Chic Assignment Check-in | November 2019

5:33 AM 8 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in for November.

Have you enjoyed this month's assignment? I have enjoyed reading your comments. Today's video is nice and long as we explore each topic, lingering a longer moment on Caspar David Friedrich.

Trudy M. sent me this quote and I thought it perfectly describes the mission of The Chic Assignment:

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”
― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Chic Assignment no. 1

Listening to Bach's cello suite no. 1 in G major has been a real treat this month. I find it boosts concentration and makes me feel motivated to complete my everyday tasks. How about you?

Chic Assignment no. 2

We explore the tragic biography of German romantic painter, Caspar David Friedrich. The loss of his mother and two siblings affected his life and paintings. The particular tragedy of his brother's drowning was an event that haunted Friedrich throughout his life. You can read the whole biography here.

Chic Assignment no. 3

As the weather gets colder and we move toward winter, I have been adjusting my skincare routine. The next video you see will go over my revamped routine (and I'm returning to a classic!).

I also have struggles in this area, particularly with my hands, which seem to suffer from severe dryness. If you have any tips for me, they would be greatly appreciated.

Chic Assignment no. 4

This month, I enjoyed baking with apples, including an overnight apple oatmeal recipe that was so scrumptious! I placed two cups of oatmeal and four cups of water into the slow cooker. I chopped 2 apples and mixed those in, along with a sprinkling of cinnamon, two prunes, and a drizzle of maple syrup. This is the perfect fall oatmeal.

I also enjoyed making an apple crisp and decorating my salads with seasonal fruits such as pomegranate and persimmon. Thanksgiving is also around the corner, and I plan to make my favorite pies. What do you plan to make for Thanksgiving?

The following books were sent to me by Daily Connoisseur readers who were inspired to write their own books! I am always so happy when I hear that the blog has inspired others to create as well. I have not had the chance to read these books yet, but I wanted to share them with you here:

In Pillness and in Health by Henriette Ivanans

Beach Glass: Finding New Beauty in What Survives the Storm by Linda Binley

AWESOME POSSUM POWERS: ALTRUISM by Shannon Beers

Spies, Lies, & Teacups by Elizabeth Ancona

Whose Waves These Are by Amanda Dykes

I am so overjoyed by your warm reaction to Monday's Homemaker video. Countless women told me the video brought them to tears. I am so thrilled that so many were moved by the message and by the cameos of those extraordinary women.

Ebony C. writes, "This was the most beautiful video! It really inspired a kindred spirit feeling in me, I feel a sense of community with hundreds of people from all over the world. You raise us all up Jennifer."

Thank you so much, Ebony! I felt the same way about the video.

The Chic Assignment November 2019

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for November, 2019. This month we are exploring German artists, Johann Sebastian Bach and Caspar David Friedrich. We are also looking at seasonal skincare and food, so let's jump in.

🎵 Chic Assignment no. 1: Listen to Bach Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major The Prelude is the most famous and recognizable portion of this brilliant piece, which will mesmerize and delight you all throughout the month.

Mischa Maisky plays Bach Cello Suite No.1 in G (full)

2. Allermande - 2:45
3. Courante - 7:09
4. Sarabande - 9:47

🖼 Chic Assignment no. 2: Artist in residence: Caspar David Friedrich (5 September 1774 – 7 May 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation. We are going to study his works this month. Visit this website to see a list of his complete works.

We will mainly focus on studying Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (image from Wikipedia)

You can buy a canvas reproduction of Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog here.

🛀 Chic Assignment no. 3: Adjust our seasonal skincare. If you are happy with your routine, then carry on and truly enjoy your nightly skincare ritual. If you need to make seasonal adjustments, do so and delight in them. I'm going through a skincare change myself and will be sharing that on the channel this month.

🥧 Chic Assignment no. 4: Cook (or bake) and enjoy a seasonal dish from scratch. With Thanksgiving approaching in America, this will be a very easy assignment for many. Let's delight in the autumnal recipes available to us and take part in a delightful meal. Whether you bake a pumpkin pie, or make your favorite savory stuffing, make a seasonal dish from scratch and savor not only the eating of the dish, but the preparation also.

I hope you enjoy today's video. I would love to hear your Chic Assignment updates below.

Day 24: Do not interrupt your child when he is talking. • • I love my little guy’s chats. The only thing I can’t get behind is the long winded play-by-plays of Minecraft 😆, but I try to humor him and redirect his attention. First Chapter of Connoisseur Kids already has us engaged! We are doing the eye contact assignment and it fit perfectly with today’s mom challenge. Whenever he and I are feeling a little “off” we have a read-aloud and a “night chat” before he goes to bed. Just giving him my full attention with eye contact, until he drifts to sleep, does wonders for him. I know he sometimes feels a little ignored after being the only child for over 5 years and my getting so busy with the baby. It’s good medicine for both of us. #30daymomchallenge #cultivatingmotherhood #connoisseurkids #gentleparenting #eyecontact #dailyconnoisseur #habittraining #intentionalmotherhood #motherculture

Penny writes, "Thank you for this month’s chic assignment and challenge to make sure our sleepwear is in order. Much needed and I found something that feels cozy enough for evenings at home without stifling me while I sleep. Thank you for the enjoyable video. Assignment completed for fall/winter. I might need a refresher for the spring/summer!"

Dear Penny, I'm so glad you enjoyed last month's Chic Assignment on presentable sleepwear. We will definitely revisit the subject again. I could talk about pajamas forever! :)

Thank you for joining me today. I look forward to hearing your Chic Assignment observations as the month goes on. We will explore the topics further in the mid-month check-in.
