Comment of the Week
Kym M. writes, "As eclectic Charlotte Mason homeschoolers we have been doing a sort of chic assignment for years. We have a poet, artist, and composer of the month. We study a Shakespeare play each quarter and we read a lot of classics."

Kym, I love this! We do something similar. And parents do not have to homeschool to do this with their children... they can enjoy this type of enrichment any time with their family... that's the wonderful thing.

Thank you for joining me for this outfits of the week edition. I hope you have a happy new year celebration! Let me know how your Christmas was in the comments below.

The Chic Assignment Season Finale from England

5:00 AM 4 Comments

Welcome to the season finale for The Chic Assignment. What an enjoyable ride it has been as we have immersed ourselves in beautiful arts and culture and bettered our everyday lives through meaningful habits. I would like to thank you for joining us this year.

The Chic Assignment will take a break in January, but we plan to resume in February. If you have any requests for future assignments, please leave them in the comments below.

Our family has safely arrived in England and today's check-in is very special, as you will see glimpses of the English countryside and festive visuals from this time of year.

Tchaikovsky, Dickens, the present moment, and stress management. These were the themes for December.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite Op. 71a is always a welcome treat to listen to this time of year. I've even been known to play it in the month of July to feel Christmas nostalgia. Does anyone else do this too? We will explore Tchaikovsky's biography in a future Chic Assignment. This episode focuses largely on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which is read beautifully by Ben.

Looking at the portraits of the Tudors at Hampton Court Palace, made me further ponder how short life can be. It's important to remain present with our family so that we don't miss the specialness of the season.

I was able to practice "not stressing the small stuff", which was Chic Assignment number 4, on the plane ride over. It's not easy taking a long-haul flight with four kids (including a baby and toddler!) So not stressing the small stuff was a must for me. I have to say that in order to get through the flight I had to also remain very present and accepting of the circumstances. Lots of prayer was happening too :)

Thank you for joining me for a wonderful year of Chic Assignments. What an enjoyable treat it has been to do this with you each month. As mentioned, I will take January off for the Chic Assignment, and it will resume in February, 2020.

What's in the Day as a Homemaker? | A Homemaker's Solitude

5:00 AM 5 Comments

What's in a day as a homemaker? How does a homemaker deal with the isolation that comes with the territory? These are the concepts I'm exploring in today's video.

What’s in the day as a homemaker?

The outside world looks in at a homemaker and wonders what on earth they do all day long. They envision endless hours of daytime television, folding laundry, and occasionally thawing a chicken from the freezer.

Well you know this, my fellow homemaker, they’ve got it completely wrong.

The Life of a Homemaker is deep and complex. There really is no other work like it in the world. Shakespeare’s Juliet asks, “What’s in a name?”

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Let us as homemaker’s ask “What’s in a day?”

The day could hold any number of quotidian tasks: making beds, ironing, cleaning, cooking, correspondence, teaching, parenting. Each of these things in and of themselves seems pretty straight forward. What’s the big deal? Some of the smaller tasks like making beds and cooking don’t seem so important. Aren’t there better things to do?

Well no, frankly, not really. I suppose it doesn’t matter who does these things, as long as they get done. So yes, as homemakers, we aren’t the only ones to do these tasks, our family does them too. But whatever tasks that are attributed to you, no matter how mundane, please know their importance. They may seem small. They may seem insignificant. But when placed together with the collective work you do all day long, they are deeply significant.

Some homemakers struggle with the isolation of being at home. If you’re an introverted homemaker like I am, you actually enjoy it. If you struggle with this, think of your isolation through a different lens.

Let’s look at how Henry David Thoreau made isolation work for him. He moved to Walden Pond to learn to live deliberately. To live a purposeful life. Notice he did not want to be around others during this time.

Oh, my fellow homemakers, make your solitude in this endeavor work for you. Can we live deliberately, like Thoreau, through making the beds, cooking the meals, ironing the clothes?

We can enrich our minds through this process as well. Through listening to books, taking the much-needed rest, and filling our minds with beautiful things.

So the next time someone asks you, “What’s in the day as a homemaker?” You will look at them with a twinkle in your eye. You could say, “Living deliberately, carving out my purpose, and making our life at home a magical escape from the outside world.” Or you could just smile and say, “You’d be surprised.”

Comment of the Week
Kerri-Mae Ashley writes, "Where have you been all my life?! Lol I got so emotional towards the end of the video for a number of reasons - conviction, hope, joy and excitement! I recently became a SHAM (1 year ago). It was a goal that we patiently waited for ten years and I said I would not be a yoga pants and t-shirt mom and what am I today? A yoga pants and t-shirt mom. I used to get dressed everyday and now only to go out to go out the house. I hurt myself hiking and couldn’t work out so I gained weight over the past few months. I felt like I didn’t deserve to get dressed everyday like I used to because I didn’t feel and look the same in my clothes. The self pity and shame is over. Thank you so much for this beautiful video - it has inspired a changed back to my true self. You are such a blessing...xoxo"

Ten-Item Wardrobe Winter Updates + Packing For England

5:00 AM 7 Comments

I'm sharing ten-item winter wardrobe updates in today's video as well as packing for an upcoming trip to England. I'm trying to pack minimally while still preparing for the extreme change in weather.

As we move into another change in season it's time to retire clothing from the prior season and make plans for what's new. For winter, I am retiring the Everlane Japanese picnic dress and the Target Wild Fable dress. These dresses performed really well this past season. I am retiring them due to their fall colors. I will pack them away and look forward to bringing them back next fall.

I have retired two core items and am bringing one back in. I have decided to bring back the LL Bean dot dress as it is very versatile, a dark winter color, and easy to layer for the colder months. Even though this is not the most exciting change, I do feel happy and comfortable with this returning piece. As you do the ten-item wardrobe, you will become content with less.

Now let's talk about packing for England. For a 3 week trip I have decided to bring only five core items: one pair of dark denim jeans (JLS10 for 10% off) and four dresses (LL Bean dress, midnight floral dress (linking similar), Velvet plaid dress, and J.Jill charcoal wrap dress).

These are the extras I am bringing... remember extras compliment your core items:
Two cashmere sweaters (Mott & Bow red cashmere code JLS10 gives 10% off and Everlane camel v-neck cashmere), 3 pairs of pajamas, including the Leimere cashmere pajama , Mersea travel wrap (for the plane), and fleece tights. I am also bringing a faux fur infinity scarf (linking similar here). I would have loved to bring my SKYE Coraline trench (Jennifer20 for 20% off ) because it goes with all of my outfits, but it is too lightweight for the heavy winter weather in England. I will look forward to wearing that trench when I get back to California.

The dress I'm wearing in today's video is by Draper James and the earrings are by Ana Luisa (code Jennifer10 for $10 off).

Comment of the Week
Carolyn M. writes, "The most common comment that I receive if I dress nicely on a regular day is an inquiry as to whether I have returned to working outside of the home. When I mention that I am still an at home mother, I mostly get a look of confusion, like why would a woman dress up if she is a homemaker?"

Hello Carolyn, I loved your comment. Every time you answer that question you plant a seed in someone's mind about the importance of dressing well daily, regardless of what you are doing. You are bringing dignity to your home life! Thank you.

I hope you enjoyed today's ten-item wardrobe video. Share your ten-item wardrobe updates with us and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog. See you soon!

5 Reasons To NOT Wear Work Out Clothes EVERYWHERE

5:17 AM 7 Comments

Exercise clothes... where I live in California they are the outfit du jour for millions of men and women. Everyday. Everywhere. In today's video I share 5 reasons to not wear workout clothing everywhere... some of the reasons might surprise you.

Please watch today's video with an open mind. Whenever I discuss this topic, people become quite upset. This is not meant as an attack on people who like to wear yoga pants everyday. These posts are meant as an encouragement for women (and even men) who find themselves in the rut of wearing workout clothing everywhere because they don't know where to begin with regard to dressing presentably. Hopefully my observations will shine a new light on the topic.

I do believe that what we wear matters. Some might think this a superficial care, but I don't. When we show up and dress for respect, everything changes. So without further ado...

5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Wear Your Workout Clothes Everywhere

⚜️ It’s not appropriate. The definition of appropriate is: suitable or proper in the circumstances. What are the right circumstances? When you are exercising: whether at the gym, out in nature, or at home. Of course we should wear work out clothes when we are working out. Conversely, we should not wear workout clothing when it is not appropriate. A few examples would be: to your child's performances, graduation, the theatre, nice restaurants, to court, to interviews (this list could go on, and on, and on...)

⚜️ Wearing exercise clothing everywhere does not convey respect. We dress to convey respect, whether you believe we do or not. When we dress in gym clothes for certain occasions, we are expressing a lack of respect. This is one of the reasons why dress codes are implemented, to maintain an air of decorum and respect.

⚜️ Wearing workout clothing everywhere is not sanitary. If you actually did work out (oftentimes people wear workout clothing when they don't actually exercise), that means you are probably sweaty... in all sorts of places. If you are unable to change after working out, consider wearing a long sweater or tunic over your workout clothing to prevent sweat and dirt from touching shared public places such as seating.

⚜️ Workout clothes when worn out-of-context contributes to the ever-increasing casualness of our society. No one has occasion to dress up anymore, and when you go to go a nice restaurant or theatre production, the atmosphere is brought down by the state of the audience.

⚜️ Workout clothing is oftentimes unflattering. I think of the funny meme that a reader sent me that read, Things that tell the truth: children, drunk people, and yoga pants. Workout clothing can tend to be tight and clingy, sometimes made of thin fabric, which is not generally a flattering look.

Comment of the Week
Cherie writes, "Funny true story: My husband and I were headed out to run errands. I was presentable except for my shirt which wasn’t bad, but I looked, well, frumpy. Sighing, I headed back to our bedroom, muttering fiercely, “She’s in my head! She’s in my head!l” while pointing to my head. My husband, bemused, asked, “Who?” I growled, “Jennifer!” He smiled and mimicked, “Be presentable always!” I kid you not, this very masculine man said that. He was very proud of me for choosing to change my top, transforming my outfit into a much more elegant, though casual, look. He knew I would feel better as I presented myself with care to my community. I did, too. And, yes, Jennifer, you are in my head. I am actually glad of that! My husband has become quite conscientious about his appearance, too. So, thank you! 💕"

Cherie, your comment made my day! I hope I'm not in people's head in an annoying way... I aim to inspire! ☺️

Can a Tract Home Be Chic? + Living Room Budget Makeover

5:20 AM 10 Comments

Can a tract home be chic? That's the question I'm exploring in today's video.

Tract housing is a type of housing development in which multiple similar homes are built on a tract of land that is subdivided into individual small lots.

There are many pros and cons to living in a tract home. Let's examine those before we discuss decorating strategies.

The benefits to living in a tract home is that they usually are set up with modern conveniences. Many of them contain ample storage and dedicated laundry, pantry and linen rooms. The tract home is designed for the modern family and that is a wonderful aspect to focus on if you feel frustrated with your space. Other benefits to tract housing are the large rooms, ample space, and open floor plan. The fixtures are generally generic and easy to replace. You also feel a sense of community as you are close to your neighbors.

The cons of living in a tract home largely revolve around style for me. They tend to have no originality, interiors tend to be bland and generic, without any special architectural details. Many other houses look exactly like yours. They can also be awkward to decorate and require more creativity in dressing the space.

In order to customize the space, get original with how you decorate. Avoid decorating your entire home from the large chain decorating stores. Seek out unusual antiques, thrift store finds, and special, custom touches that only you have. This will help give your home that special, original quality that it lacks. Use paint, wallpaper, paintings, plants, throw pillows, and unique furniture to express your style. Don't forget to focus on ambiance through music, books, and scent.

Many of our paintings are antiques purchased off of eBay. Here is a link to some of the eBay stores we have purchased from in the past. You can find amazing artwork on eBay for excellent prices.
Cathedral Fine Art, Delphifineart, Unusualfindscompanyinc , Jose Trujillo, and blue and white porcelain on eBay

I recently rearranged the artwork in our living room, creating a gallery wall. We also added a budget rug (from IKEA) and a tropical plant to make the space more exotic and inviting. This entire decorating project was accomplished for under $150. Yes, I utilized a big box chain store like IKEA to decorate, but you'll see that those pieces are mixed with our own antique paintings, and custom sofas, etc. to create a look that is truly our own.

Many of you have seen our kitchen renovation video. We went from our very dark and dated kitchen to a beautiful, blue and white airy space. I adore our custom kitchen that we did on a budget and appreciate it every day. It's custom touches like this that make our tract home stand out.

Featured in today's video: my blouse, pearl necklace
Use code Jennifer10 for $10 off, and Odette 18K gold pearl earrings Jennifer20 for 20% off.

I hope you enjoy today's video.

Nancy writes, "Hi Jennifer,
One of your comments about studying dress caught my attention and reminded me of a book I enjoy, "The Lost Art of Dress" by Linda Przybyszewski (copyright 2014) and would like to highly recommend it. It is a book which focuses on dress during the first half of the twentieth century, an interesting and enjoyable book! I have loaned this book out on numerous occasions with positive responses.
I can't help but wonder did you recommend this book years ago on one of your earlier videos ?
Loved your video, as always.
Sincerely,
Nancy"

Hi Nancy, yes! I actually wrote the blurb for the cover of The Lost Art of Dress. It's an excellent book and I did recommend it back when it was published. Thank you for commenting!

3 Articles on Dress | Vintage House Dresses, Visible Underwear? + Joan Collins Says Jeans are "Tragic"

5:08 AM 18 Comments

Welcome to 3 more articles on the subject of dress. Today we are looking at vintage house dresses, visible underwear making a comeback (!), and Joan Collins' thoughts on jeans and t-shirts as "tragic".

As always, the subjects are varied and interesting. I always look forward to your comments so please chime in with your observations below.

🌹 Let's look at the first article, which was sent to me by KA Leuis: The Outfit That Has Fallen by the Wayside: The History of the House Dress.

I shared this article on my facebook page and so many Connoisseurs chimed in on the lost practice of wearing a house dress. I'd love to discuss this topic more and even explore wearing one in my home... stay tuned for that.

🌹 This article is both shocking and not surprising, discussing how visible underwear is making a comeback. I think you can guess where I stand on this issue! The most disturbing thing about this article is that it was originally featured in Teen Vogue. Why is a magazine geared toward teenagers promoting this kind of dress? This is why I do the videos I do, to counteract the inappropriate popular culture that is inundating our society. This article was sent to me by Tessa Meyers.

🌹 Finally, this article was sent to me by Ashley: Joan Collins Says Wearing Jeans and T-Shirts Is Tragic.

Joan Collins says, "I really hope that people will spend more money on clothes, because nobody dresses up anymore," Collins told Vogue. "If you do, then people stare at you, or make cutting remarks… Well, maybe not cutting, but they’ll say something like, ‘Oh, look at you! You're all dressed up.’ I find that very sad, because it will be the end of women buying elegant clothes in stores. Everybody’s going to end up in jeans and T-shirts, which I think is tragic.”

I suppose this is how I feel about wearing gym clothes every day. My grandmother, Lila, never wore jeans a day in her life. Perhaps this is a generational thing? Were jeans the yoga pants of prior generations? What do you think?

Today's video is sponsored by Italo Jewelry. They have affordable, feminine, jewelry designs like these beautiful rose earrings, and the pearl with blue stone bracelet. Find more styles here and use the code, CONN20 for 20% off.

Thank you to Italo for bringing us today's video.

At Home with Madame Chic in Vietnam

View this post on Instagram
