While Everyone Else Has Been Buying Toilet Paper, We've Been Buying THIS

5:19 AM 6 Comments

When the pandemic was announced, people started to hoard and stock up on toilet paper. We humans are attached to our modern luxuries (toilet paper is a fairly recent invention... humans have survived for thousands of year without it). Surely, I understand wanting the convenience and comfort of toilet paper, but it seems that there is a critical area that many people are ignoring...

As you know, in my What to Do if You Run Out of Toilet Paper video, there are many alternative options to toilet paper. While toilet paper is not essential to living... eating is. Eating is mandatory and while we may have our pantries stocked with canned goods, we will also want to supplement with fresh organic produce too. How can we do this when the grocery stores are gouged and we are encouraged to stay in our homes? Growing a garden is a solution.

You don't need a large plot of land. In fact, you don't need land at all. Even if all you have is a tiny balcony or doorstep or a window box, you can grow your own food. You can even grow food indoors. As you know, Ben and I are clueless gardeners, yet each year our garden produces abundant produce. If we can do it, you can too. Today, I give you a tour of our early spring garden and the plans we have for it.

I hope you enjoy today's video.

I learned a lot from these books.

Comment of the Week
Blakey writes, "Jennifer, I just thought of you because I was hanging my laundry when there was a knock at the door and lo and behold it was one of the leading candidates for mayor of Miami Beach, where I live. We had a wonderful chat, and I was in one of my favorite dresses, with makeup on, as per your advice of always looking presentable. Who would have thought that at 5 pm on a weekday that would have happened to me? Thanks yet again for your invaluable advice! : )"

Blakey, I loved your testimony. Yes, we never know when looking presentable will come in handy, which is why we should look presentable always. I'm glad you had a good experience!

Thank you for watching. I would love to know how your family is preparing right now. Do you grow your own food? Have you had success with gardening? Or failures? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog. See you soon!

Gardening with Children | Therapeutic Gardening | The Clueless Gardeners

6:26 AM 5 Comments

The children and I are preparing our Spring garden. Today we bought some herbs, vegetables, and flowers and enjoy spending the afternoon tending to our little patch of land.

I share an excerpt of Emily Dickinson's poem in the video... here is the remainder of the poem.

A light exists in Spring
by Emily Dickinson

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.

Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay —

A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.

I hope you enjoy today's video and that it brings you joy :)

Comment of the Week
Shiryon writes, "I really am grateful for getting that "for special occasions only" mindset out of my life. Life is too short to not enjoy our nice things all the time. My grandmother died with brand new things wrapped in plastic, while only wearing worn out clothes daily, I guess it's that "depression era" mentality that that generation had. Thank you for another fun and inspiring video."

Thank you, Shiryon! It was a real shift when I got the "for special occasions only" mindset out of my life. I am so happy to hear your shift with this too!

The Clueless Gardeners Plant a Bay and Plum Tree

6:08 AM 6 Comments

The Clueless Gardeners are back and more clueless than ever! In today's video we are having mature plum and bay trees planted in our backyard garden.

Ben wanted privacy from the neighbors in our backyard... I was more interested having fruit that we could pick this summer. At any rate, we both got what we wanted in the form of two beautiful trees: a plum and a bay tree.

The plum tree

I would have preferred to have another fruit tree in lieu of the bay but Ben convinced me. The bay tree is so exotic and beautiful and you can use its leaves in cooking. As soon as we get our kitchen back I am looking forward to flavoring our soups and sauces with bay leaves!

Today's video is a collaboration with our real life friends who have a YouTube channel called The Busy Gardener. Cameron and his family are wonderful and, if you like gardening videos, I highly recommend their channel. They are actually knowledgable with gardening... ha! They have many videos featuring their beautiful Southern California orchard. Be sure to check out their channel, tell them we said, "hello" and subscribe!

Thank you for joining us today. I hope you have a lovely weekend and we will see you on Monday!

The Clueless Gardeners Prepare for Spring

6:52 AM 13 Comments

Happy Friday! Friday just might be my favorite day of the week. I love that the week is winding down to a close and the weekend, with all its possibilities, is at hand. On today's episode of The Clueless Gardeners, we prepare our garden for spring.

Gardening is a family affair. It's very important for us to involve the children with choosing the plants and even planting them. They just love seeing our fruits and vegetables grow. They also love planting seeds and watching them sprout. There's nothing like getting your hands dirty when you are a kid!

In today's video, Ben plants my favorite rose, The Double Delight. It is the most magnificent rose to me because of its beautiful color (two-toned pink and white) as well as its amazingly sweet fragrance.

I would love to know... what is your favorite rose?

Thank you for joining us today and thank you to everyone who is taking my new eCourse, How to be Efficient at Home. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your comments on each lecture and it's fun to see you connecting with each other while there.

Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see you on Monday!
