Intermittent Fasting Weight Loss | 5 Surprising Observations

 


I've been following the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting for 20 months now and have noticed some surprising observations. I'm sharing those with you in today's video.

The first observation: I am not hungry first thing in the morning. When you begin intermittent fasting, you think you're going to wake up starving since you fasted after dinner and through the night, but I have found the opposite to be true. 

The second observation: Long-term intermittent fasting makes you want to eat healthful foods. Because intermittent fasting is about when you eat rather than what you eat, some people think they can eat junk food during their eating window. This might happen some days, but generally, I find that my cravings have altered and now I crave really clean meals. 

The third observation: Because you clean up your diet significantly, you might lose more weight than you anticipated losing. This can be good or bad, depending on your unique situation. I have strangely lost a few more pounds this month, going from 116 lbs to 112 lbs without changing anything in my routine (for context, I am 5'5 1/2") My doctor recommend I add more healthy fats back into my diet: nuts, whole eggs, avocados, dark chocolate, fatty fish, etc. 

The fourth observation: Your skin might improve. I'm very happy with my skin lately and I am not sure if it is because of intermittent fasting, but my skin is the healthiest it's been my whole life. 

The fifth observation: Intermittent fasting might alter your eating habits dramatically. This can be good or bad, depending on your situation. Because I have stopped snacking after dinner, I am no longer able to eat late at night without getting a stomach ache. Occasionally we will go out to dinner or eat a late meal with family and friends and my body lets me know it's unhappy. All these points are worth weighing before you decide to embark on intermittent fasting.

Hi Jennifer! I’ve seen much of your observations on myself too. I don’t wake up hungry, I crave high quality meals, my complexion is better than ever (I’m 41 too) and if I eat after my eating window (because of a social events most of the time) I find that my body doesn’t do well with that anymore. The only thing I have not experienced is the dramatic weight loss. At first I lost about 5 pounds (that’s what I had to loose)… but then I gained them back. As I was eating healthy, exercising, and doing IF I was puzzled as why I was gaining weight and not feeling great at all. I went to the gyn and discovered I have uterine fibroids and pelvic congestion syndrome…. So that explains the weight issues. I’m on medical treatment right now and with dietary indications, but still on IF, to solve my gyn issues. I guess IF gave me a clear understanding that something was going wrong. I’m glad I’m more atuned with my body. Thanks for sharing you story. :)

Hi Jennifer,

I find your videos on IF the most concise, honest, and informative. Thank you for continuing to update us on your IF journey. I'm really curious how you do with IF as you enter menopause. I hear conflicting information on whether IF is helpful in menopause, especially with weight loss. Some say it's possible, others say no matter what they've tried, including IF, nothing has helped to budge their weight. I hate to believe that that is true. Have you heard from menopausal women who have had success with IF? I don't know if you're interested, but it would be nice if you could find a way to address, more in depth, IF and menopause for that demographic of your viewers. Thank you!

Forgot to specify above, information about IF and menopause for women NOT using HRT. I have found it frustrating watching videos/reading blogs about women in menopause who talk about weight loss in menopause (you just need to do this...blah, blah, blah), only to find out, after persistent questioning from their audience, that they are on HRT. Weight loss in menopause while on HRT is a completely difference experience than for those of us who are not using HRT.

Sorry for all the comments, but I wanted to say something else. I've noticed, in reading through the comments on your fasting videos, some people commenting on how dangerous fasting is, how it messed up the adrenals, metabolism, etc. It's a bit frustrating that they don't give more details about their fasting experience because I would bet anything that they did a low carb/keto fast, or didn't eat enough, doing OMAD (without enough calories), or something along those lines. From what I've read about fasting, women who don't have a good experience, don't have a good experience because they don't eat enough carbs, which is crucial for our hormones, and/or don't eat enough, which also negatively affects hormones. Because you have been honest and open with what you are doing, and its effects, if you start to have problems then I would be open to the consideration of needing to do things differently. Until then, without more information, I'm going to continue to assume that those who are having negative experiences from IF are doing it in an unhealthy way.
