Emily Dickinson Makeup & Hair Tutorial

5:52 AM 15 Comments

Hello friends,

I'm coming to you on my birthday with a different kind of video...

As part of The Chic Assignment, we are reading the poetry of Emily Dickinson. I am fascinated by her life story and her poetry. I thought it would be fun to re-create her look with (le no) makeup and hair tutorial.

Our modern society loves to imitate celebrities of today, but I think it's fun to look at women from the past who have come before us, especially literary icons to the caliber of Emily Dickinson.

The key for this look is a completely natural makeup look without any brozers, shimmers, or other modern touches. Emily did not appear to wear makeup. If anything, she might have powdered her nose. Her skin appears to be very clear, creamy and matte.

I use makeup to simply bring out my features in a natural way. You can likely recreate this with the makeup you already have. For those of you wondering what makeup I used in today's video I am listing it here:
A'DEL foundation in beige, Osmosis translucent finishing powder,
Cream blush in Peach from A'DEL, black mascara from Osmosis, Lipstick from A'DEL in barely there, eye shadow Laura Mercier eye artist palette (no longer available) so I'm linking two comparable colors here from Osmosis.

For the hair: Emily has a very plain hairstyle with a middle part and (presumably) a low bun. I use my flat iron to smooth the hair to create Emily's sleek look. I take out hair on either side of the face and set it aside. Then tie the rest of the hair in a low ponytail (I'm using an invisibobble). Braid the ponytail in a simple three-strand braid and wrap it around the ponytail. Secure with bobby pins. Then take the strands on the side of the face and wrap them under and around the bun and secure with bobby pins.

The velvet neck tie is improvised from these velvet scrunchies that I have been loving (the tie is removable).

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial in today's video.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers
BY EMILY DICKINSON
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

And dresses are new to me...but I found one I liked and really do feel more feminine/put together wearing it. Very thankful for sharing your method with those of us with poor executive function."

Rainy Daze- I'm so happy for you! Thanks for taking the time to share your ten-item wardrobe progress with us.

I hope you enjoyed this fun tutorial. I'll see you next time for The Chic Assignment check-in.

6:40 AM 0 Comments

I'm trying out a shimmery eye and a watercolor cheek in today's le no makeup look tutorial.

I frequently get requests to share what makeup brushes I use. The brushes I've collected over the years had been from all different collections and they were starting to get old. Osmosis sent me their entire makeup brush line to use and review for you. The brushes are very high quality and are all available on Amazon luxury. I've been using the brushes for a few weeks now and am very impressed with their quality. Each brush has a specific job and does it well.

Kabuki Brush Small but mighty, this brush delivers medium to full coverage with a soft and luscious dome-shaped head that’s compact enough to travel with you anywhere you go! Because of its fullness, a little bit of product goes a long way with this brush, start small and build up as necessary.

Base Brush This flat top, synthetic vegan brush serves as the perfect partner to either your mineral powder and liquid Base products to promote seamless application with generous coverage in one easy step.

Dome Powder Brush
The full, rounded shape of this brush head makes it your go-to makeup multi-tasker. Touch up a light layer of base with the outer sides, or softly contour by sweeping on blush or bronzer using the tip of the brush.

Full Face Brush Luxurious and plush, this mega brush was designed for the perfect even light application of pressed and loose powders, illuminators, and bronzers. Its size also makes it a wonderful blending tool.

Large Accent Brush Use this large duo fiber brush to apply soft layers of liquid or powder foundation with ease, or create texture on the face with this ultimate blending tool. This hybrid brush has both synthetic and animal hair making it the perfect tool for a lightweight, airbrushed application for liquid, cream, and powder formulations.

Medium Accent Brush This hybrid brush has both synthetic and animal hair making it the perfect tool for a lightweight, airbrushed, application of liquid, cream, and powder formulations. With a medium sized head this brush is ideal for applying and blending blushes, bronzer, and highlighting.

Small Accent Brush This hybrid brush is made of both synthetic and animal hair, making it the perfect tool for a lightweight, airbrushed application of liquid, cream and powder formulations. Its tapered tip is ideal for pin-point concealing, setting powder to small areas and applying and blending color on the lids.

Angled Blush Brush Perfectly designed for precise blush, contour, and highlighter application, this brush flaunts dense bristles that are ideal for blending as you apply.

Blender Brush This full and fluffy brush head serves as a universal blending tool for any look. Ideal for both creamy and powder formulations, this go-to brush helps smudge eye looks, buff out creases or lines, and blend precise areas.

Osmosis Skincare Contour Shadow Brush

Contour Shadow Brush Effortlessly add dimension and definition to your eye look with the pencil-like shape of this brush head that caters to both precision and blending.

Crease Brush While this brush is optimal for applying and blending shadow in the crease to create dimension and contour, its soft and versatile brush head can also be used for the full lid or precision highlighting.

Concealer Brush With minimal product absorption, this is the perfect tool to achieve a smooth application in small, precise areas of the face such as under the eyes, sides of the nose, or pinpoint concealing.

Foundation Brush This flat-faced, synthetic brush will deliver smooth application of liquid base products with no absorption so you can achieve a flawless finish.
Eyeliner/ Brow Brush This dual-ended brush is a must-have for your makeup bag. Use it to line the lips, eyes, or brows to create a clean, put-together look in a flash.

Unknown writes, "Hi, Jennifer! I was listening to a podcast about anxiety with my husband last night. He's a counselor and I have a business helping families simplify at home, so this is a topic we both share a great interest in. The discussion included ways to take your body from the sympathetic state (fight or flight) to a more relaxed parasympathetic state. One of the ways was through listening to music with seventy beats per minute, such as classical music. In fact, studies show that your heart will beat in time with classical music! It's that fascinating?! It made me think of your classical music advocacy. :) "

Unknown, that is fascinating! I knew that Classical music was calming and a stress reducer for me but it's fun to hear the science behind it too. I will mention your comment in an upcoming video I am doing on stress. Thank you!

I hope you enjoyed today's makeup look. I would love to hear any makeup tips you have been enjoying this spring. I'll see you soon!

Spring Glowy Le No Makeup Look | CC Cream + Highlighter

6:50 AM 1 Comments

Spring is here and I have enjoyed switching up my makeup routine recently. I like to move to tinted moisturizers and BB or CC creams in the spring/ summer seasons as they are lighter than the heavier foundations I use in the fall/ winter.

I've been testing the Osmosis makeup line, which is available on Amazon luxury and really like it. Their mineral makeup is gluten and paraben free.

I have particularly enjoyed using their CC cream, which blends and melts into the skin. It's great! I also love their highlighter, which I have been using on top of my cheek bones to give my skin a glowy look for spring.

Here is more information on the makeup. The italicized words are the descriptions from Osmosis and my take follows.

Osmosis cc cream in warm Osmosis Colour CC Cream helps you achieve a flawless look without caking on your makeup. UV filters help prevent sun damage while simultaneously diffusing discoloration. Its lightweight, creamy formula features natural color-correcting mineral pigments to even your complexion. This CC cream is great and so easy to use. I find it to be very moisturizing. This gives very light coverage. I have linked my color from Amazon above, but you can also check out the whole range on Osmosis' website.

translucent finishing powder Finishing Powder is a colorless mineral powder to set makeup and help ensure a flawless. Gluten and parabenFree, Talc-free and full of antioxidants for an all-natural approach to mineral makeup. This is a lovely mineral finishing powder.

eye shadow trio in spice berry A compact trio of shimmering eye shadows for easy contouring of the eyes. I chose this to compliment my green eyes and I really like the colors.

eye pencil in brown A creamy eye pencil that is quick-drying, smudge proof, and water resistant for beautiful long lasting wear. This Mechanical Eye Pencil glides on smooth with a bold color variety of colors. I like that this pencil is moisturizing and doesn't dry out.

curling mascara in black Osmosis Curling Mascara utilizes a curved Cobra head brush to deliver a natural curl to the lashes. This mascara is great. I love the curling wand! I would love to see this in burgundy, however.

bronzer in South Beach Osmosis Bronzer is perfect for contouring cheeks, nose, and eyes. Add bronzer to center of eyelid to bring out green, blue or light eye colors. Although I didn't do this in the video, I have been trying the bronzer on my eyelids and it looks great! A fun tip.

highlighting quad Four luminous hues in one convenient palette to light up your complexion. Brilliant and lustrous with vitamin E and Moringa Seed Oil for nourishing benefits. Swirl a blend of all 4 shades or choose individual colors for different areas to provide a luminous glow. This is an excellent highlighter and I like that you have the option to use one color or blend combinations. It provides a very natural hue.

TIP: Each shade of the palette may be used individually.

• BRONZE – Use as a shimmery bronzer or to add a glow to the skin

• ROSE – A pretty, pink poppy blush, use on lower lip to make it appear larger

• PEARL – Apply in the inner corner of the eyes to make them appear brighter, then blend at the top of the cupid’s bow for an enhanced, larger lip

• GOLD – Place in the center of the lid to make the eyes appear larger

blush in summer rose Osmosis Blush is a highly pigmented, all-natural Mineral Makeup offered in a wide range of colors. Gluten and paraben free. I love this pretty blush color and it lasts well on the cheeks.

lip gloss in bare moderate shine Lip Gloss with a sheer tint of color to add a splash of life to the lips for a natural look. Gluten and paraben free. This shade provides a pretty peach color.

Natural & Organic Makeup Tutorial | Natural Home with Jennifer

6:45 AM 4 Comments

On today's Natural Home with Jennifer, I'm doing a le no makeup look tutorial using mostly natural and organic makeup. Today, I'm featuring Elina organics makeup.

Elina Organics makeup products are 100% natural, contain Pearl Powder and Zinc Oxide for all day sun protection. Products are free of Talc and other toxic chemicals. They contain very minimal ingredients, making it perfect for even the most sensitive complexion.

The makeup will not accentuate or clog your pores. It will infuse your skin with skin nourishing and protecting amino acids, vitamins, and probiotics. You are able to achieve different levels of coverage from almost translucent to complete concealing.

Here are links to the makeup used:

Sun Shelter tinted moisturizer, crushed pearl powder foundation (I used medium), anti-wrinkle eyeshadow in espresso, anti-wrinkle eyeshadow in raspberry latte, and all natural mascara.

The tinted moisturizer goes on sheer, but still has great coverage. It feels light on the skin and moisturizes well. It is truly the star of the show.

I love the eyeshadows too. They start off as a cream and finish as a powder and last all day. I even used them without applying primer first and they last all day without creasing. The crushed pearl powder foundation works beautifully and I was very pleasantly surprised by the mascara. All in all, this is an excellent organic makeup line.

Elina organics also sent me the natural lash growth serum with peptides, which reportedly aides in lash growth. I haven't used this long enough to comment on whether or not it works. I can come back and let you know.

Other makeup used in the video (not organic)
bareMinerals concealer
Mac mineralize blush in warm soul
bareMinerals lipgloss in hype (I use this over the Elina organics lip color, which is too light for me)

I hope you enjoy the tutorial in today's video. If you have any requests for future Natural Home with Jennifer videos, please let me know. If you have a great natural and organic makeup line you use, please share in the comments. Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see you on Monday.

Thank you for your comments on Monday's birth story video and blogpost. I absolutely loved hearing the stories you had to share about your own birthing experiences. I honestly laughed and felt so moved at so many of your stories. I would like to feature all of you as comment of the week! Nadege received many thumbs up on the YouTube video for her observation: "Congrats to you and the entire family. I have given birth to 4 children and my opinion is that even if you’re “prepared” it is still very painful. Prayer is always good. Women are so very strong."

Nadege, I couldn't agree more. Women are so very strong. It's truly amazing what our bodies are capable of.

I hope you enjoy today's video. I would love to know your tips and tricks for looking more awake when you are dealing with limited sleep. Your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

See you tomorrow for a new Natural Home with Jennifer.
