The Clueless Gardeners Pick Their Pumpkins

Last fall when my daughters were carving pumpkins, they casually tossed the seeds into our side yard. We were amazed several months later when a rather large and substantial pumpkin patch formed!

We grew six plump pumpkins on accident and were excited to finally pick them.

I read an excerpt from this fall poem by John Updike:

A Child's Calendar
November
by John Updike

The striped and shapely
Maple grieves
The loss of her
Departed leaves

The ground is hard
As hard as stone.
The year is old.
The birds are flown.

And yet the world,
Nevertheless,
Displays a certain loveliness--

The beauty of
The bone. Tall God
Must see our souls
This way, and nod.

Give thanks: we do,
Each in his place
Around the table
During grace.

I hope you enjoy today's video where we pick our accidental pumpkins.

I think that "The Clueless Gardeners" is my favorite series of posts. It reminds me of when my husband and I were also clueless gardeners several years back. (Truth be told, we can still be a bit clueless at times. There is always something to learn.) I love seeing Ben and the kids; such a lovely family!

Jennifer,
This was a sweet video of your precious family! Thank you also for the delightful fall poem. I noticed a few differences between the poem as you read it aloud and how you transcribed it. I am guessing that how you read it aloud is the correct version?
Thanks again,
Alexandra (Ladylike)

HI, Jennifer- What a fun video! My family has also grown accidental pumpkins, and last year we had an accidental acorn squash plant that stretched for 20 feet across our yard. I can't help thinking how God has a sense of humor, and how he delights in sending us little surprises like this. Enjoy your pumpkins and your beautiful family!

This is one of my absolute favorite videos of all times. It conveys the warmth and beauty of family, the precious and playful memories of the seasons and the gift of learning and knowledge from the pumpkin harvesting to the reading of the beautiful poem by John Updike. You wrapped this all in love and gratitude! This was simply the best. Thank you for sharing your heart, Jennifer. XO
