Enchanted Homemaking on an October Evening

6:53 AM 1 Comments

 Enchantment
By Jennifer L. Scott

 One October Evening,
I steal outside to breathe.
Release my swirling thoughts,
Around my head they wreathe.

Smell the midnight roses,
And tinkle the wind chime.
Regard the jasmine plant,
I’m training it to climb.

Crisp October evenings,
I feel enchantment deep.
Inspire me again,
Infuse my dreams in sleep.

Welcome back to the Daily Connoisseur. We had our first rain of the season today and the flowers returned in gorgeous bloom to celebrate. It’s earlier in the day now and I’m making a creamy tomato tortellini soup for lunch, but first I will lay the table.

Enchantment is an original poem by Jennifer L. Scott. All rights reserved.

These everyday rituals…. I’ve done them a million times. Preparing the table never gets old to me. I like to choose the tablecloth and make it look well-dressed. Today I’d like to compliment the white lilies so I’m going with a cream cloth and the rattan placemats

Creamy Tomato Spinach Tortellini Soup

Creamy Tomato Spinach Tortellini Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 -3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 Tbs olive oil
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary
  • 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 28 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups vegetable or chicken stock
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 12 oz chopped spinach
  • 1 package (20oz) cheese tortellini
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • handful of fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium heat until the onions are translucent. Add the fresh rosemary and cook for one minute. Add the tomatoes, sauce, vegetable stock, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and basil. Simmer on low for 20 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped spinach and tortellini and cook for 12 minutes, or until tortellini is fully cooked. Take off heat and mix in parmesan cheese. Serve with extra parmesan on top. Enjoy.

And now to get started on the soup. I sauté one chopped onion in olive oil in my giant soup pot. I also add a sprig of rosemary to deepen the flavor. Once the onion is softened, I add chicken stock, diced tomatoes, tomato puree, and heavy cream and season this all with salt and pepper. I’m going to let that simmer on low for 20 minutes while I take care of the laundry.

I find that homemaking has so much to do with time management and optimizing every moment you have. It’s a choreographed dance, but once you get into the flow, it is enjoyable. I just can’t forget I’m cooking something on the stove! And now back to the soup. I’m going to chop a large bushel of spinach to add to the soup. Then I add the tortellini and some extra basil and let this cook for 12 more minutes. When it’s finished, I ladle the soup into bowls and top with parmesan cheese. This is being served with a deliciously robust flavored brown bread with Irish butter. Could there be a better fall luncheon?

And now it’s time to put on my gloves. I have an ongoing project to scrub the baseboards. I usually start this time of year so that by Thanksgiving they look shiny and new. I find that using a magic eraser works best on the kitchen base boards, which tend to have grease and grime sticking to them. I soak the magic eraser in water and squeeze it out. If there is a lot of stuck-on grime, I add a bit of dish soap. This is one of those rather unpleasant tasks. Nowhere near as satisfying as laying the table. But I have a treat in store for myself after this, so I carry on scrubbing.

Time to restore my senses to beauty once again. I found these flowers on sale at the grocery store. Technically they were the least desirable ones. But I plan to make an elegant bouquet of them nonetheless. I feel my vase with the eucalyptus first and dot in these beautiful purple flowers. They are called a wavy leaf sea lavender. Scientific name: Limonium sinuatum. This is a great flower for drying. When I used to visit my grandmother in Cambria, I always loved seeing this flower hanging from the rafters of the local shops. But it also lasts a long time in bouquets. I like to challenge myself to buy the flowers on sale and create an expensive looking bouquet. Mission accomplished!

We are headed for the enchanted October evening, but first the kitchen must be put to right. I don’t have kitchen duty every night, it switches between my husband, myself, and the kids, but tonight is my night and I’m going to find the enchantment in it. I find it enjoyable to come downstairs after everyone is in bed, light a candle, and listen to an audiobook while I tidy up. Tonight, I’m listening to the sounds of cleaning and allowing my swirling thoughts to wreathe around my head. October is an enchanting month. The air is different. And the path to winter is now well established.

Crisp October evenings, I feel enchantment deep. Inspire me again, Infuse my dreams in sleep.

Thank you for joining me on The Daily Connoisseur. I hope this inspired you to find the enchantment in your everyday life, even in the most mundane tasks. Keep calm and remain classy and I’ll see you next time.

Love,

Jennifer

I hope you enjoy today's homemaking video.

Eithne writes, "I liked what you said about not wanting to get rid of the laughter lines. Audrey Hepburn was once asked if she would like her wrinkles airbrushed out of a photo. She said ‘don’t you dare. I earned every one of those wrinkles’"

I love that story about Audrey Hepburn. I feel the same way. I've earned each and every laugh line. And they were created in joy!

The Repetitive Nature of Homemaking

6:02 AM 3 Comments

To continue my series on the art of homemaking, we are exploring the repetitive nature of our daily work.

Today's video is dedicated to my friend, Cliff Simon, who we tragically lost in March of this year. Cliff was one-of-a-kind: a talented actor, author, adventurer, and dear friend. He will be greatly missed.

In loving memory of

The Repetitive Nature of Homemaking
By Jennifer L. Scott

The repetitive nature of homemaking… something we all have to deal with. What mindset do we need? How should we approach it? What joy can we derive from it? That’s what we are exploring in today’s video.

What prompted me to explore the repetitive nature of homemaking? Filming this video. I’m often doing the same things in my videos… washing dishes, laying tablecloths, straightening the sofas, wiping surfaces.

Homemaking, particularly cleaning, is a repetitive business, isn’t it? In our modern world, our brains are wired for excitement. Our attention spans are short. We all long for very nice things… certainly interiors. So how does the mundane, repetitive and necessary care of our home… the thing that rarely changes… fit into this modern world? That could be why homemaking is often dreaded, or shall we say, misunderstood?

I’ve written about this in my Madame Chic books, but homemaking tasks can certainly be compared to Sisyphus. Sisyphus is a figure from Greek mythology. Zeus gave him the punishment of forever rolling the boulder up the hill in Hades. Well, I’m not going to lie and say that homemaking sometimes doesn’t feel like that. Because it does. We clean something once and sometimes within an hour, it needs attention again! Certainly every day, various tasks need to be done. Over and over again. So, for our brains, which are tuned for excitement. How do we avoid becoming bitter, like I’m sure old Sisyphus was? The key is in deriving comfort and joy from these repetitive tasks. If they are tasks you must do, then you must learn to enjoy them.

Not all tasks are created equal, and some are more glamorous than others. Scrubbing the walls is not a favorite of mine. I usually get other people to do this, but this particular wall, with its crayon marks and dirt, was really bothering me. These high-traffic areas need cleaning on a regular basis if our homes are to look tidy. So if you’re doing a task that is by nature, rather unenjoyable, focus on the result, which will be a clean, sparkling place. That is enough to bring me joy. But truly, no matter what you’re doing, aim to look on the bright side and find the one aspect of the task, which can spark positive feelings in you. If I’m alone and no one is around, I like to focus on the sounds of cleaning. Those quiet, everyday sounds that we take for granted, but can bring us comfort, can also bring us companionship. If you are surrounded with a loud family, and oftentimes we are, aim to find the joy in that. And hey, give them a broom and they can help!

Let’s talk about self-presentation. Because that, for me, brings about joy as well. It’s important that I get dressed and look my best every day. Many homemakers fall into the trap of thinking that because they are doing these mundane, repetitive tasks, they don’t need to dress up for it. So many will sentence themselves to a life of “cleaning clothes”… you know, misshapen, old clothes that you don’t care about if they get ruined. Or perpetual workout clothes. The trouble with this, is that our repetitive homemaking tasks are never going away. They are repetitive. They are Sisyphean. And so each and every day we will find ourselves doing them. So, you ask yourself. Each and every day do I want to wear clothes for drudgery? Or do I want to get dressed and present my true style to the world? Even if it’s just me? Life is short, my friends. Dress to express yourself. Dress for dignity. Put an apron on if you have to. But you don’t want to go through your whole life realizing you were saving your best clothes for that special occasion that never came. When I dress for the day, I feel better. I feel joyous. I feel dignified, even if my task is the same old task I do every day of my life.

And finally, my fellow connoisseurs, don’t forget to take time for yourself. Indulge in the restorative rituals every day that bring you pleasure. Because yes, we have repetitive cleaning tasks, but we can also have repetitive breaks that revive our spirit and recharge us for what’s to come next. Sisyphus never took a tea break… but we can. I hope you enjoyed today’s homemaking video.

Stacie writes, "I love your tip about sitting down to eat your meals. I have a story I'd like to share. I worked in the OR for more than 30 years, and to say the nurse's lounge during lunch time is chaotic is an understatement. However, there was one nurse that ALWAYS set out her real plate, silverware and glass to have her meal. Sometimes it was a salad she prepared from home or sandwich or chicken strips from hospital kitchen. It was like a little calm in the midst of the storm. I never forgot that and now that I'm retired, I always set a real plate, silverware and glass to have my meals--even if I'm by myself.... Stacie"

Dear Stacie, I loved your story. It expressed how elegant people stand out so perfectly. In the chaos of the lunchroom, she stood out and left a great impression on you. I loved that. Thank you for sharing it.

I hope you enjoyed today's homemaking video and that it gave you much to ponder. See you soon!

Love,

Jennifer

This may be one of my favorite 10 items you've ever done. I've been following since 2013 so I feel like an old pro... even with my absence the last year! Nearly One Hour of ASMR Cleaning Motivation | Relaxing, Peaceful, Elegant

6:37 AM 4 Comments

If the number one enemy to homemaking is distraction, then there is certainly a great need for motivation. Today I'm doing a rather unusual video for you. I have nearly one hour of cleaning motivation.

There is no speaking (after the introduction), there are no words on the screen, just the blissful sounds of uninterrupted cleaning along with beautiful music flowing in and out. My purpose for making such a video is to accompany you in your homemaking endeavors. If you find yourself lacking inspiration and motivation, simply put this video on and we can do the tasks together.

Homemaking can be a lonely endeavor. Other than the help we get from our family, it is generally a solitary pursuit. But that doesn't mean that it has to be sad and irksome. We can seek the beauty in even the must mundane of tasks.

So join me for a new kind of power hour. The types of cleaning videos typically found on YouTube are quite different and I'm happy to provide an alternative. I hope that you enjoy this video and return to it again and again.

With love,

Jennifer
