A Highly Unusual Day in the Life | Inside Edition Appearance

6:41 AM 3 Comments

Welcome to another highly unusual day in the life. Get ready with me as I prepare for an appearance on the television show, Inside Edition

I wear heavier makeup for the occasion, but also answer many frequently asked questions about my recent makeup and hair changes.

Thank you to Skillshare for sponsoring today's video.

The crew for Inside Edition was wonderful. We had a fun shoot. It's interesting to see what goes into producing a television show like this.

And you can read the article here (also includes the video).

We took a lot of footage and they boiled it down to this small clip. To get camera-ready for the appearance, I put on heavier makeup, focusing on full-coverage application of foundation, and lots of bronzer and eyeshadow.

Here are the links to the makeup I use in the video.

In the segment, I discuss my prepper (or victory) pantry. Why is it important to stock up on extra supplies right now? With the pandemic as a regular and uncertain aspect of our present and future, it's important to be prepared for any eventuality. I was convicted of this when reading, The Long Winter, to the girls earlier this year. When Laura and her family nearly ran out of food, I felt the undercurrent of dread her parents must have felt. This is not meant to be alarmist. You know my motto is, "being chic is prepared". Let's get prepared together. I hope you enjoy today's video.

This is the recipe for the apple cider vinegar tea I was drinking. It's from The Homesteading Family.

Comment of the Week

Sharon writes, "Thank you for such fun assignments. My most favorite poem ever (actually an excerpt from Aurora Leigh) is by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
But only he who sees, takes off his shoes,
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries,

That's how I want to see life, and this poem reminds me to do just that. I keep it posted on my refrigerator door."

That is a beautiful excerpt, Sharon. Many people on YouTube expressed the same thoughts on that passage. Thank you!

I hope you enjoyed today's highly unusual day in the life. I would love to hear your thoughts below. Your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog. Have a great day and I will see you on Saturday for the holiday gift guide.

A Highly Unusual Day in the Life: Extreme Hair and Makeup Transformation

7:35 AM 7 Comments

Welcome to another highly unusual day in my life...

This week I had a photoshoot for a very exciting project that is coming up, and today I take you along with me. Whenever you have the opportunity to have your makeup and hair done by a professional, I recommend that you not only ask them questions on the best products and techniques for yourself, but to also film it so you can replay and watch how they apply your makeup.

Ok, I look like a deer in headlights in this photo, but it's a good close-up still shot from the video that shows the makeup really well...

Today's video is a treat because you get to see the major photo-ready transformation I underwent, including eyelashes and contouring, which are two things I normally do not do.

The makeup look is quite extreme, but it's meant to highlight the face beautifully in photos, and Jackie, my makeup artist, did an amazing job. Thank you, Jackie!

Jackie used a Beauty Blender-like sponge to apply my makeup. I recently purchased these dupes on Amazon and am very happy with them. They are a great price too.

Featured in the video:
Lace dresses (similar) Morning Lavender
Lace dresses (similar) Lulu's

I hope you enjoy today's video and get a kick out of seeing this very glamorous makeover.

Carolyn writes, "I love time management and organization books and articles. Over the years I have read numerous times that the most important thing a homemaker can do in managing their home is meal planning. I have found it takes stress from my days when I have a plan. An additional benefit is saving money because you are buying what you need, not random food items. Leftovers (or planned overs) also means some days with little food prep. Thank you for being a mentor in the area of homemaking for so many of us."

Carolyn, I love time management books too. You are so correct, there are many benefits to meal planning. I'm glad you enjoyed Monday's video!

I hope you enjoyed today's fun makeover transformation. I will see you this weekend for a new 3 Articles on Dress.

Get Ready with Me | Wedding Guest Edition

6:44 AM 4 Comments

In today's video, I invite you to get ready with me to attend a springtime wedding. I love dressing up for weddings and today I'm wearing my floral maxi dress from my core items.

Normally a wedding guest outfit will call for pulling from your extras (a fancy cocktail dress, or other special occasion dress) but I was able to dress up my core item floral maxi and make it look dressy and fashionable.

First, let's start with the makeup: Here is a list of all makeup I used in today's video.
barePro liquid foundation, bareMinerals under eye concealer, Finishing powder by A'DEL natural cosmetics, primer potion (for the eyelids), Osmosis eyeshadow in spice berry, A'DEL eyeliner pot, burgundy mascara (and primer), Osmosis blush, Osmosis highlighter (on top of the cheekbones), A'DEL lipstick in Deep and Osmosis lip gloss.

On my nails: Londontown Teatime (use code JenniferS for 25% off).

I flat ironed the frizzy parts of my hair with the n:p beautiful flat iron, and then used the curling iron to curl the ends.

I am wearing the floral maxi dress (also linking similar here, here and a budget option here), a tan pashmina, the Ferragamo pumps, and a clutch (linking similar here). The gemstone jewelry adds a dressy touch.

When you dress for a wedding, the goal is to look beautifully presentable to honor the occasion. One of the most frequently asked questions I receive about special occasions is, "What do I wear to a wedding in [insert location or time of year here]". If there isn't a specific dress code on the invitation, simply think about the venue, location, and time of year. A simple dress paired with a classy shawl, low heels, and a clutch (a hat, if you live in Europe) will do the trick. Just think of wearing a beautiful color that will stand out in pictures.

Some wonder if you can wear white or black to weddings. The rules have really changed, but I would still shy away from wearing white. Black is more acceptable, especially if it is a night wedding. Several guests wore black to the wedding I attended and they look beautiful as they dressed up their black dresses with lively jewelry, and shawls, etc.

These are my thoughts on wedding attire and I would love to hear yours below.

I hope you enjoyed today's video.

Get Ready with Me: Tired Mom Edition

8:52 AM 14 Comments

As mothers, we all have one of those days. You know what I'm talking about... when you didn't get much sleep the night before, your back hurts, and your work load seems endless. Well, this is one of those days for me! But in true Daily Connoisseur style, I'm not letting that deter me. I find having a sense of humor is vital when you are feeling out of sorts. But what about when you need to get it together to attend something important? In that case, in addition to a sense of humor, all you need is 5 to 10 minutes :)

In this week's video, I show you how I get ready with a 5-minute makeup routine and quick hairstyle in order to look presentable for my daughter's back-to-school night.

I hope you enjoy this video! If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Comment of the Week

Kathleen writes:

Hi Jennifer,

I would like to share about my night time routine. Growing up the only person in my family to have a night time routine was my father, and it simply consisted of setting up the automatic coffee maker so he'd have coffee to drink on his way to work. All of us would toss our clothes on the floor (my father had a valet stand) and climb into unmade beds when we got tired. I am married and have a toddler with another little one on the way now and I was so overwhelmed by life that a few months ago I started to implement a before bed routine for the first time in my life. I actually made it a check off list so that I could see when I succeeded in my calendar.

My list is as follows:
-Set the temperature and close the curtains.
-Put my child to bed.
-Make lunch for my husband.
-Empty the sink and start dishwasher.
-Take out the trash and recycle.
-Lay out tomorrow's clothes.
-Start a load of laundry.
-Brush teeth/wash face/put on pajamas.
-Drink a glass of water.

A couple of times over the last few weeks I have thought quietly to myself, "I'm not going to bother with the list tonight I'm tired." Only to say, "Well maybe I'll just do this before bed..." And next thing I know my one thing turns into the complete list!

Mornings run so much smoother when I've gotten ready for them the night before. My husband has had clean nice clothing for work since I started and hasn't had to run to Burger King for lunch. Additionally, I don't feel as if the day has conquered me before it's started.

~Kathleen

Dear Kathleen, your comment made me smile! One of the great things about running your own home is, you get to set your own routines. I do the same thing. Sometimes when I'm tired, I think I'll just do one thing... and then before you know it, it's all finished! Thank you for sharing your routine with us.

Mimianderly writes:

I have a set routine that I follow every morning in a specific order. It makes things so much easier, especially if I don't feel well or have slept poorly the night before. I can still get everything done, because I can accomplish my tasks on autopilot. A few of my "tasks" involve taking time for me while I can, like exercising, meditating, and getting dressed. I think it's important to ensure that your own needs are taken care of, too -- not only your family's.

One task that I no longer have to do is set out my clothes the night before. Since I implemented the 10 item wardrobe, I no longer stand in front of the closet wondering what to wear. I check the weather, reach in and pull out clothes that suit the conditions and what I'm doing that day, and no matter what I pick, I know that it will look good together and will be attractive.

Hi Mimianderly, yes! With the ten-item wardrobe you don't need to lay your clothes out the night before because it is so easy to choose what to wear the next morning, and you know you'll look presentable. Thank you for pointing this out!

This week I would love to know, do you ever have "one of those days"? How do you cope? Do you have any fun 'look presentable always' stories to tell us? Let me know in the comment section and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

Get Ready With Me Coldplay Concert

8:47 AM 13 Comments

Last weekend we saw Coldplay live at the Rose Bowl for their Head Full of Dreams tour. The tickets were a surprise gift from my husband. I was thrilled because I have loved Coldplay for so long... they are one of my very favorite bands. This was my first outing after having the baby, so it was nice to do something so out of the ordinary.

Maureen writes: I'm three weeks postpartum and just starting to feel like cooking again. This video couldn't be timed better! Thanks for reminding me of some simple, tasty homemade dinners. Planning this week's menus feels much less daunting now!

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, Maureen! I'm happy that my video last week has inspired you with your menu planning.

This week I would love to know... did you attend any concerts this summer? Who did you see? What did you wear? Do you love Coldplay? What's your favorite song of theirs? (I love too many... I can't pick just one!)

See you next week!
