As mothers, we all have one of those days. You know what I'm talking about... when you didn't get much sleep the night before, your back hurts, and your work load seems endless. Well, this is one of those days for me! But in true Daily Connoisseur style, I'm not letting that deter me. I find having a sense of humor is vital when you are feeling out of sorts. But what about when you need to get it together to attend something important? In that case, in addition to a sense of humor, all you need is 5 to 10 minutes :)
In this week's video, I show you how I get ready with a 5-minute makeup routine and quick hairstyle in order to look presentable for my daughter's back-to-school night.
I hope you enjoy this video! If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Hi Jennifer,
I would like to share about my night time routine. Growing up the only person in my family to have a night time routine was my father, and it simply consisted of setting up the automatic coffee maker so he'd have coffee to drink on his way to work. All of us would toss our clothes on the floor (my father had a valet stand) and climb into unmade beds when we got tired. I am married and have a toddler with another little one on the way now and I was so overwhelmed by life that a few months ago I started to implement a before bed routine for the first time in my life. I actually made it a check off list so that I could see when I succeeded in my calendar.
My list is as follows:
-Set the temperature and close the curtains.
-Put my child to bed.
-Make lunch for my husband.
-Empty the sink and start dishwasher.
-Take out the trash and recycle.
-Lay out tomorrow's clothes.
-Start a load of laundry.
-Brush teeth/wash face/put on pajamas.
-Drink a glass of water.
A couple of times over the last few weeks I have thought quietly to myself, "I'm not going to bother with the list tonight I'm tired." Only to say, "Well maybe I'll just do this before bed..." And next thing I know my one thing turns into the complete list!
Mornings run so much smoother when I've gotten ready for them the night before. My husband has had clean nice clothing for work since I started and hasn't had to run to Burger King for lunch. Additionally, I don't feel as if the day has conquered me before it's started.

Dear Kathleen, your comment made me smile! One of the great things about running your own home is, you get to set your own routines. I do the same thing. Sometimes when I'm tired, I think I'll just do one thing... and then before you know it, it's all finished! Thank you for sharing your routine with us.

I have a set routine that I follow every morning in a specific order. It makes things so much easier, especially if I don't feel well or have slept poorly the night before. I can still get everything done, because I can accomplish my tasks on autopilot. A few of my "tasks" involve taking time for me while I can, like exercising, meditating, and getting dressed. I think it's important to ensure that your own needs are taken care of, too -- not only your family's.
One task that I no longer have to do is set out my clothes the night before. Since I implemented the 10 item wardrobe, I no longer stand in front of the closet wondering what to wear. I check the weather, reach in and pull out clothes that suit the conditions and what I'm doing that day, and no matter what I pick, I know that it will look good together and will be attractive.
Hi Mimianderly, yes! With the ten-item wardrobe you don't need to lay your clothes out the night before because it is so easy to choose what to wear the next morning, and you know you'll look presentable. Thank you for pointing this out!
This week I would love to know, do you ever have "one of those days"? How do you cope? Do you have any fun 'look presentable always' stories to tell us? Let me know in the comment section and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

Thank you so much for making this video! It describes many of my days, and this provides great inspiration not to let things slide on crazy days.
You are so cute, even when you're tired, and I hope your back-to-school night went well. Thank you for sharing your five-minute makeup tutorial and the "list," which I always find so helpful. You looked wonderful, Jennifer. I don't have children and find inspiration in how you do it all so well in all areas of your life. I truly mean this. Thank you for sharing your videos. I feel like I learn something with each one and connect with a friend every time I watch one of your videos.
I can certainly relate to those endless days! What truly helps me is choosing one of my best teacups for my morning coffee--it sets the tone for my day and each sip is savored (like choosing your best to wear!). Also, family prayer. I have two boys, and a newborn girl. In the morning, after my husband gets the boys ready for the day and before they head off to school, they wake me up and we gather in the den to pray for five minutes. That quiet, still moment helps recenter all of us.

Jennifer, this is one of my favorite videos that I have seen you do.
I first read about Le No Makeup Look a year and a half ago, while caring for my new (fifth) baby, and haven't looked back. It's now something I barely need to think about in the morning, like making my bed. It just takes a few minutes and I feel ready to face the day.
Also, I loved your meet the teacher outfit. I've been making plans for my fall/winter wardrobe, and that was good inspiration.
Enjoy your baby this week.
I learned the hard way to always look presentable. Back when I was taking care of my mother during her declining years, when I planned to just stay home and clean without venturing out, I used to go without makeup or contacts, not style my hair, and wear "grubbies". Then I had to take her to emergency for stitches when she cut herself pretty badly. I'd like to say that this only happened once before I learned, but that was not the case. It seemed that the only time I had these emergencies is when I looked horrible. I put two and two together, and being a bit superstitious, decided that my looking like hell contributed to these mishaps somehow. Just to be on the safe side, I started at least styling my hair and putting in my contacts and a bit of makeup. Now, after reading your books, I don't even own "grubbies", I wear a minimal makeup every single day, and I always style my hair and put in my contacts. This all only takes a little bit of time, and I feel so much better, no matter how my day goes. I think I can handle things better when I look presentable.
Oh Jennifer, you are so down to earth and beautiful inside and out. Wish you knew exactly how much this video helped me and made me feel not so alone. I consciously know I'm not the only stay at home mom who is extremely busy, but I feel a constant lonliness, as if im the only person going through this. Sometimes, I just can't find time even to sit, but your books constantly remind me to take a few moments for myself. (up a bit earlier to dress presentable, sit at lunch, play music while cleaning). You, well your helpful tips, have become a part of my everyday routine and life.
Sometimes, motherhood can feel overwhelming, but always remember we are so blessed to have our families and health.

Hi Jennifer,
I need your advice on how to deal with unsolicited and unwanted comments about one's body. I am tall and slender (5'9" and a size 6), but I have fuller calves. I always have; it is my natural body type no matter how slim I get. I also prefer wearing ballet or pointy flats for comfort (I'm a teacher) and because I enjoy the elegant, chic look they exude. I have always loved fashion and I'm not choosing dowdy styles. I've had adults make comments since I was a young teen, even though looking back on photos, my legs looked normal to me. Now, I have colleagues, and even students, say some pretty horrific things. The dramatic responses would make you think I'm the Elephant Man, not a woman with a fuller calf. I cannot tell you what it has done to my self esteem and how it has affected the way I dress. I want that cycle to end, especially since I am a woman of faith and I know my beauty and worth. Upon reading your books and watching your videos, I know I need to be true to myself and not wear heels or cover my legs in pants just to meet someone else's standard of beauty (people make fun of my legs in heels, too). I just need to know how to respond when adults and my students make those comments. What is the elegant, poised woman to do?
Thank you.
Jennifer, watching this post, I'm drawn back to a time when I was a young mother...sleep deprived with a newborn. I look back and wonder how I managed...barely sometimes and why, like you, I did it three times over?
I admire you so much, especially admitting that you are not always 100% at your best, yet you always uphold at least "your" minimal standards for being always presentable. Looking around, I'd wager that your minimal standards, Jennifer, are, unfortunately, far and above those I witness too very often in my everyday life when shopping for groceries, going to the drugstore, and too very often out for a "nice" dinner in an upscale restaurant.
Keep up the "good fight" Jennifer. The pendulum always seems to swing.
Jennifer, as always, you inspire us and make us feel that we are not alone! Thank you. What white tee shirt brand are you wearing in the video? I am looking for the 'perfect' white tee and I like the neckline on yours. PS You look beautiful.
Warmly, Kathleen
Oh Jennifer, thank you SO much for this video! I am a mom of 4, and my littlest one is currently 8 months old and still up at night at least twice. I'm homeschooling and my kids are all ages 5.5 and under. I have "one of those days" just about EVERY day and I HATE when i can't look presentable. This will help me so much and is so inspiring.
I have a question for you. I have a very simple wardrobe, and I typically wear something similar to your outfit in this video. I do not have a statement necklace though, and so it is hard for me to make my outfits not look boring. Do you know of a good place to get a statement necklace that will not burn a hole in my pocket? I cannot save hundreds of dollars for a necklace, that just feels wrong for me when I need to clothe my children (and myself) and make sure we have what we need. I would so appreciate any tips on this!
Thank you!
Love your outfit, but more than that, love your positive attitude.
Great vid!
Best,
Luciana.
Hi Jennifer,
Some weeks every day feels like "one of those days" for me. And the saddest part is, I don't even have children yet. What will I do when that time comes? Perhaps reread your books every week for motivation. I commend you moms (and dads) out there that are able to juggle everything around and still put effort into yourselves.
To your point, it is important to look presentable always, even if you are having a rough day. Although I don't have kids, I work 55 hours minimum each week and get maybe 2 full days off a month. There is no excuse to look messy going to work just because I am tired. Or throw any old outfit on to go to run errands. Who knows who you might meet! And worse, everyone will see you! Five minutes to throw your hair into a chignon, quickly moisturize, apply concealer and lipstick is all it takes to look presentable quickly. I find that when I look good, I feel good, and my days goes so much smoother.
Many of us in this community wouldn't be able to employ these practices if it wasn't for your books and guiding us through this lifestyle change.
Thank you,
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer! I love this week's video because it so clearly illustrates your message that we are aiming for presentability and effort, not perfection. I think it this world of Pinterest and Instagram filters, it is easy to think " I don't have the time or energy today to do it perfectly, so I am just going to schlepp it today!" But you really inspire your readers by the consistency and genuiness of your message.
Also, regarding your previous message about 10 item wardrobes when one works outside the home. I do, and as a consequence I do not practice a strict 10 item or even 20 item wardrobe. However, your approach has really helped me develop an entirely different attitude towards clothes purchases. I now do not shop for recreation. I buy less and buy better. I try to use my best everyday and try to keep my wardrobe down a small size. I feel more comfortable wearing items in frequent rotation. So, I would say that even though I do not follow a strict 10 item wardrobe, I implement the principles faithfully. My goal for this season is to try to cull down my wardrobe even more. I always adopt the 5 min Le no makeup look, because at 45, I definitely need it now!
