Giorgio Armani Sparks Fury, Millennial Dresses like a Victorian + Yoga Pants Bad for Women? 3 Articles on Dress

Giorgio Armani sparks fury with his comments on fashion advertising, a millennial man chooses to wear Victorian clothes every day, and are yoga pants bad for women? Welcome to a new 3 Articles on the Subject of Dress.

In the first article from The Daily Mail, Italian fashion designer, Giorgio Armani, is put on blast for his critique of the fashion industry. Mr. Armani is concerned about the over sexualization of women in fashion advertising. Unfortunately when he made his opinion known, he also made a rather unfortunate analogy.

Our second article is actually a YouTube video featuring Millennial, Michael Koropisz, who chooses to wear Victorian clothing every day. Mr. Koropisz is a portrait artist who leads an unconventional life. I applaud his originality and love that he dresses in a way that he is passionate about.

And the final article is an opinion piece in the New York Times by Honor Jones. Ms. Jones questions why women wear yoga pants to exercise. She doesn't find them particularly warm or comfortable. Is it for self- optimization? To appear sexy? I'm not sure if either of those options are true, but I must admit to being perplexed as to why women wear them so much. Do you have insight into this?

I would love to know your opinions on each of the articles discussed.

Comment of the Week
Shannon writes, "I've been following you for a lot of years and enjoying every minute. You said a word in your video that struck a cord. "Transition". From clutter to declutter, from large wardrobe to 10 item, from season to season, it's all a transition and a period of growth. In my mind I heard you have 10 items, some extras and that's it. Only today did I realize that's not it at all. Every season you're moving items in and out. It's not a stagnant wardrobe it's actually ever-changing. Wow. That makes me feel better Here in the South we can have 3 seasons in one week. It may be 40 degrees one day and 70 the next so I may have to play a little in "transition" between seasons with my "capsule." So right now I may have a light winter dress one day and a spring dress with a light colored cardigan the next. It's all good. Thank you. BTW I watched your earliest videos and loved noting the transitions in your life...like facials, eyebrow threading, pedicures, etc. Life is always a lovely transition. Thank you Jennifer."

Thank you, Shannon! Yes, it's a wardrobe that flows and the transitions are key. In today's video I'm wearing a spring item. It's the first one I bought for spring and I'm enjoying the transition. Thank you for watching!

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for sharing the article about the young man who chooses consciously to dress in Victorian fashion. He is making a thoughtful decision, and that is what separates him from the majority of people today, even more so than his actual clothing. Most people are simply wearing what they see everyone else wearing. This is why women wear yoga pants or leggings, in my opinion. They wear them because they see everyone else wearing them. Period. There is no other real reason.

Warm best,
Alexandra

Hi Alexandra,

I agree! I think a lot of people follow the trends of what everyone else is wearing without questioning it. I loved the young man in the Victorian attire too. I would like to check out his artwork. Have a lovely day!

Hi Jennifer! I’m not sure I’ve ever commented! I can’t wait to see your spring reveal- it’s always fun to see other people’s personal styles. I do think we are naturally attuned to want to blend with the pack, rather than stick out, especially if you lean a bit more introverted in nature. With that being said, I have to tell you: I love my yoga pants! They are the single most comfortable item I’ve ever put on my body! I do agree, they shouldn’t replace the need to wear ‘real’ clothes. But once you get used to them for working out, there’s no going back! I am very sensitive to the feel of fabric and constriction on my body, and the right yoga pants allow absolute freedom in movement that I’ve been unable to find anywhere else. Sweatpants can be ok for staying warm in the evening ( I live in a cold weather climate), but, at least on my body type, it’s obvious that I’m feeling down in the dumps or depressed if I’m ever wearing them, because my mood often matches my clothing- and sweatpants are nothing short of depressing (on me). I’m guessing a lot of women get used to wearing yoga pants because they are the most comfortable item of clothing ever, at least to me. As far as an actual yoga class- shorts that don’t conform to the body are quite inappropriate, as are tops in the same vein. Maybe our yoga practices are more athletic than they were 30 years ago, but downward dogs, headstands, and attempts at splits don’t work if you can’t move the body, and are distracting if your clothing gaps, flaps into your face, or bunches on your legs. It’s actually very enlightening and curious for me to hear you say that you don’t really ever like them or find them comfortable. It broadens the idea of how different we all can be with how something feels on our bodies. I love studio yoga classes, as well as ones at home on an app, and I tend to workout in my garage or on a running trail. I don’t keep an extensive workout wardrobe, so finding an item that works for multiple uses is a bonus. I don’t know if this resonates with anyone else. Thanks for the articles you discussed. As always, they’re interesting! Janna

Hi Janna, I loved your comment! It was so well-articulated and I appreciate you sharing why you love them so much. I had a woman who wears yoga pants all the time write a comment on this post, but she was very angry and resorted to personally insulting me so I didn't publish her comment. I think it's sad when people aren't able to write a civilized and intelligent response and just resort to personal attacks. That's why your comment shines to me. Thank you! Have a wonderful evening.

I also LOVE yoga pants. But I wear them to go to the gym or hike or SUP. I agree with Janna on all of her points, sweatpants are highly inappropriate for an actual yoga class and would really get in your way, never mind be too hot and uncomfortable. Same for barre and Pilates class. I do not wear them to be sexy. Do I occasionally run an errand in said yoga pants on my to/from the gym? Yup, c’est la vie there are only so many hours in the day. I also get dressed in ‘real’ clothes every day.

I'm confused ... yoga pants and leggings are not one and the same. My yoga pants, which I wear on my daily walk, are knit, straight-narrow legged pants. They don't cling or compress.

The young man in Victorian dress is not self-conscious because he's doing it to get attention. I'm not saying that's bad, but he WANTS people to notice.

I agree with what Gorgio is saying but he should have used the term "objectify."

Good morning, Jennifer!

I find your "Three Articles on Dress" videos fascinating. I've always had a love for sociology. I recently found an article that made me think of you immediately and I wanted to share it with you. It's about how women and their attire are perceived in the workplace. The main point of the article is that dressing is "branding," which I find to be an absolute truth (and I know you do, too). I also like that this article was written by a woman and is not a one-size-fits-all guide on how to dress. She does not disparage any particular choice of dress but gives a common sense approach on using your wardrobe as a branding tool to help achieve your workplace goals.

I love that there has been rise in this kind of attitude. Yes, you may be able to wear anything you want in this society but that doesn't mean you should. Just like in other areas of life, giving in to one's wants may not be the way to serve one's needs. Hmmm, that brings a question to mind: Why are we able to see and accept this concept with food, for example, but not with our dress?

Wishing you and your family health and serenity,
Samantha

I just realized I neglected to add the link in my previous comment. Alas, these things happen when you're a new mommy! Sorry about that.
