For this special Thursday post I thought I'd give you a glimpse of some of the extras in my 10 Item Wardrobe- many of which are investment pieces. Investment pieces can mean different things to different people- it all depends on what you have in your fashion budget.
Trench coat by A.P.C.
I love this coat. It is so well constructed and will probably last forever. It's a classic French cut and goes with everything...
Black Wool coat by J. Crew
I got this for our trips to London. J. Crew gives you the option of ordering coats in various thicknesses (I believe they call it 'thinsulate') depending on how warm you need to be... this one is very warm!
Grey blazer by Banana Republic
This is not an investment piece but it just a wonderful and versatile blazer. I recently wore it with black trousers (from my 10 item wardrobe) and a white silk tank to tour a potential preschool for my daughter and felt very pulled together.
Black sweater blazer by BCBG Max Azria
I really love blazers because they can dress up any outfit- especially jeans. The gold buttons add a special touch...
Black cocktail dress by Alexander McQueen
This was a present from Mr. Connoisseur from one of the collections right before Alexander McQueen's tragic death. Here I'm wearing it to the Project Runway premiere with Romi... I'll cherish this dress forever.
Royal blue cocktail dress by Temperley
This dress has such a regal feel. I wore it to a winter wedding in London last year. The fabric is very thick and luxurious and the jeweled bow brings me joy...
Black satin peep-toe pumps by Dolce & Gabbana
These shoes are classic, sexy and will go with most of the dresses I own, making them a wise investment.
Black leather medium height heels by Ferragamo
These shoes are great for when you have a daytime event that calls for heels and you don't want to go too high, or when you might be on your feet for a long time. They are so comfortable and very well made...
Black nubuck ballet flats by London Sole
I love these shoes and wear them all the time- they are comfortable and stylish and perfect for daytime.
White leather embossed faux-snakeskin handbag by London Sole
This is a great tote for summertime and the leather gets softer and more supple with each use.
Black leather doctor's bag by Monserat de Lucca
I love this bag and have had it for almost 3 years now- I will probably retire it soon and search for a new signature bag. I've always loved the quilted Chanel handbags but they are not in my budget yet... one day!
Tortoise shell wayfarers by Zooey Deschanel for Oliver Peoples
These are my signature shades- I love them so much I wish I'd bought two pairs!
I would love to know... what are your investment pieces?

Gosh, I really don't have many. I'm not sure if all of these count as "investment" pieces. Mainly my Givenchy Nightingale bag and an Eli Tahari LBD, and possibly these, as well: Charles David stillettos,my Frye Harness boots and my pour la victoire suede booties, that's probably it.
Love this series. Comes at the perfect time since I'm cleaning out my closet and figuring out which sponge pieces to add.
That was supposed to be "spring" pieces. I should never type on an iPad while watching Glee with my daughter. Too many distractions.
These extras are fantastic. The McQueen dress is beyond fabulous, and how lucky you were to attend the premiere!
My favorite accessories are my Chanel medium flap bag (black), black suede Manolo Blahniks with a deep red suede rosette at the toes, my Repettos, Wayfarer Ray-Bans, and Burberry trench (which does, unfortunately, get dirty pretty easily).
But I think that a great hairstyle and nice skin are perhaps the most important accessories of all. You wear them even when your naked!
Wonderful, classic pieces. And Ferragamos are the only way to go if you have to stand up and look elegant at the same time:).
WOW - these wardrobe extras are 'Stunning'!!! I love the blazer from Banana R, the sweater from BCBG and every wardrobe should have a Trench!!! I love your blog and ispirations!
Renata
I love your investment pieces, particularly the trench, Temperly dress, the McQueen dress and the SHOES! :) I have a few investment pieces -- black tall Frye boots, black Tahari sheath dress, black leather purse which my cousin from France gave me 13 years ago (and still looks fabulous!), blue patterned DVF wrap dress from 2008. I want to get a good trench coat this year and a good Kate Middleton-style blazer.
That blue dress is gorgeous! Those are great investment pieces, indeed.
Beautiful "extras!"
I love this series however just to make you laugh when I first started reading about the challenge I actually started to get a panic attack. I cannot do the 10 item yet however I have scaled back and actually sold a lot of things at a consignment store. I am striving for the 10 item closet because I actually only wear probably the same items all the time. You are a true inspiration!! I also love love the idea of only buying quality over quantity.
I do have investment pieces: Fluerrette cashmere coat, LV Bag, Luchese boots, Hermes scarf!!! Now that I have those I need to concentrate on getting rid of the junk! Keep going, I'm working on the panic attacks ;)))
Thanks to your series I have been thinking and planning on paring down my wardrobe and only keeping the fabulous items (ditching the so-so items).
You look so gorgeous and glamourous in your Alexander McQueen dress, in fact everything you've shown on this post is wonderful. The Temperley dress is dreamy.
I am at the time of life where I am a woman of a certain age. How lovely that you have developed a fine eye and discerning taste as a young woman. I wish I had. You will enjoy this quality for years to come. I have some wonderful investment pieces, mostly jewelry, scarves and handbags. My DH is following along with a less is more approach to dressing. Love it.
The Temperley dress is gorgeous. I've been wanting a Trench forever (preferably Burberry). Someday!
I really enjoy this series!
My investment pieces are a small assortment of Prada kitten heel shoes, four immaculate Tod's/Prada bags I purchase at consignment stores, and some Hermes and Loro Piana scarves and stoles. I also have Burberry and Prada coats.
Investments should be made in clothing you expect to have for a minimum 10-year wearing cycle. Anything less than that is really just vanity and a waste of hard-earned money!
Thank you everyone for your comments... My investment pieces aren't much but I plan on building them up overtime and as many of you have mentioned, the best investment pieces are items that will last forever and will not go out of style. Linda H- you crack me up- no need for a panic attack! Just do what works for you- you can do it!
I loved reading about all of your investment pieces... the brands we chose and items we cherish say so much about our personalities...
Now I don't know about you but I've had a loooong week and am going to go put my feet up! Have a wonderful weekend. I am switching gears on Monday's post...
Jennifer xx
Your investment pieces are beautiful! I love this series about your 10-item wardrobe.
My investment pieces include my cognac leather Cole Haan bag (which I managed to find for a reasonable price on eBay by being patient and waiting six months to purchase it), a very pretty, very flattering light gray wool toggle coat from Anthropologie (not super expensive, but something that was a splurge for me at the time), and my Tory Burch Reva flats (another eBay purchase). I also have some Nanette Lepore skirts and dresses that I think I'll wear forever, and a Trina Turk white eyelet dress that is my go-to for summer. Oh, and my Vitamin A black bikini -- another go-to for summer and probably the best bathing suit I've ever splurged on.
I've really been enjoying this series, and this post especially! Love your black "Doctor's Bag" purse. That will be difficult to part with! Bess
Love Love Love them You have the ultimate in taste. I so love your blog!
I adore the Temperley dress! Stunning. the trench is sublime too.
