Watch This When You Don't Feel Like Cleaning

5:55 AM 3 Comments

Watch this video when you must clean… but you don’t feel like it.

Welcome back to the Daily Connoisseur and another homemaking video. I’m hoping to provide inspiration for you today. You might be wondering why I’m outside stabbing sweet potatoes.

Well, that’s because the kitchen is still a hot mess from breakfast. It’s just one of those days… School is out. My kids are still in their pajamas. One of them has a cold. My work is piling up. I’m just not feeling it. We all have one of those days. But I need to get these sweet potatoes in the oven for lunch and clean up the kitchen. So I thought I’d capture it and give you a bit of encouragement because let’s face it… WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE.

Housework is mundane and unglamorous. It requires physical effort and can often feel like the dead last thing you want to do. Dead last! We want a little excitement in our lives. Some beauty. Sometimes you just want to play with the kids. Or you have a lot of work you need to get done. How tiresome to have to clean the kitchen… again! So, you don’t feel like cleaning. Don’t feel guilty. That’s a totally normal feeling. The question is, what are you going to do about it? Can you get someone else to clean it? If not, and it’s on you, here we go. Time to shift our mental attitude. Get on that apron and those gloves, pop in those air pods to listen to music or an audio book and get to it. Here’s my little secret. In At Home with Madame Chic I talk about the pleasures of the day and how they can be goal posts for you. So, I’m going to tuck into this messy kitchen right now, and stab the potatoes, and get lunch ready and then I have a bit of a treat planned…. Tea and Henry James by the pool. Yep, that’s what I’m aiming for. The imminent pleasure of the afternoon will see me through this, friends.

You’re not alone. Do you know that? I think every homemaker in the history of the world has felt this lack of motivation at some point, if not frequently. It’s totally natural and cyclical. I equate it to burnout. We go through cycles in our homemaking. Sometimes we are on top of it all. On point. Raring to go. Loving every minute of it. Then enter an illness in the household or a work deadline, or a beautiful day outside that you’d rather frolic in. Totally normal. Well, when I go dark about wanting to do my tasks, I like to shift my mental reality. Call it triggering the Matrix. As a man thinketh in his heart so is he, after all. So what do I need to think in my heart about this situation? If I moan and prolong this inevitable task, I’m only making it worse. The other day my son had a gross-tasting medicine he had to take. He was prolonging it by taking wee bitty little sips. I told him he was prolonging the bad taste. Just get it over with, I tried to encourage him. He took it in two shots and it was done with. I’m going to take this kitchen in two shots. Because I have plans this afternoon.

I take a coconut tea loaf out of the freezer to thaw and plate lunch for today. Doesn’t it look delicious? After lunch there is a light cleanup and a few more tasks to accomplish. Let’s talk about these pleasures as our goal posts. Give yourself a treat. Something to look forward to. You are not an automaton. You can’t just break your back every day (proverbially speaking) and not reward yourself. The brain responds well to treats and they are good for your mental health. So when I am faced with a task I don’t particularly want to do, I make sure there is something special waiting for me at the end of it. This doesn’t demean the task I’m doing, rather, it exalts it and makes it more exciting. I’m able do it with vigor and more enthusiasm. If there was nothing to look forward to that might not be the case.

Afternoon tea is a daily pleasure for me. The whole ritual from start to finish is calming and centering from the pouring of the water into the pot, to the stirring of the sugar and milk. The coconut tea cake will be served with heavy cream and blueberries. I take it outside to enjoy my rest along with this volume of Henry James’ letters… Remember, make time to relax. It’s imperative. I know your to-do list is still long. There’s so much more you need to accomplish today but that can wait. Use the pleasure of the afternoon as your goal post. When you reach it and reward yourself you will feel a sense of joy.

Homemaking Motivation | Get It Done Stylishly

6:07 AM 0 Comments

I’m sharing some major homemaking motivation in today’s video and encouraging you to get it all done… stylishly.

Welcome back to the Daily Connoisseur. Sometimes when we get into a rut as homemakers, we need some extra motivation to get back into it all. I find when I’m having these unmotivated feelings making what I’m doing stylish and beautiful seriously helps. We homemakers are visual creatures. We love beauty! It’s a natural want. Why else would we work tirelessly to make a lovely home or cook a mouth-watering meal? Because we want to live a beautiful life at home and life at home sets the scene for our lives in the big wide world.

I always start the day with dressing to express not only my style, but mood. Some days I feel a bit whimsical, some days more formal, today I feel like being fun and playful. I’m wearing the MerSea Breton slub tee and Mott and Bow skinny jeans (JLS10 for 10% off). This shirt just reminds me of adventure. Maybe because the red stripes remind me of the sea or pirates (haha). Homemakers… don’t forget your jewelry! You might not be seeing anyone all day, that doesn’t matter. If you’re like me, it’s noticing pretty nails, smelling the subtle scent of my perfume, the tinkling of my jewelry, and a whimsical watch that keeps me cheerful throughout the day. I’m playing with my jewelry today by layering the Dana Rebecca bar necklace with the Miranda Frye Gothic letter charm (Jennifer10 10% off) necklace. And of course, this whole look needs to be topped off with the homemaker’s pièce de résistance: the apron. Now I’m ready to work.

Time to make lunch. I’m going to whip up some steaks in the air fryer today. I’ve been low key loving my air fryer. I brush the steaks with olive oil and season them with steak seasoning and cook them in the preheated air fryer on the steak setting. I’m making some cheesy rice pilaf, steamed broccoli, and maple butternut squash to go with it. Isn’t homemaking like a fine dance? The effort it takes to cook a multifaceted meal for the whole family, even a basic one like this, requires coordination, a sense of adventure (for who knows how it will all turn out?) and an eye for style. I flip the steaks halfway through cooking and then allow them to rest on a cutting board while I go pick some flowers for the table.

I’m going to use this blue and taupe tablecloth for lunch today. Choosing and laying the tablecloth is always my favorite part. Then I venture into the garden to see what flowers are on offer. My very favorite rose, the double delight, is blooming magnificently right now so I decide to cut some blooms. While I’m there, the little boy from next door is chatting to me through the fence. What a pleasant surprise that was. He was telling me about the roses in his garden. He said they have pink and yellow roses. What a lovely moment to connect with another human being unexpectedly. The double delight rose has such an intoxicating scent. It was developed in 1977 and is a hybrid tea rose, made from the red and yellow “Granada” tea rose and the ivory “Garden Party” rose. What a thing of beauty. I’m setting the table with the square rattan place mats, and for a bit of contrast, these blue striped napkins. I’ve always liked the combination of stripes and florals. Portmeirion Botanic Garden drinking glasses round off the spring look of the table.

Time to cut the meat and plate the dishes. Some people ask if we serve dinner family style or if I plate every meal. I find with little ones, that it’s easier for me to plate their meal beforehand so generally I do that. My girls are old enough to use a steak knife but my boys aren’t, so I cut their steak into smaller pieces. I generally know how much they will eat so I plate the food accordingly. And now it’s time to enjoy lunch. My son thinks it's hilarious the camera is at the table. I do admit, it’s rather strange!

And now time for laundry. Does it ever end? The answer is no. No, it does not. But therein lies the secret: if you must do the laundry, make your routine a ritual. I like to listen to audiobooks when I’m folding the laundry. Today I’m in my daydreams. I make it a meditation. I get my senses involved. I dream up ideas and play them out in my head while folding the towels. Hey, it’s just another moment to dream… why not seize it?

The day is done. I like to take a nice hot bath in the evening and read a book while looking at the birds on the treetops. Then getting into my pajamas is a joy. You know I love stylish sleepwear. This is the Sunday Morning Silk pajama set (Daily15 15% off) in emerald green and my red velvet slippers. I need to do some planning (CONNOISSEUR10 10% off) for the week and I plan to journal a bit more as well. But first, a nice cup of herbal tea will help me wind down after a long day. The rituals of tea are so comforting aren’t they? The rolling boil from the kettle. The pouring of the water. The stirring in the cup. Ah, it’s magic. I go through my planner to see what’s coming up this week and write down a few things I need to do. I’m going to do some journaling too. Homemakers, take time to reflect at the end of the day. Write down your thoughts, your happiness, your sadness, your dreams, your struggles, your inspiration. Write it all down. Reflect on your day. Hopefully whatever happened, you enjoyed yourself and did it all with style.

Carolyn writes, "I so enjoyed reading the children’s poetry by Stevenson. My world here in northern Wisconsin is just now awakening to spring. Our little house is surrounded by trees which are alive with birds. All so busy building their nests and feeding their young. I shared on Facebook Stevenson’s poem, “Nest Eggs”, delightful and charming. By the way, one of our favorite authors, D. E. Stevenson, was a niece of Robert Louis."

Hi Carolyn, the description of your garden had me smiling. I just love observing the birds ♥️ Happy spring!

I hope you enjoyed today's video and that it provides homemaking inspiration for you. See you soon!

The Madame Chic Method for a Clutter-Free Home

6:54 AM 0 Comments

In Lessons from Madame Chic we learn that clutter is so not chic. Today we are going to discuss the Madame Chic method for ridding your home of clutter once and for all (hint: it's an ongoing process).
I hope you enjoy today's video

Let's examine the five points:

Hot Spots are the high-traffic areas in your home where clutter easily accumulates. The clutter might rotate here… but it is always there. Identify where your hot spots are. Be aware of them. Aim to sort through these every day. Don’t become accustomed to them. Work together with your family to keep these hot spots under control. Likely they will always be hot spots in that they are in high traffic areas, but they don’t have to be a disorganized mess.

Stagnant Spaces These are the out-of-the-way areas that accumulate clutter. This clutter tends to sit there waiting for something to happen, but it never does. This is the area I have always most struggled with and continue to do so today. Because sometimes when you are clearing your visible hot spots, you cram the clutter you don’t know what to do with in your stagnant spaces. Schedule regular times to go through these spaces. Listen to a good audiobook so you don’t feel it’s such a chore and actually look forward to going through the hot mess.

Look at your home with new eyes This one is big. BIG. We all become accustomed to how our home looks and we become comfortable with the clutter. In the beginning you might be annoyed with that perpetual pile of clutter in the corner or the pile of things you have to go through, but over time you become desensitized to it and these piles might start to build up and accumulate. Soon, it just doesn’t bother you anymore. But you might become hyper aware of your clutter zones when a new person comes to visit your home. So an exercise I put forth in Lessons from Madame Chic is to walk into your home. Physically do it. From the front door. And look around as if you were entering for the first time. Maybe as a potential buyer for a home. You would instantly notice places that were off or the clutter you got so used to would become unsightly for you.

Check the flow When I lived in Santa Monica, I had a good friend, who has since passed away, and she was a Feng Shui expert. She taught me so much about the importance of energy and flow in a space. Some people think that a space that’s properly “feng shui-ed” (is that even a word?) is very minimalist, but that’s not true. Any space can employ the principles of Feng Shui. Madame Chic’s apartment had such a wonderful flow. There was absolutely no clutter to obstruct energy. Clutter is considered negative in the world of Feng Shui because it causes congestion in the overall flow of a room and we want rooms with beautiful free-flowing energy. Even without being trained in the art of Feng Shui, you can probably look at the room you’re in now to determine if there is a good flow. Or is there a pile or clutter or an object or two that you need to remove from the space.

Is it beautiful? This could be the biggest Madame Chic method principle. Is your room beautiful? This matters, you know. Women, especially, are very visual creatures who need to be surrounded by beauty. Clutter often destroys the beauty in a room. I think of it like a beautiful outfit with a big coffee stain on it. The stain is the clutter. You deserve to live in beautiful surroundings. You shouldn’t wait for this to happen “one day when the kids are older” or when XYZ happens. No, it can happen now. I don’t mean to go have a shopping spree to redecorate. I mean to fix your space now. Do you need to rearrange the furniture? Are you finally getting things out of that room that don’t belong? Are there school supplies in the kitchen that should be in the homeschool room? Is your entryway crammed with coats and shoes you don’t wear right now? Are there toys that don’t belong on the coffee table? Create beauty with what you have already by clearing the clutter in your home.
