Handwashing Delicates | Silk Nightgown and Sheer Tights

Today on the blog, I'm sharing how I like to take care of my delicate laundry. I'm washing my silk nightgown and sheer tights by hand.

I place lukewarm water in a white tub with just a few drops of laundry detergent. I like to use delicate wash. My favorites are The Laundress Delicate Wash, Grove Collaborative, Mrs. Meyer's, Method, Hiketron, or any silk wash. I place the garment in the tub and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then I gently wash the garment and run under cold water (without wringing it out).

To extract the extra water, I roll it up in a towel and squeeze out the extra moisture. I hang the nightgown to dry and steam it the next day. You cold also iron it on the inside to get out the wrinkles.

This process really doesn't take long and is worth doing to prolong the life of the garment.

Great video as usual. I was taught the towel method to deal with cardigans and jumpers (sweaters), but with one additional step - once they are rolled up gently stand with bare feet on the length of the towel a few times - it really gets the excess water out! Probably not necessary for silk, but it will cut your drying time in half for woolies. Further instructions included peg and then thread a pair of old stockings knotted at the ends through one arm, over the line and through the other arm and peg again to dry with no hanging marks on the garment.

After I hand wash delicates I put them in my washer for about a minute spin in the final spin cycle - hugely cuts down on the drying time and I've never noticed that spinning in the washer damages anything - even expensive sweaters can handle a quick spin to get rid of excess water. IF it's a truly delicate item like thighs or nylon hose I spin them in a laundry bag - after hand washing. I then hang most items on a drying rack and turn on a small fan - items dry very quickly. Of course some items like really delicate sweaters need to be dried flat but even then I use the small fan to speed up the drying time.
