Mapp & Lucia Book Club Announcement

6:12 AM 2 Comments

Hello Daily Connoisseurs, we are going to complete the final installment of the Mapp & Lucia book club series this summer!

I have had such a lovely time participating in this book club with you! We are going to read the final two books in the series: The Worshipful Lucia (Also known as Lucia's progress) and Trouble for Lucia.

The Mapp & Lucia books by E.F. Benson are some of my favorite books. They are lesser known gems in the literary world with characters and satires that speak to our hearts as daily connoisseurs. I hope you will join us on this final installment. I am announcing it now so that you have plenty of time to read before we discuss them this summer. To see the previous Mapp and Lucia book club discussions click here and here.

If you are new to this book club and would like to get caught up, here are the books in order:

Queen Lucia (1920)
Miss Mapp (1922)
Lucia in London (1927)
Mapp and Lucia (1931)
Lucia's Progress (1935) (published in the U.S. as The Worshipful Lucia)
Trouble for Lucia (1939)

You can find the books in paperback form and also many can be heard as audio books. They are wonderful to listen to. I am leaving a link to audible here, or you can try to find them from your local library.

I hope you have a lovely weekend. I'll see you on Monday!

With love,

Jennifer

Mapp and Lucia Book Club LIVE

3:14 PM 0 Comments

Hello dear readers,

Thank you for joining me for the next installment of the Mapp and Lucia book club. We had so much to get to and I had a wonderful time chatting about the next two books in the series, Lucia in London and Mapp and Lucia. I apologize that this livestream was plagued with technical difficulties again. We had trouble with audio as well as picture (I look quite squashed and blurry), but overall we did get to chat about both of the books. I hope you enjoy the discussion in today's video. I promise to work on my livestreaming skills and will hopefully improve them for next time! :)

The video of the Live Chat is above. If you were unable to make it live, you can simply watch the chat here or on YouTube. I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your additional comments on all of the points that were made.

As we close the next section of the book club, I would love to know... Who is your favorite character in the series? Who is the most despicable? What was your favorite part in each book? What were your least favorite parts? Let us know in the comment section, and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

We will continue the book club with the next two (and final) books in the series, Worshipful Lucia and Trouble for Lucia.

I will give you plenty of time to read the next two books and will most likely discuss them in the new year. Until then... *Au Reservoir!*

Mapp and Lucia Book Club Part 3 | Your Comments Discussed

6:28 AM 3 Comments

Part 3 of the Mapp and Lucia Book Club continues today. I'm sharing your comments and answering your questions. What part of polite society from Mapp & Lucia's day would I like to bring back? Who would I want to have lunch with? What happens when someone steps out of their social "rank"? This and so much more is discussed in today's video.

These comments were chosen from my post a few weeks ago, calling on your questions. Since the book clubs have aired, I have also received many insightful comments. Be sure to check out the comment section on both the blog and YouTube channel. And while I was not able to get to everyone's comments in today's video, I do want to thank everyone for participating in the book club!

We will continue the book club by reading the next two books in the series: Lucia in London and (my favorite!) Mapp and Lucia. We will most likely discuss these books in mid-fall, so you have plenty of time to read or listen to them.

*In today's video, I'm drinking coffee out of my favorite Emma Bridgewater Union Jack mug.

I will be joining fellow New York Times bestselling authors, Eleanor Brown and Maggie Shipstead this Saturday, July 15th, 5pm at Chevalier's Bookstore in Los Angeles for a book signing, Q&A and discussion. I hope to see you there!

Comment of the Week
Ann C. writes:
Miss Mapp scared me a little at first with her waspish wit! I was ready to go back to Riseholme, even if it meant listening to more of Lucia's preenings! But as I went along, whenever a new character was introduced, I found myself looking forward to hearing her "take" on them. She was always pretty much accurate -- and funny! I loved it when she referred to Mrs. Poppit and Mr. Wyse as "the young couple" and how they "went out to the front lawn to look at the orchid" (referring to their very obvious attempts to be alone). I noticed that both Mapp and Lucia had a female friend with whom they had a sort of sibling rivalry, one-upsmanship relationship. Mapp had Diva, Lucia had Daisy. Love your comment about how they managed to stay civil, even during an argument, unlike people today. So true! Also, how about the shock registered by Miss Mapp when the Captain and the Major got a little sassy with her when they were in their cups? Miss Mapp's generation certainly expected a certain level of gentlemanly behavior from men -- which I think women in general today have lost (though that is no doubt at least partly our own fault). Anyway, I loved how Miss Mapp had a little crush on the Major -- and that, at the end of the story, she had become his golf partner! Thank you for introducing me to these charming stories, Jennifer!

Hello Ann, I loved your observations of Miss Mapp and her comrades! I observed the gentlemanly behavior as well. It made Major Benjy very endearing!

Thank you for joining me for this final (for now) part of the #MappandLuciaBookClub . I had so much fun discussing these books with you! As mentioned, we will continue with the series, but not likely until the fall. See you on Thursday for a curling iron tutorial...

Mapp & Lucia Book Club | Part 2 | Miss Mapp

6:14 AM 6 Comments

Part two of our Mapp & Lucia book club continues today, with Miss Mapp by E.F. Benson. In today's video I explain why this is my favorite book of the two we have discussed and many of my observations comparing life in the 1920s to modern day.

Here are some of the key characters in Miss Mapp:

Elizabeth Mapp- loves to peer out her garden window and spy on the inhabitants of Tilling. Much like Lucia, she thinks very highly of herself and often gets into trouble because of this

Major Benjy- A bachelor, retired military man and Miss Mapp's love interest

Captain Puffin- Major Benjy's best friend

Diva Plaistow- Miss Mapp's friend, the Ethel to Miss Mapp's Lucy

Miss Susan Poppit- Miss Mapp's rival

Today, I discuss several of my favorite episodes in the book, including the red currant fool debacle, the Diva dress mess, Major Benjy's duel and Susan Poppit's elaborate (and according to Miss Mapp, vulgar) bridge buffet.

I hope you enjoy my observations in today's video. I look forward to discussing your comments in the next installment of the book club!

Comment of the Week
Katrin writes:
There are four things that I love about this book club:
First of all, the books themselves. As Viola Schneider said, I love the slow pace and how the characters and stories unfold. Secondly, your videos really provide food for thought, for example the connection to our modern celebrity culture. Thirdly, your readers' comments are so interesting that I want to enter a discussion with each one of them.
Last but not least, through the books, the videos, and the comments, I really slow down. After that I always feel relaxed and energized at the same time. So thank you for that, especially now that I know that it is a "frenzy" for you.

Hi Katrin, I'm so happy you like the format of the book club. I love to read the comment section too. Honestly, the comments are my favorite part! :)

See you on Thursday for a "shop with me" video and see you for part 3 of the book club next Monday!

I hope you have a wonderful independence day celebration tomorrow!
