Homemaking: A Week in the Life | The Pleasure of Everyday Routines

“You may think that being chic has nothing to do with the most insignificant and mundane moments of the day. Moments like preparing your meals, emptying the dishwasher, and paying bills. But the secret is: those moments aren’t insignificant. Au contraire. They are very significant. That’s right—if you can change your attitude about making the pasta sauce, choosing your clothes for the day, folding the laundry, setting the table, or dealing with the incoming mail, you can completely change your life.”
― a quote from my book, At Home with Madame Chic: Becoming a Connoisseur of Daily Life

Welcome to a new homemaking: a week in the life. In today's episode, I'm cooking dinner, growing potatoes, enjoying breakfast, and looking after the home (with lots of tea breaks in between).

I truly believe that joy at home is all about perspective. If we frame our day with enjoyable routines and seek the pleasures of the morning, afternoon, and evening, we can enjoy our everyday life... even the most mundane parts.

I have really enjoyed spending time outside in the late afternoon. We like to have dinner outside and afterwards will spend up to two hours in the garden. I'll give you a garden update soon. The potatoes we are growing in bags are really taking off. This is so surprising and exciting to me (it's the little things!)

Also, I experimented making jam tarts for tea. I will share the recipe with you in an upcoming afternoon tea video so stay tuned for that. In the meantime I hope you enjoy today's video.

Hey! I just found your blog the other week, and I'm loving it so far! You'll be happy to know that you've inspired me to start getting dressed in real clothes every day, ha ha--I've been a stay-at-home mom for the last four years, and let's just say that I've always found it a struggle to get dressed unless I was going somewhere. Now, during the pandemic, it was getting even harder. But you've inspired me to get ready every single day---hair, makeup, real clothes!--and it really has given me an extra boost of motivation to tackle whatever the day ahead brings.

Excited to check out the video!

Hi Jennifer

You are such an inspiration. You make housekeeping and cleaning charming. Thank you for motivating me and making me feel blessed especially when I am doing the mundane tasks which go unnoticed in my home.

Hi Jennifer,
Greetings from Australia. I have read all your books and have been a regular visitor to your blog for a long time, but this is my first time reaching out to say hello.
I love your videos, they fill me with joy and inspire me.
I am transitioning to home schooling (grades 1, 2 and 6) and would really love to see what your day is like juggling your children, home schooling and keeping your home clean and well ordered.
I love being a home keeper and feel that this important job is so under valued and over looked. I am worried how I am going to handle the transition. I am nervous but so excited for this new chapter in our lives. Any advice would be so gratefully received.
Kind regards

Deidre- thank you so much! I appreciate that!

Bianca- thank you! I probably will never do a homeschool day in the life as I like to protect the children's privacy... but I will likely to an end-of-year recap like I did last year... stay tuned! Thank you!

Infinifable- Thank you so much!

What a lovely video! I love your homemaking series. On this day, beautiful roses, tea, and daily routines shared in such a thoughtful manner, really lifted my spirits and had me doing my own work with a little more “pep in my step”. :)
