Two Days in Richmond Upon Thames

I hope you had a great 4th of July weekend! I am back in America after a short trip to England. What a wonderful time we had! Today I have a short video showing one of my favorite places in England, Richmond Upon Thames.

Check out this week's video for a mini tour. We go to the Terrace Gardens, Petersham nurseries and take a walk along the Thames. In the middle of the video you will hear a very talented violinist perform by the river. Classical music connoisseurs: can you tell us what song he is playing? (A bit of music trivia is always fun!) You can leave your answer in the comment section below or tweet or facebook me.

Madame Chic Inspiring Thought
Spend some time this week in a garden, whether it be in your back yard, the local park or on a special trip. Enjoy the beauty that surrounds you and be very present while there.

Speaking of beautifully scented roses, here are the David Austin Gertrude Jekyll roses from the garden of my mother and father in-law's house. This rose has the most incredible scent! A strong, traditional rose fragrance emminates from every bloom.

Comment of the Week

Patrish writes:

Just a quick note on aprons: they have something that most clothing for women does not--pockets! I love to listen to audio books while cleaning/cooking and the apron pockets hold my phone or ipod and earbuds so they are always within reach when I have a few minutes. I also have a small coin purse that holds a house key (ever locked yourself out while taking out the trash?), lip balm and a few dollars in case I need to tip a delivery person. I transfer the coin purse to whatever apron I'm wearing. I won't buy an apron without pockets.

Thank you Patrish! While I don't keep a coin purse in my apron, I do love to listen to podcasts or music while I work around the house and love my apron pockets for the very same reason.

Artistic Recommendation

After I read your first book - I watched the film Amelie - it was lovely. I came across another film starring Audrey Tautou - Delicacy. It is a beautiful film and Ms. Tautou is outstanding - I just wanted to recommend it to you if you haven't seen it. I love your books and am looking forward to the release of Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic.

Best wishes,

Elisabeth

Thank you Elisabeth. I am looking forward to watching Delicacy!

This week I would love to know... how are you spending your summer holidays?

Music featured in video is: Beethoven Pathetique Sonata 2nd Movement

Hi Jennifer,

What a lovely garden over there. All those plants and flowers..
I don't own a garden but I live just in a park so I can enjoy nature anyway.
This summer I'll be working a lot but I'm also going to Iceland for two weeks. Even more beautiful nature for me: geysers, waterfalls, glaciers etc. I am really looking forward to it. Hopefully I'm also able to go to London in autumn. But first things first!

Enjoy!

We are off to visit RHS Rosemoor garden in North Devon this week. We are so fortunate in having a Royal Horticultural Society show garden within our county and we're looking forward to this visit (it has a magnificent rose garden and I'm hoping that they won't be 'over' by the time we pay our visit.)
Hope you enjoyed your visit to England, Jennifer!

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for showing us the pleasures of a simple life! Would you please do a post on ladylike swimwear and fitness clothing (for the sole purpose of working out). Merci!

Richmond is my favourite part of London; if I was to ever move back there, I would buy a house by the river ...

I have spent my winter holidays (it is cold in the Southern Hemisphere) taking 57 teenage schoolgirls on a music and culture tour of Japan. I looked after the string quintet and they played Baroque suites with a double bassist from the Tokyo Philharmonic and one of the best freelance violinists in Japan; our choir sang in Suntory Hall in Tokyo and our wind band played at several high schools and universities. We also enjoyed staying in a ryokan in the mountains near Hakone and visiting temples in Kyoto. It was 'Seeking out the Arts' in overdrive! We had such a wonderful experience and the combined loveliness of the summer gardens and the green hills in the distance (it is the rainy month in Japan) made it an unforgettable trip for us all.

Now we are back in the Sydney winter, which is bright and sunny but a little bit Antarctic this week ...

Just watched the video, Jennifer ... it makes me realize just how fortunate I am to live in England with so many lovely gardens and nurseries to visit. Not been to Richmond but enjoyed a cruise on the River Thames many years ago. We are now looking forward to our visit to RHS Rosemoor - now that is a garden you would love!
What was the background music to your video ... I know it, have it on one of my hundreds of CDs and LPs, but just can't place it ... another senior moment, not doubt!

So beautiful, thank you for sharing! Hoping someone else recognizes the violinist's piece: I don't!

It was great spending time with you in the garden, even if you were across the pond! Petersham Nurseries reminds me of Roger's Gardens here in Newport Beach and the next time you have a book-signing event here in Orange County (and I hope you do!), you may enjoy a walk through this establishment.

Thank you for the tip on the David Austin Lady Emma Hamilton rose as we're going out tomorrow and were planning on looking at rose bushes, including the Mr. Lincoln and the Double Delight. So, thank you for this additional one.

Enjoy your family holiday!

I am lucky enough to live very near to Richmond and used to take my children there frequently when they were younger. It is very lovely especially in the summer.

England is beautiful, and I love your new book covers, especially the Czech one.

I love classical music and have played the violin for nearly 30 years, but I don't recognize the clip you posted! I wonder if it might be Viotti or Wieniawski or some other lesser-known composer. I'm going to be wondering all day what that piece is!

Thanks for the video, Jennifer--Richmond Upon Thames looks beautiful! I'm in the Mid-Atlantic US and am fortunate to live within a half hour of Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square, Pennsylvania). It's one of the most phenomenal gardens I've ever been to and my husband buys me a membership every year for my birthday. We visit year round--even in the winter! If you're ever in the Philadelphia area, it's definitely worth checking out.

I really enjoy visiting gardens when I'm vacationing as well. Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle Beach is quite an experience. In addition to gardens, they have a zoo, a river tour of the property and art exhibits. What more could you want? And the garden is filled with sculptures......absolutely lovely. I've also done a self-guided garden tour in Charlotte, SC which involved seeking out several cemeteries and old church yards. It sounds kind of spooky, I know, but the juxtaposition of the headstones and the flora was quite striking.

Hi Jennifer,
I would love to see a blog post about educating oneself and staying on top of current events, even if they are unpleasant. I wish I could say that I am smelling the roses, but the truth is, given the actions of our California state legislators and governor, I am now spending my summer feeling outraged that they are playing havoc with our human rights and civil rights. They have authored and signed Senate bill 277 into law; our state government is now trying to force what are essentially experimental vaccines into our children, with the threat of denying them their right to a public or private education. It's outrageous that they are supporting treating our children as guinea pigs, allowing them to be used for drug company profits, and taking the power of choice away from parents. There is so much fear-mongering about what are basically extinct diseases and misinformation about what are at best ineffective, at worst dangerous, vaccines. The truth is that there have been 0 measles deaths in American children in the last ten years, but there have been over 100 measles vaccine related deaths. There is evidence to suggest that the vaccines may actually be causing the outbreaks of measles and whooping cough that we see from time to time. I am not affiliated with the following, but I can recommend www.vaccineimpact.com as a great website to inform oneself about the facts. I hope you and your readers will check it out. Thank you.

Lovely video! I really enjoyed the music you played in the background as well. Can you post the information on that? Merci!

I loved looking at Richmond, as we used to live in London and I've run through the park as well as strolling by the Thames. When we go back to visit family we don't have much time to go to other places like Richmond (seeing family and friends is the priority) so it was great to have this glimpse. I'm no good at recognising music - Vivaldi came to my mind but I suspect I'm wrong!
