeans are "Tragic"

5:08 AM 16 Comments

Welcome to 3 more articles on the subject of dress. Today we are looking at vintage house dresses, visible underwear making a comeback (!), and Joan Collins' thoughts on jeans and t-shirts as "tragic".

As always, the subjects are varied and interesting. I always look forward to your comments so please chime in with your observations below.

🌹 Let's look at the first article, which was sent to me by KA Leuis: The Outfit That Has Fallen by the Wayside: The History of the House Dress.

I shared this article on my facebook page and so many Connoisseurs chimed in on the lost practice of wearing a house dress. I'd love to discuss this topic more and even explore wearing one in my home... stay tuned for that.

🌹 This article is both shocking and not surprising, discussing how visible underwear is making a comeback. I think you can guess where I stand on this issue! The most disturbing thing about this article is that it was originally featured in Teen Vogue. Why is a magazine geared toward teenagers promoting this kind of dress? This is why I do the videos I do, to counteract the inappropriate popular culture that is inundating our society. This article was sent to me by Tessa Meyers.

🌹 Finally, this article was sent to me by Ashley: Joan Collins Says Wearing Jeans and T-Shirts Is Tragic.

Joan Collins says, "I really hope that people will spend more money on clothes, because nobody dresses up anymore," Collins told Vogue. "If you do, then people stare at you, or make cutting remarks… Well, maybe not cutting, but they’ll say something like, ‘Oh, look at you! You're all dressed up.’ I find that very sad, because it will be the end of women buying elegant clothes in stores. Everybody’s going to end up in jeans and T-shirts, which I think is tragic.”

I suppose this is how I feel about wearing gym clothes every day. My grandmother, Lila, never wore jeans a day in her life. Perhaps this is a generational thing? Were jeans the yoga pants of prior generations? What do you think?

At Home with Madame Chic in Vietnam

View this post on Instagram

YouTube News: Channel Memberships & New Regulations

5:18 AM 1 Comments

I'm coming to you with YouTube news and an announcement in today's video.

New YouTube Regulations

You might have heard about all of the changes going on with YouTube. Many channels that are created for children are going to see major changes according to the new COPPA laws. Also, as of December 10th, YouTube has the right to terminate any channels that are not commercially viable.

My content is not directed toward children, so I believe The Daily Connoisseur is safe from all of the COPPA regulations, but the second article I share above states that channels under 100,000 subscribers are not considered commercially viable by YouTube and can potentially be terminated.

We are currently at 70,000 subscribers (which is so amazing!), but sadly we are still at risk of being deleted.

Thankfully I have this blog and if anything happens to my channel, I can remain in communication with you here. I just wanted to inform you of this potential circumstance in the event that it happens.

Channel Memberships
The second announcement is a much happier one. YouTube has enabled the Memberships tab for certain content creators. Memberships is similar to Patreon, but you stay on the YouTube platform. It's for people who would like to support their favorite creators and get perks and benefits as well.

My Membership currently has three tiers: The Classic Connoisseur, The Chic Connoisseur, and The Elegant Connoisseur.

👑 Classic Connoisseurs will get one livestream a month as well as bonus videos (these will be introspective videos).

👑 Chic Connoisseurs will get everything from the previous tier, and also get their name in the credits of one popular video a month + all future eCourses for free.

👑 Elegant Connoisseurs will get everything in the previous tiers, plus seasonal mail from me + their picture or business logo in the credits of one popular video a month, plus a "shout-out". This is also a great way to get exposure for your business, or channel.

The lowest tier is only $1.99 a month and they go up from there. You can cancel at any time.

All members get custom badges next to their names in the comment section and I even had custom Marie Antoinette emojis made for our livestream chats.

Nothing will change on my main YouTube channel... everything will remain the same. The Memberships Tab is for super fans and people who would like more introspective content.

You can learn more about Memberships by clicking here or by clicking the JOIN button next to the subscribe button on my YouTube channel.

Whether you join memberships or not, I appreciate your support of my channel. Your contribution makes this community beautiful!

I'll see you on Thursday for a brand new 3 Articles on Dress. See you then!

The Chic Assignment | December 2019

5:37 AM 0 Comments

To all of my American readers, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I truly enjoyed my time off. We had family in town and it was wonderful to take a break and just be really present and enjoy their company.

What an amazing year this has been! The Chic Assignment has been an enjoyable addition to each month. The final assignment of the year is going to look a little different. My hope for you this month is that you remain present and enjoy your time with your family and friends. I know that we all have so many commitments and it can get stressful, so I do not want to add to that stress. Let's jump right in to this month's assignment, which is designed to bring joy.

🎄 Chic Assignment no. 1 Enjoy Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite Op 71a. You knew we had to enjoy Tchaikovsky this month. The Nutcracker ballet is one of my favorites and the music is amazing in its own right. At least once this month have this enchantingly beautiful music playing in the background to accompany your day.

I am listing a YouTube video that you can watch for free that has the Nutcracker Suite, Op 71a

The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance. The Nutcracker Suite should not be mistaken for the complete ballet. The outline below represents the selection and sequence of the Nutcracker Suite culled by the composer in the YouTube video I am featuring here.

I. Miniature Overture 0:00
II. Danses caractéristiques
--a. Marche 3:29
--b. Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy 5:59
--c. Russian Dance (Trepak) 7:47
--d. Arabian Dance 8:58
--e. Chinese Dance 12:04
--f. Reed-Flutes 13:05
III. Waltz of the Flowers 15:15

During The Chic Assignment check-in, I will share Tchaikovsky's biography with you. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy listening to The Nutcracker Suite or seeing the ballet in person.

🎄 Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens... an absolute Christmas classic. This month we are reading an excerpt from this famous tale. I will begin the excerpt and in The Chic Assignment check-in, Ben will read the second half. You can leave it there and simply enjoy the readings, or you can read A Christmas Carol for yourself, or watch one of the films made based on the story. Here is a link to A Christmas Carol on Amazon.

🎄Chic Assignment no. 3 Remain present The next two Chic Assignments are quite simple. During this bustling and hectic time of year we can get overwhelmed. I just want you to remain as present as possible and enjoy the season. Perhaps cut back on social media during this time, for example. Be very present with your family and friends while you are with them and enjoy their company.

🎄 Chic Assignment no. 4 Don't stress over the small things If you are hosting over the holidays, but tend to stress out over the house, food, and everything else. Be aware of your stress levels and don't sweat the small stuff. Often the things we get stressed about are the details that only we notice anyway. Prioritize enjoying the season over having everything perfect.

I am looking forward to all that December has to bring!
