A Dress Code for Parents? | Teatime with Jennifer

6:03 AM 23 Comments

On today's Teatime with Jennifer we are discussing the viral story regarding the Houston principal who has instituted a dress code for parents at James Madison High School. (Read the original article here).

Several readers sent me this article knowing that one of the popular topics discussed on The Daily Connoisseur is look presentable always, which does not mean to look perfect or expensive, but rather presentable. I believe that this is so important for us as parents. We need to model dignified behavior for our children and part of that is looking the part.

The principal in Houston is (of course) receiving tremendous push-back on her stance. While I don't agree with all of it, I do applaud her for bringing to light this unpopular issue that, I believe, should be addressed.

Join me for today's Teatime with Jennifer and chime in with your own thoughts on the matter! I would love to hear from you. What have you noticed with regard to parents and dressing? Has the principal gone too far or do you agree with her? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

Answering Your Instagram Questions | Teatime with Jennifer

6:20 AM 6 Comments

I recently asked for your Teatime requests on Instagram and received so many varied requests, that I decided to answer them all (or almost all of them).

I was under the weather when I shot this video, so please accept my apologies. We chat about everything from how I buy the art for my home, to how to deal with children who talk back, to advice for college kids, to ideas for hostess gifts, to how to deal with children and screen time . I answer so many questions in today's video!

I promised to link many of the things I discussed in the video so I will link them all here:

📍Jose Trujillo has wonderful and affordable paintings on eBay. I also have bought antique paintings from Califauctions, Cathedral Fine Art, DelphiFineArt, and Unusual Finds

📍Laurie from Pride in Photos Beauty's channel This is in reference to the question on grey hair.

📍My Amazon store is where I link my favorite books as well as the baby items I actually use (plus so much more)

📍The necklace I'm wearing is by Ana Luisa NY (code Jennifer10 gives $10 off), The nail polish I'm wearing is Londontown Lemonade Pop (use code JenniferS for 25% off)

📍The flower arrangement is by Horchow and the candle I'm burning is Tokyo Citrus by Cellar Door Candles

📍My debt-free eCourse is linked here. On Monday I'm debuting my new eCourse. I'm so excited to share it with you!

📍Skillshare is the online learning resource where you can choose from over 25,000 classes to learn a new skill. If you have a skill, you could be a teacher on skillshare and earn an income from your class. It's a great resource, especially for those of us who like to stay sharp and refuse to be dumbed down :)

I hope you enjoyed today's video.

AnnaJH writes, Jennifer, I enjoy your chic assignments so much! I haven't read a non fiction book since October because I have felt too busy (but for some reason I have had time for my phone), but I decided to follow the chic assignments and now I read every day again! I rather have my children seeing me read a book than holding my phone.
For this months assignment I especially like the Monet assignment. There is a lovely childrens book called "Linnea in Monet's garden" by Christina Bjork. I will read it again with my children and enjoy the story and the paintings together them!

Thank you, Anna! I'm enjoying The Chic Assignments so much. I am so excited that they have inspired you to read more. The Monet book looks wonderful, I will have to check that out.

Thank you for joining me today. I hope you enjoyed this Teatime with Jennifer. I would love to hear your comments on all of the topics discussed. I'll see you tomorrow for my rebound with me video for March!

Love,

Jennifer

Teatime with Jennifer | Meme Edition!

6:04 AM 17 Comments

After a long day, sometimes you just need a good laugh. And sometimes that laugh verges on hysterics. Well, that's what happens with me in today's video, the first ever Teatime with Jennifer: Meme Edition!

Whenever I find a good meme, I save it. And in today's video, I'm sharing some of the funniest memes I've seen.

This meme isn't funny, but nostalgic. My great-grandmother's generation dressed like this. Dress sense has changed drastically this past century, hasn't it?

This is where I am right now. I don't need a fancy vacation, just a trip to the bathroom by myself, thank you very much!

You can be on time, or everyone can be wearing shoes. You can't have both! This was us two weeks ago at a field trip!

I want to be the mother who listens to her children, so I do. But sometimes those monologues about Ninjago go on for a long time...

We stopped watching television in order to be more efficient with our time... this meme illustrates the binge-watching culture we've become.

#Truth

Very good advice for young people: marry someone who knows (or is willing to learn) how to cook. I'm taking men and women here. It's a needed skill!

I lost it with this one.

This would never be Mr. Connoisseur as I don't take him shopping. Ever. But I know many husbands could probably relate to this meme!

You're welcome.

I'll just live in denial that we look like the top image and not the bottom.

This is what I imagine my YouTube hater looks like...

A very compelling reason to not throw in the towel...

I hope today's video has given you a good laugh. If you have a meme you'd like to share with me for a future Teatime with Jennifer: Meme edition, you can tag me with a photo on social media using the hashtag #teatimewithjennifer

Delighted on a Dime shares one of her favorite quotes from the Madame Chic books...
View this post on Instagram

I recently finished listening to two of Jennifer L. Scott’s (@dailyconnoisseur) books: Lessons from Madame Chic and At Home with Madame Chic. I enjoyed them both and thought they had some great takeaways. In her series, she discusses her time spent in Paris while studying abroad and the Parisian lifestyle that she learned from her host family. • A theme that she emphasizes throughout her writing is to simply appreciate the small mundane tasks in your daily life. It might sound silly, but try it. Change your mindset around these tasks. Find something small about them that can make them enjoyable. Use a soap or a cleaner you love that has a refreshing scent. Listen to relaxing music while you take on a chore. Make the intention to stop and eat your meals at a table without your phone or computer in front of you. Actually savor your food. Make time for regular self-care. Sip a cup of your favorite tea in the evening. Enjoy the things that you have - your nice dishes, clothes, jewelry, etc. - and don’t wait for a special occasion to use them. • I think that our mindset can be so powerful. I find that when I purposefully think about these little things, it definitely makes a positive impact in my day.✨

On last week's Ten-Item Wardrobe video, Eleanor writes, "Hi there Jennifer I have just started with my ten item wardrobe for the first time and have reduced my number of clothes from about 80+ pieces to about 36 pieces which include 10 core items and extras such as blazers, t-shirts, event pieces and shoes( all from my own wardrobe no new clothes).I must admit I love it cause it has given me a more calming experience everytime I get dressed in the morning now.I wear at least 1core item out of my ten item wardrobe and pair it with something from my extras.Something extraordinary has happened since I have started the new wardobe change , my husband and kids compliments me every day now on how nice I look!!! Some of my clothes I am not wearing now (winter clothes) have been packed away for next season I am from South Africa we have spring /summer weather at the moment Thank you for all your advice love it."

Eleanor, I loved hearing your ten-item wardrobe testimonial, especially your family's reaction to your change. Wonderful!

The Trouble with Social Media | Teatime with Jennifer

5:43 AM 16 Comments

Today's Teatime with Jennifer discusses a topic I've been wanting to address for awhile: the trouble with social media.

There are, of course, many good points to social media. It's a great way to promote your business. It's a wonderful way to stay connected to loved ones who live far away. It's a way to discuss current events and take the pulse of what people really think. There are many other benefits as well.

But what is the trouble with social media? Social media changes the way that we think and even act. It promotes envy and narcissism. It pulls us out of the present moment. Instead of enjoying the moment, we often feel that we need to share it. Social media changes the way we think about others, often for the worse. It is highly addictive and robs us of our time, making us less efficient. There are, of course, many other problems. I touch on many of these problems in today's video. I would love to know what you think...

On the Ten-Item Wardrobe eCourse, Jennifer K. writes, "I discovered you through reading your book "Polish Your Poise With Madame Chic" which I borrowed from the library. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am now following you on YouTube. You are an inspiration for me to help me reorganise my life now that my three children have grown and left home. I am starting with my clothing closet which has become ridiculously over full. You have given me a new purpose and I am very grateful for all the work and effort you do in communicating to other women of all ages around the world in helping us. Thank you."

Thank you, Jennifer! I'm excited to see where the ten-item wardrobe discovery takes you!

On the guestbook page for my author website, Amber writes:

I recently finished reading Lessons from Madame Chic and At Home with Madame Chic. These are the ways you’ve already changed my life:
-My adorable capsule wardrobe (I’m pregnant, so I donated all my ratty high school clothes and bought a couple dresses/shirts/leggings that will work during pregnancy and nursing).
-I always wear a cute outfit now while doing housework (with a necklace to feel extra chic). I feel adorably pregnant instead of like a tired whale
-No more plastic plates at the table! … except when I’m behind on dishes 🙂 But I’ve adopted the idea that I’ve worked too hard on dinner to make it look like take out
-Decluttering is a long process, but my former dump-areas are no longer! Everything I’ve organized has stayed organized.
-I never knew how chic I could feel after a pedicure! I love looking at my toes and feeling extra feminine. It’s such a little detail that gives me a boost when i need it. I’m going to try getting a manicure next.
I’m so looking forward to reading Polish Your Poise, and I’m ecstatic to discover that you have a blog and YouTube channel (I really need to learn how to do my hair).

Hi Amber, your guestbook entry brought me so much joy. Thank you for sharing the ways in which the books have inspired you. I had to laugh at your comment about feeling like a "tired whale". I'm right there with you in this pregnancy! :) Thank you for visiting and sharing your wonderful news.

Teatime with Jennifer | Royal Wedding Edition

5:05 AM 15 Comments

Today's Teatime with Jennifer is a special Royal Wedding edition. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed this past weekend at Windsor Castle in England. Theirs was the biggest royal wedding in England since William and Catherine's nuptials in 2011. Over 100,000 people lined the streets in Windsor to catch a glimpse at the newly married royals.

In today's Teatime with Jennifer, we discuss the ceremony, the fashion, and take a look back at the most beautiful royal wedding dresses of all time. My husband, Ben, also joins me at the end for his special marriage advice for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. I hope you enjoy today's Teatime with Jennifer video.

Ms. Markle wore a conservative boat-necked Givenchy gown with a dramatic veil.

Let's take a look at some of the most beautiful royal wedding dresses in recent years.

Princess Diana's ornate dress was representative of the grand 80s style.

Queen Elizabeth ll on her wedding day.

Princess Sofia of Sweden's beautiful wedding dress.

Grace Kelly on her wedding day. Her dress is timeless and stunning.

The Duchess of Cambridge on her wedding day. She had my favorite royal wedding dress of all time.

What are people saying about the bride's wedding dress? What were my thoughts on the fiery preaching? Who was the best-dressed guest? What was my favorite part of the ceremony? What marriage advice do we have to offer the newly married couple? Let's chat about all of these things in today's video.

Mentioned in the video:

The cellist who played at the royal wedding, Sheku Kannah Mason, has a new album out called Inspiration .

On the Chic Financial Principles for Debt-Free Living eCourse, Seema writes, "What a beautifully conducted course (both content and delivery)! It is so helpful to feel part of a community of like minded individuals. Though I know the freedom and security of debt free living/living below our means is worth its weight in gold it helps to know we are not alone in our endeavor. Sometimes the influence of “The Joneses” makes me question myself (are we being too stringent? Should we loosen up a little?) but this course has helped me reaffirm my commitment. My takeaway is that all things are possible and that embracing a joyful home life is so essential to not needing or wanting to spend on external entertainment. I’ve also been a devotee of the ten item wardrobe for the last 4 years and it is life changing. I never thought I’d love not shopping while adoring my wardrobe but I do. A hearty thanks to you for the inspiration and content you release into the world! You are making a positive difference in so many lives!"

Regarding last week's Pregnancy Chat video, Debbie writes,"Hi, Jennifer! I visit your blog from time to time and enjoy it very much. I am a "woman of a certain age" that enjoys it when younger women like you find joy in the simpler (and more important) things in life like their children, their marriages, and making their homes places of order and tranquility. I admire your focus on making the life you have the best you possibly can and by not complaining about what you don't have, counting your blessings and sharing that positivity with others. Thank you for being a great role model for women and I hope that all goes well as you look forward to the arrival of your next baby."

Debbie, thank you so much for your encouraging comment. I really appreciate your support and well-wishes.

High Fashion Dry Cleaner Dress? Teatime with Jennifer

5:23 AM 22 Comments

In today's special fashion edition of Teatime with Jennifer, I'm wearing my own version of Moschino's dry cleaner dress.

First, Nordstrom sold fake mud jeans and now Moschino is selling a dress that is modeled after the bag you get at the dry cleaner. Moschino sells this dress for around $737.

This truly reminded me of the episode of I Love Lucy, where Lucy and Ethel are in Paris longing to own a true Parisian haute couture gown. Ricky and Fred decide to trick them and construct a potato sack dress to tell them this is high fashion.

Lucy and Ethel are thrilled and wear their potato sack dresses out and about. When they discover they have been tricked, they throw their dresses away in contempt!

But the next day... they see the chicest Parisian models wearing potato sack dresses.

Trendy fashion will come and go, but classic styles endure! I hope you enjoy my commentary and fashion show in today's Teatime with Jennifer video :)

Here is another great testimonial on the ten-item wardrobe eCourse from Nora, who writes, "Hi Jennifer, I am so enjoying this course. I had (what I considered to be) a pretty minimalist wardrobe before, but I actually ended up donating 13 items of clothing after the first lesson! That might not sound like much, but I promise you it was a good chunk of my small wardrobe. I found a lot of value in this lesson, too. Your solution for people who don't like many (or any!) of the pieces they are keeping--update gradually with pieces that reflect your personal style--spoke to me on more than one level. There are a few pieces in my existing wardrobe that I'm not sure fit my personal style, but I also have found recently that I am SO OVER all of my home decor. I have replaced my old sectional with a lovely, modern couch and repainted my living room, but I find myself wanting to scrap it all and buy all new furniture right now! Your advice to slow down, save and budget, and replace pieces gradually in a responsible way has really helped me reframe my mindset about redecorating AND building my wardrobe! Thank you so much! Nora"

Hi Nora, I loved your comment! It's great to see that the ten-item wardrobe has given you self-discipline in other areas of your life. You will enjoy your new living room so much more if you take it slowly and don't go into debt over it. Congratulations!

On last week's Thanksgiving post, DJ writes,"Jennifer, I loved all your tips. I'm glad you mentioned the bathroom as often it's forgotten! Always best to leave out extra supplies - extra roll of tissue, a few extra hand towels - go in and toss out the old hand towels after a while and hang new ones! Everyone appreciates a fresh bathroom! Something that saves me stress is to get my house immaculately clean the week before Thanksgiving and then all I have to do is tidy up the house the day before and add some fresh flowers. Use up the food in your refrigerator the week before and totally clean the fridge as you won't have room for any old food once you start using the fridge on T-day! I love Robyn's idea of keeping notes from year to year! Wish I had done that. Of course you should allow guests to bring a dish! When I'm a guest along with a dish or two, I bring the hostess a large poinsettia to help her start off the Christmas season the next day!"

I loved your comment DJ. It's a great idea to get your house prepared in advance for hosting Thanksgiving. I'm wishing you and all of our American readers a very happy Thanksgiving this week!

Today, I would love to know... what do you think about Moschino's dry clean dress? Would you pay $737 for this dress? What do you think of absurd fashion as seen on celebrities on the red carpet? Let me know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

Let's Talk About Adulting | Teatime with Jennifer

2:51 AM 46 Comments

While walking through Home Goods this summer, I came across this canvas print that says "I Can't Adult Today".

While I think that this canvas is meant to be a light-hearted joke, I couldn't help but think that many people today actually do have a hard time tending to adult responsibilities. This generation has turned the word adult into a verb: adulting. And they sure are having a hard time doing it! What does this mean for our future and for our children's generation? I hope you join me for today's Teatime with Jennifer video, as we sip a cup of tea and wonder at the marvel of adulting.

Christina Writes, "Your fall and winter clothes are so beautiful and chic! I just ordered my last two core items and one extra which I think should do it! There was one dress I wanted but my size is now gone but I'm excited about my order and how freeing it feels to be done! Two questions... I have a beautiful black maxi dress that I love with sandals but feel lost on how to transition it to cool weather. What type of boots will you wear with your maxi? I'm wondering if ankle boots will look ok? I feel like my riding boots will be too bulky under it. Also, my biggest trouble with completing a 10 item wardrobe is quickly finding things that I like the fit of. I order and return so much and shopping in a store would be nice but I'm a mom of almost 8 so just don't want to spend free time in a mall. Do you always find what you like right away? I'm sick of the ongoing orders and returns."

Hi Christina, Thank you! With a maxi dress, you can definitely wear ankle boots or if it's still warm weather, ballet flats. Riding boots might be too bulky under it. You won't know until you try. I also understand your plight with not wanting to spend a long time on shopping. I am in the same boat right now. This year I needed to quickly order my wardrobe before my trip, which is why I ordered my clothes online, and I'm very happy with all of my choices. As you continue the ten-item wardrobe, you become really good at knowing what will work for you and what won't. Please keep us updated!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I pray everyone affected by the hurricanes are on the road to recovery. I will see you on Monday. Until then...

Narcissistic Audience Members | Teatime with Jennifer + Giveaway Winner

5:49 AM 24 Comments

It's that time of year again! Time for recitals, performances and special ceremonies for our children. In today's Teatime with Jennifer, I have another etiquette horror story for you and discuss a trend that I am noticing lately: narcissistic audience members.

We have all seen them: people who disrupt performances because they are not thinking of others. Blocking other people's views with their recording devices, texting and talking loudly... these are just some of the offenses! As our society becomes more and more narcissistic, it is important for us to discuss these sometimes touchy subjects and realize that our actions matter and do affect other people. I hope you join me for today's chat and chime in with your thoughts in the comment section below!

Fake Mud Jeans | Teatime with Jennifer

7:01 AM 17 Comments

In today's Teatime with Jennifer, I'm sipping sweet iced tea and discussing the Fake Mud Jeans that have gone viral this week. Now that is a sentence I never thought I'd write!

What are Fake Mud Jeans?

Made by brand PRPS, Fake Mud Jeans sell for $425 and, according to the description from Nordstrom, are heavily distressed medium-blue denim jeans in a comfortable straight-leg fit embody rugged, Americana workwear that's seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you're not afraid to get down and dirty.

These jeans are representative of many things that are wrong in society right now. They are, in a sense, the Emperor's new clothes. When I posted the Washington Post Article discussing these jeans, many Facebook followers posted their thoughts. Here were some of my favorites:

Just like we have become accustomed to ripped jeans, and sheer yoga pants, are we being conditioned to accept muddy clothes as everyday fashion? How are these jeans a commentary on our virtual reality society, where we like to appear as though we do something, without actually doing it? How far will the bounds of casual dressing go? All of these topics and more are discussed in this week's Teatime with Jennifer video.

Anna W writes:
Poise in arguments in so hard, but I agree that you can improve with practice. Some people really like drama, and if you respond heatedly the situation will continue to escalate. Staying calm takes a lot of the fun out of it for them. And for those who are genuinely upset, staying calm can help them have a conversation instead of an argument. One thing I've found that helped with my kids is taking a breath and pausing to say their name before responding. This helped me not blurt out the harsher words I was thinking, and the small pause and calm response can (sometimes) help diffuse the situation.

Hi Anna, I really like your advice of saying your child's name before responding to their bad behavior. Now, I just need to work on not sounding angry while saying their name! Ha! Thank you to you and everyone for your wonderful comments on the Q&A posts.
