We Respond to Your Etiquette Conundrums | Ben and Jennifer Scott

6:44 AM 17 Comments

Thank you to everyone who sent in requests for today's etiquette video. I received hundreds of comments and letters through the blog, YouTube, social media and my contact form on the author website. Clearly the topic of modern etiquette resonates with so many people. You would not believe the stories we read! I have enough material for an entire year :) Ben and I could not address each question, but answered a variety of conundrums in today's video.

How do you handle the houseguest who is perpetually on their smartphone? What do you do when your theatre experience is sabotaged by a fellow audience member? What's the etiquette for grooming oneself in public? What should you say to a pregnant lady? How do you handle dogs at the dinner table? Is the wave of courtesy extinct? Find out our answers to all of these questions plus much, much more.

Lack of Professionalism at Work? Etiquette Chat

5:47 AM 16 Comments

Today's etiquette chat deals with the issue of professionalism at work (or lack thereof). I received two emails from readers with personal anecdotes regarding bad behavior at work.

In today's video I address the emails and weigh in with my own experiences. We end on a positive note with advice for young professionals.

My best professional etiquette advice is this: no matter what job you have, whether you love it or hate it, give it your all and do it to your best ability with a happy heart. Be professional always. Don't swear and don't over-share. Keep busy and stay off your phone. Think about what your boss is looking for and how you can better the company. You would be amazed at the doors that open for you.

A wonderful resource on etiquette and poise is my third book, Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic: Lessons in Everyday Etiquette.

I hope you enjoy the etiquette chat in today's video. I would love to hear your thoughts on all of the subjects discussed... be sure to chime in with your comment.

Monday's first ever Teatime with Jennifer: Meme Edition was so much fun! I loved reading all of your comments and which memes resonated with you the most. I have many favorite comments and here are two of them:

Gloria writes, "There is an Amish/Pennsylvania Dutch saying: "Kissing wears out; cooking don't."

Gloria- what a neat saying... and so true!

R.S. writes, "I always joke that I could be on my death bed and suddenly I'll hear the gentle turning of the door knob, and a little head will poke in (or maybe my husband's) and say, "I know you're dying, but have you thought about what's for dinner?" Thank you, Jennifer, for the laugh! Your videos make my day!

R.S., this made me laugh! Ha! :)

Thank you for joining me for today's etiquette chat. I would love to hear from you. Do you have any etiquette horror stories from work? Do you have any tips for our young professionals? Let us know and your comment could be comment of the week on the blog. See you tomorrow for a new Natural Home with Jennifer!

Carey M. writes, "Sorry to miss the live chat, but I am really enjoying the video now. I agree with everything you said! I have a couple of really great pieces of advice about gossip that I have heard over the years. My mom always says, “If they gossip with you, they will gossip about you.” A teacher/mentor I had used to teach that gossip is having a stated opinion about something you don’t have responsibility for. She said, “If you don’t have responsibility for it, don’t have opinion on it.” And lastly, never say anything about someone that you wouldn’t say to their face. All of these have helped me avoid gossip over the years."

Hi Carey, your mother has very sound advice. Thank you for sharing her words of wisdom with us!

Thank you for joining me today. I would love to hear your take on all of the etiquette topics discussed in this video. Please let me know what future live-stream topics you'd like to see on this channel.

See you on Thursday for an exciting jewelry giveaway.

Narcissistic Audience Members | Teatime with Jennifer + Giveaway Winner

5:49 AM 24 Comments

It's that time of year again! Time for recitals, performances and special ceremonies for our children. In today's Teatime with Jennifer, I have another etiquette horror story for you and discuss a trend that I am noticing lately: narcissistic audience members.

We have all seen them: people who disrupt performances because they are not thinking of others. Blocking other people's views with their recording devices, texting and talking loudly... these are just some of the offenses! As our society becomes more and more narcissistic, it is important for us to discuss these sometimes touchy subjects and realize that our actions matter and do affect other people. I hope you join me for today's chat and chime in with your thoughts in the comment section below!
