Bikini Alternatives + Summer Ten-Item Capsule Wardrobe Updates

10:35 AM 7 Comments

Bikinis and one-piece bathing suits... are they the only options we have to splash about in this summer? Let's explore bathing suit alternatives that still keep you looking chic.

In today's video I discuss various bathing suit styles that are ideal for being active and out in the sun all day.

Let's have a look first at the tankini option. Tankinis are great because they can be paired with whatever bottom style you like... traditional swimsuit bottoms, skirt bottoms, or short bottoms. There is often ruching in the tummy area and support in the bust. I love this tankini from Lands' End paired with this mini skirt option. To check out all of Lands' End's swim suit options, click here

If you plan to be in the hot sun all day and want to protect your skin, or if you are going to be very active (think waterpark, or beach volley ball) consider a rash guard. These come in varying sleeve lengths and give your skin extra protection from the sun. I love this rash guard that is inspired by the classic Breton stripe. I am wearing it with beach shorts.

Other great resources for chic bathing suit coverups and accessories is Mer Sea & Co resort

I will be retiring the Rachel Pally Marion dress as the long-sleeves are not ideal for the hot summer weather. That will be packed away and brought out next spring. To replace it is this gorgeous Penelope dress by SKYE (Jennifer20 for 20% off). It's gauzy, and white and I have been living in it this summer. I am wearing the dress with The Spanish Sandal Co. tan nubuck sandals. JEN10 for 10% off

The Penelope dress is wrinkle-resistant, washes well, as does all of my SKYE dresses, and has a beautiful button detail that cinches in at the waist. Here is a preview of some of SKYE's beautiful 18K gold and pearl jewelry collection for summer:

Estelle long layered clover and pearl necklace Jennifer20 for 20% off This necklace is long and can be layered for a fuller look. It has SKYE signature pearls and elegant crystal clovers that remind me of
Van Cleef & Arpels.

The Lena pearl choker necklace  Jennifer20 for 20% off is delicate and charming in a vintage way.

The Therese 18K gold freshwater pearl bracelet is a delicate delight. I love the dainty design of this bracelet! Jennifer20 for 20% off.

Comment of the Week
On Monday's etiquette video, Mia writes, "I once had a great conversation with a disabled veteran that I’d just met at a business networking event about SASQUATCH. 😂 The man had been invited to an area where they film Finding Sasquatch, and we laughed as he shared “Squatch” stories. To this day I still don’t know if he thinks Sasquatch is real, but we text and share pictures each time we see something related. It’s so fun. Even my husband and daughter send him selfies with anything Sasquatch related."

Dear Mia, this is the best part about making a new friend and getting to know someone. It's those sasquatch moments where you can think of the other person and smile :) Thanks for sharing!

I hope you enjoyed today's video. I would love to know... what types of bathing suits do you like to wear? Have you updated your wardrobe for the change in season? What type of jewelry do you like to wear in the summer months? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

It might seem a little late to be talking about New Years goals, but I’m of the mindset that goals can and should be set at any time and that you don’t need a big reason to start something new. A couple weeks into January, I realized that I hadn’t really given any thought to my goals for the year. With a newborn, it wasn’t surprising to me. Since this year is going to be very different, in terms of free time, in the beginning versus the end, I decided that I wanted to have one focus each month of this year, instead of a few goals for the entire year. This way, I can dedicate more energy to my goals in the months that are less full. My goal for January is rest. Sometimes it is really hard to truly rest, especially when you need it. I’ve been reminding myself to accept help when it is offered, to ask for help when it is needed, to choose to rest instead of pursue a hobby or passion (knowing that I will be able to fulfill those desires again soon), to let those I love take care of me instead of always taking care of others, to sleep when I have the opportunity, and to cherish these early days being a mom to two beautiful girls. What are you focusing on this month? . . . . . . . #yxeblog #saskblog #yxemom #yxebaby #fourthtrimester #newyearsgoals #newyearsresolutions #rest #January #themotherhoodcorner #realmomlife #momcommunity #lifewithkids #motherhoodunited #lessonsfrommadamechic #madamechic #goalsetting #journalling #yxecoffeeclub

Comment of the Week
Just Today writes, "Hello Jennifer, about 2 years ago, I picked up your book called, "Madame Chic" for my daughter. Like all the other books I buy her, it went into another part of the house, probably never to be seen again by her (no offence)...or so I thought. As I ventured out into my place of solitude, which happens to be my backyard these days, I decided to grab a book from that shelf in the other part of the house. Sitting quite comfortably in my cozy chair with the book about to open, I can honestly tell you that I didn't leave that spot until I finished reading the entire book! I couldn't stop!! It's like I went with you on your journey to Paris and although I've always been one to enjoy the finer things in life, you actually made me realize that I still need to continue to pamper myself and enjoy every aspect of my wonderful life, thus far. When I finished the last page, I immediately went right up to my daughter and handed her the book telling her she must read it. She's starting tonight and I can't wait to sit down with her, in our little backyard paradise, drinking lemonade, and conversing with each other about the wonderful contents of those pages! To now sit down at my computer and look up your YouTube channel and watch your video's, makes me now feel like I'm still on some type of wonderful journey with you. The feeling that you get when you take a big blanket out of a hot dryer on a cold winter day....that's the feeling and warmth I get from watching your video's. You are such a wonderful human being and quite the mentor to many of us ladies out here. I'm sure my daughter will feel the exact same way I do once she's completed your book. Thank you for being such a special addition to my life and my daughter's life....I'm sure she'll thank you one day too!!! 💖💖"

Wow! Your comment really blew me away. Your encouragement has meant so much to me. Thank you for your kind words and I hope your daughter enjoys the books too!

Thank you for joining me for today's video. I hope it provides ten-item wardrobe inspiration. I would love to know how your ten-item wardrobe is coming along. Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

Ten-Item Wardrobe Update and Summer Break

9:48 PM 30 Comments

Hello Dear Readers,

Congratulations to Lena, who won the LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE giveaway. Today I have a final video before I take my annual summer break from the blog. In it I answer a frequently asked question: How has my ten-item wardrobe fared this season and are there any changes?

This ten-item wardrobe has been my most favorite. As I have previously mentioned, every season you do the ten-item wardrobe you get closer and closer to honing in on your true style and the clothes you love to wear. I was recently speaking with my sister, who is trying the ten-item wardrobe for herself, and she told me that one of the most valuable things is she is definitely figuring out what she doesn't like to wear. This is valuable! Oftentimes when our closets are stuffed to the brim with clothes, we add so much confusion to our fashion identity and we just don't know what we like to wear. We're all over the place. With the ten-item wardrobe, because you are "stuck with" (for lack of a better term) the same small amount of clothing for a season, you learn pretty quickly what you like and you don't like. That's why each season, you eliminate mistakes and get closer to your true style.

There was one item of clothing, my Spanx jeans, that I found I rarely wore this spring/summer.

In fact, since March, I've only worn them 3 to 5 times! Essentially for the past few months I have been wearing a 9-Item wardrobe! Don't worry, I'm not changing the number on you. I decided to set the jeans aside (I'll most likely use them in fall/winter or I can bring them out if there is a cold-spell in the summer) and purchase a dress to fill the gap so that I am back to ten items.

Because I loved my black Garnet Hill dress so much...

I decided to purchase the same dress in navy polka-dot. The dress was on sale for significantly less than I paid for the black dress and I thought this would be a wise move. And it was! This dress is so comfortable and forgiving. I might keep both dresses on into the fall/ winter wardrobe as I believe I can layer them for colder weather. We will see. Here I am wearing the polka-dot dress last weekend visiting historic Victorian houses in San Diego.

Please check out this week's video for a more in-depth examination of my summer ten-item wardrobe experience. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Madame Chic Inspiring Thought
Be honest with yourself and figure out what you don't like to wear. Get rid of the clothes that just aren't you, even if they were expensive. Even if they were a gift. Even if you swear you might wear them one day. If they don't feel right, you won't wear them and you'll never feel comfortable in them. Have fun this summer purging your wardrobe.

Comment of the Week
Debbie S. writes:

Jennifer, I just wanted you to know that I'm learning so much from you. I'm 55 years old and my kids are grown and on their own, my youngest just graduated from college. The teen years were tough and I had become a little crabby with everything going on in our family. My kids were good kids but there was just so much commotion with all of their activities and their teen angst. I enjoy your Blog and your videos. They have reminded me to be kinder and gentler with everyone in my life. I kind of lost myself a little being a mom so thank you for helping me to refocus.

Love, love, love your clothing tips!

Debbie, thank you so much. As a mother of two kids I know how hard it can be to not lose your sense of self, especially during the difficult times. It is very important to have an outlet where you can express yourself and cultivate your interests so you don't lose yourself in the drama that can sometimes come from family life. Wishing you the very best!
