Cottagecore Fashion Aesthetic, Princess Beatrice's Wedding Dress | 3 Articles on Dress

6:56 AM 3 Comments

Welcome to a new 3 Articles on Dress. We are exploring the Cottagecore fashion aesthetic, Princess Beatrice's wedding dress on loan from the Queen, and Vogue's suggestion that all we really need is a day dress.

⚜️ The first article discusses the Cottagecore fashion aesthetic that is becoming increasingly popular on social media. When I released my Grandmillennial video, many people suggested that the Granmillennial style is a derivative of Cottagecore. So let's explore this aesthetic in today's video.

Here are three Instagram accounts to explore that represent Cottagecore fashion beautifully.

A day filled with warm sunshine, tall grasses & trees swaying in the breeze, large open fields under a blue sky with the mountains looking down into the valleys. Wildflowers picked from the field & fresh blueberry pastries in old wicker baskets. Linen dresses the color of marigolds & linen aprons. Loose braids & pretty bows. Pressed flowers & notes scribbled in antique books. Twirling among the meadows while the fabric of your dress catches the wind. Picking & eating fresh berries straight from the bush. The smell of fresh grass. You see dragonflies with glass wings perched on branches, bees cradling flowers, & butterflies caressing the leaves. Soft white blankets & laying on your back looking up as the clouds pass by. You assume the point of view of the flowers & you watch as the golden glow of the sunset kisses your skin & you think to yourself “the flowers have the best view of the heavens.” 🌿✨This or That✨🌿: 🌞sunshine or stardust💫? 🍫chocolate or honey🍯? 🌼daisies or sunflowers🌻? 💛 yellow or pink💗? #quietthyme

Things I want to do in the next few weeks. Collect some wild roses that are growing near my house. There are bushes and bushes of them. Gather the giant pink poppy heads that are growing wildly nearby also to get the seed. Visit a rose garden I have been longing to for a while. Adventure in the flax field with a long flowery dress on and my books. Have an evening birthday picnic next week at the wood garden (and make and wear a floral crown!). Find an old Polaroid camera and film to capture our summer days amongst flowers and forests. Start up my vintage shop again. Go on a huge charity shop and vintage shop adventure. Write some stories. Read my favourite book again. Lie down in a wheat field and watch the clouds. Hold my little girls tightly and hug them as much as I can 🌸 #gingerlillytea

I would love to know what you think about the Cottagecore style. Do you relate to this aesthetic?

⚜️ The next article comes from Town & Country Magazine and explores Princess Beatrice's wedding dress on loan from the Queen.

Princess Beatrice married her fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in Windsor wearing a slightly altered dress on loan from Queen Elizabeth. The dress was designed by Norman Hartnell and was made from Peau De Soie taffeta and organza, trimmed with Duchess satin, and encrusted with diamanté. I love that Princess Beatrice went vintage with her dress and thought she looked like a beautiful Princess bride. What did you think of the dress?

⚜️ And finally, with the changes in our social lives that are taking place throughout the worldwide pandemic, Vogue recommends that all you truly need is a great day dress.

I have enjoyed this way of dressing for some time. A good day dress can be dressed up to work beautifully for fancier events and dressed down for everyday wear. The struggle, I believe, lies in whether the wearer feels too "fancy" wearing the dress on a regular basis. The Daily Connoisseur community here is used to dressing well each day. You can find support from our community and think of us and smile when someone asks you, "Why are you so dressed up? Where are you going?" :)

I hope you enjoy the articles discussed in today's video. I would love to know your thoughts on the articles featured.

Sarah, I would laugh too if I didn't want to cry... haha! It's easy to get cooking burn-out, but I hope my video on Monday helped with that.

A Highly Unusual Day in the Life: Extreme Hair and Makeup Transformation

7:35 AM 7 Comments

Welcome to another highly unusual day in my life...

This week I had a photoshoot for a very exciting project that is coming up, and today I take you along with me. Whenever you have the opportunity to have your makeup and hair done by a professional, I recommend that you not only ask them questions on the best products and techniques for yourself, but to also film it so you can replay and watch how they apply your makeup.

Ok, I look like a deer in headlights in this photo, but it's a good close-up still shot from the video that shows the makeup really well...

Today's video is a treat because you get to see the major photo-ready transformation I underwent, including eyelashes and contouring, which are two things I normally do not do.

The makeup look is quite extreme, but it's meant to highlight the face beautifully in photos, and Jackie, my makeup artist, did an amazing job. Thank you, Jackie!

Jackie used a Beauty Blender-like sponge to apply my makeup. I recently purchased these dupes on Amazon and am very happy with them. They are a great price too.

Comment of the Week
Carolyn writes, "I love time management and organization books and articles. Over the years I have read numerous times that the most important thing a homemaker can do in managing their home is meal planning. I have found it takes stress from my days when I have a plan. An additional benefit is saving money because you are buying what you need, not random food items. Leftovers (or planned overs) also means some days with little food prep. Thank you for being a mentor in the area of homemaking for so many of us."

Carolyn, I love time management books too. You are so correct, there are many benefits to meal planning. I'm glad you enjoyed Monday's video!

I hope you enjoyed today's fun makeover transformation. I will see you this weekend for a new 3 Articles on Dress.

Meal Planning is a Homemaker MUST + Our Dinners of the Week

5:09 AM 12 Comments

Meal planning is a homemaker must. Through the years, I've gone for long periods of time when I was on top of meal planning, and long periods of burn-out where I didn't meal plan at all. And I can definitely say that meal planning helps my life go more smoothly, it's better for our food budget, and I end up producing more appealing meals that the whole family actually enjoy.

In today's video I'm sharing the meals we made this past week. I write them down on this magnetic meal planning paper pad and place it on the fridge. I always get the days wrong (as you will see), but it's helpful to have a meal plan written down, as well as a grocery list. To give you an idea on what we spend on groceries, our bill for this week, which included all of the ingredients I needed to make the meals, plus breakfast items, snacks for the kids, and other fresh produce, ended up being $170. This is a great price for a family of six considering that many of the items I bought (milk, eggs, etc.) would last for more than one week as well.

The potato gratin recipe comes from William & Sonoma's Bride and Groom cookbook, the chicken roll-up recipe was one I originally found on Kristin Stepp's channel and she got it from Plain Chicken (links below). The Linguini with Clams (pantry staple) is from All Recipes. I will also leave my versions of the recipes down below as I did alter some of them a bit.

Featured in the video:

Potato Gratin

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 tsp butter (room temp.)
  • 2 lb russet potatoes
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cup half and half
  • 1 tsp salt
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a 2 quart baking or gratin dish with the butter. Peel the potatoes and cut into slices around 1/8 inch thick. (You can also use a mandolin.) Crush the garlic and add into the pot along with the potatoes, cream, half and half, salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil and then lower the temperature and cook for around 10 minutes. Transfer the potatoes to your greased baking dish and cook in the oven for another 15 to 20 minutes.

Chicken Piccata

Ingredients:

  • 4 thin boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Flour for dredging
  • 4 Tbs unsalted butter
  • 2 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • juice from 2 lemons
  • 1/4 cup capers
  • 2 Tbs parsley, chopped

Instructions:

  1. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper. Dredge the chicken in the flour to coat it lightly. In a large pan, melt 2 Tbs. butter and 2 Tbs. olive oil. Add the chicken and cook until brown (roughly 3 minutes on each side). Transfer the chicken to a plate. Add the broth, lemon juice, and capers to the same pan. Bring this to a boil, scraping up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Return the chicken to the pan and cook until it is fully cooked through (about 5 minutes). Transfer the chicken to a platter. Stir the remaining 2 Tbs. butter into the sauce. Pour the sauce over the chicken and garnish with parsley.

  • 1 Tbs olive oil
  • 1 Tbs butter
  • salt and pepper
Crabmeat topping
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 oz. butter, melted
  • 1 Tbs mustard
  • 1 egg
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 Tbs. Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 lb crab meat
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.  Mix all of the topping ingredients. Heat the olive oil and butter in your roasting pan in the oven. Place the salmon in the pan and top with the crab mixture. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

The tacos are pretty self-explanatory. I like to make taco meat in large batches and freeze it (ground beef or ground turkey cooked with taco seasoning according to the package directions). Then I freeze it. I have cooked mine in the Instant Pot.

The Chicken Roll-up recipe can be found on Plain Chicken. I initially discovered it on Kristin Stepp's YouTube channel.

The Linguini with Clams recipe can be found here.

The Peach Crisp recipe can be found here.

The Chic Assignment, August 2020

6:36 AM 3 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for August, 2020.

⚜️Chic Assignment no. 1 Elgar's Nimrod

Sir Edward William Elgar (1857-1934) was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. We are going to listen to a performance of Elgar's Nimrod this month. Here is a great article on Classic FM: A detailed explanation of why Elgar’s Nimrod makes you break down in uncontrollable tears.

The performance I'm recommending is this brilliant rendition by Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

We will learn more about Elgar at the Chic Assignment Check-in.

⚜️Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the art of Carl Larsson

Carl Olof Larsson was a Swedish painter (1853-1919) representative of the Arts and Crafts movement. His many paintings include oils, watercolors, and frescoes. He is principally known for his watercolors of idyllic family life. You can see more of his works on WikiArt or check out this beautiful art book, A Home, which shares Larsson's works in beautiful print form.

⚜️Chic Assignment no. 3 Explore the art of meal planning
I have a video coming out on Monday all about how I meal plan. I'm also sharing dinners of the week. I hope that video inspires you to start meal planning in your own home if you don't already do so.

⚜️Chic Assignment no. 4 Start preparing your fall wardrobe
As the season is about to change, it's time to assess our summer wardrobes (winter wardrobes for our Southern Hemisphere friends). Take note of what worked, what didn't, what will return, and what needs to go and prepare your wardrobe for fall.

I hope you enjoy the assignments this month. Tag me on social media with #TheChicAssignment and keep us updated in the comments. I'll see you in the mid-month check-in!
