How to Look Good from Behind | 5 Tips to Look Great

6:46 AM 0 Comments

We tend to style ourselves from the front. We will do our hair that way. We don’t look at the back of our outfit. Today I’m here to ask you: what do you look like from behind? Do you even know?

I'm going to share 5 key areas we need to focus on in order to look good from behind. Let's go!

⚜️ Featured in the video
Foot file (this is the best!)

⚜️ What I'm Wearing
Rungolee silk blouse DailyC for free silk face mask
Mott & Bow grey jeans JLS10 for 10% off
ballet flats by Jane Winkworth
earrings by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% off
pearl bracelet by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% off
Nail polish Ring Me by Londontown JenniferS for 25% off

1. The head. Many people don’t think about this. A lot of ladies style their hair looking only at the front. In order to reach the back of your hair you might pull it all forward but when you finish, have you smoothed out the back? Make sure the back of your hair is as presentable as the front.

 2. The back. Here are a few unpresentable things that might be happening back there: your bra strap might be showing. You might have an ill-fitting bra causing pinching of the rolls, rather than a smoothing effect. Your tag could be sticking out. How many times has that happened to you? . You might have lint or dog hair on the back of your shirt. It's always a great idea to use the lint roller on your blouse before you put it on so you can reach all the spaces. If you have trouble with your bra straps staying in place you can use wardrobe tape to keep them hidden.

⚜️ Recommended Undergarments Davy Piper JenniferScott20 for 20% off
Montelle Intimates CHIC20 for 20% off
Neiwai Barely Zero Bra JS10 for 10% off

 3. The derrière. So many things to consider here. Always look at your outfit from behind. Is the view flattering? Is it what you want to see? If you’ve read Lessons from Madame Chic you will recall the story about the woman who had a hole in the bottom area of her trousers. Complete horror story, right? Make sure there are no holes. Also, make sure your pants fit correctly. Are they too tight? You can find smoothing undergarments that can help.

 4. Legs- however you like to maintain your legs, pay attention to those too. For me, I need to make sure my skin isn’t ashy and dry. That’s a big problem I struggle with. Don't forget to moisturize your legs if they are going to be on display. Don't forget the magic power of hosiery! Hipstik (JEN15 for 15% off) is my favorite hosiery brand. I love the elastic waste that never slips or fails.

 5. Your heels! This one is huge! Dry, cracked heels are very unflattering.  If you are not able to take care of this, wear shoes that cover your heels. This foot file is the best one I have found and you can find it for a good price on Amazon

Can You Have a Glow Up After 40?

6:51 AM 4 Comments

Can you have a glow-up after the age of 40? Let's discuss this in today's video.

First, what is a glow up?

A glow up is an incredible transformation. The glow up process focuses on the improvement of physical appearance, individual style, overall attractiveness ... a mental, physical, and emotional transformation for the better.

Clearly there are many aspects to a glow up. Today we will focus on the surface-level aspects involving overall appearance: looking good and projecting that into the world.

⚜️5 Key Points to an Attractive Glow Up

Glowing Skin

Skin is a big deal as you age. The key is to take care of it and display healthy skin. For me, it's less about erasing signs of aging... those aren't going away and they add character. It's more about embracing your skin as it is and taking care of it optimally.

I use the Paula's Choice Skincare products and they come at my highest recommendation. Here is a list of what I use on a regular basis. I order these on their subscription. Please use whatever skincare line you love the most! The key is to take care of your skin. You can do that on any budget. It's about being intentional.

A Vibrant Smile

How did you get those laugh lines in the first place? From so many years of smiling! :) A vibrant smile is a key to your glow up: being happy in your own skin and radiating it through your unapologetic smile.

Thank you to NixWhite teeth whitening for bringing us this segment. JEN15 gives $15 off.

Intermittent Fasting

Lilysilk white blouse and black silk trousers Daily15 for 15% off SKYE necklace Jennifer20 for 20% off

The biggest part of my glow up transformation after 40 can be attributed to Intermittent Fasting. You can read my 18-month update here if you want to learn about my experience. I do the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting and was able to lose 30 lbs and improve my health in immeasurable ways. Disclaimer: Please consult your doctor before trying out intermittent fasting.

Flattering Makeup

We age, but sometimes our makeup routine doesn't. We don't want our makeup look to be stuck in a past decade so it's important to stay au courant with the modern trends by watching makeup tutorials or consulting a professional. Here are some of my favorite makeup brands:

Unapologetic Style

The older you get, the more you realize your time on earth is short. Every day should be spent expressing your true style. The ten-item capsule wardrobe can help you do that as you refine what you wear each day and become intentional about how you present yourself to the world. Check out my recent Core Items post and Extras post for fall inspiration.

Comment of the Week

Cynthia S. writes, "What a phenomenal interview! So inspirational. Jose is such a beautiful person and talented artist, so humble and well spoken. I have known since I was a child that I should pursue a career in art. I have since graduated college, married, and had children. I remember as a first time mother, making and creating and trying to balance motherhood. I decided then that I really had to prioritize motherhood. My tiny house at the time couldn't handle a messy niche. I have truly been in hot pursuit of my dreams again. I appreciate this interview and people who share their art story more than ever! Thank you, Jose and Jennifer."

Cynthia, I'm so glad you enjoyed my interview with Jose Trujillo! I am wishing you the best for your own artistic career.

8 Ways to Look Effortlessly Polished

10:04 AM 1 Comments

I'm sharing 8 ways to look effortlessly polished in today's video. For more inspiration, check out my book, Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic

Looking polished doesn't come naturally to people. A polished look is intentional. In today's video I go over 8 tips to help you look effortlessly polished, naturally.

SKYE Isabella dress Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 1

Regard the Overall Outfit When selecting an outfit, regard the overall look and ask yourself if it is a polished look. You will want to avoid excessive rips or overly trendy items. Make sure your clothing is well-taken care of. Remove sweater pills and make sure your pants are tailored to the correct height, for example. I use this machine to remove lint and pills on sweaters. A good clothing steamer will also come in handy.

Dress by Rungolee DAILYC for free silk face mask Earrings by SKYE  Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 2

Have a Clear Complexion This is clearly easier said than done. Choose the best skincare products for you that allow you to have clear skin. If you struggle with blemishes or dark circles, apply your makeup in a way that creates the appearance of clear, healthy skin. I use Paula's Choice skincare. I like their RESIST line as well as their Omega line. Right now I'm double cleansing (as opposed to using a makeup wipe) with the Omega Complex Cleansing Balm and the Resist Cleanser. Then I tone with the toner, apply an AHA or BHA exfoliant (only 3x a week), and finally the RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer. Once a week I apply a Purifying Face Mask and this AHA BHA Exfoliant Peel

Tip No. 3

Control Unwanted Hair Controlling unwanted hair is a key part to looking polished. If you want to have smooth legs, for example, shaving is a must. Thank you to Billie for bringing us today's video and sharing their excellent razor with us.

Tip No. 4

Brows Before Bros I'm going to keep repeating this one because it's so critical. Finding the eyebrow shape is a big key to looking polished. Uneven, unruly brows can create an unkempt look. I have used Vegamour to grow out my sparse brows and have been pleased with the results. This is my favorite eyebrow palette

Tip No. 5

Perfect the Neutral Manicure If you'd like a low-maintenance, yet polished manicure, opt for neutral shades. Dark shades are beautiful, but unless you can fix chips right away, they can hinder that polished look you're going for. My favorite neutral shades are Londontown illuminating nail concealer, Cheerio, and Teatime JenniferS for 25% off, and Essie Mademoiselle and Ballet Slippers. For your feet, a good foot file is imperative to get the rough skin off.

Oliver Cabell white leather sneakers JSCOTT10 for $10 off

Tip No. 6

Wear Well-Kept Shoes No matter what type of shoe you're wearing, whether it be smart or casual, make sure your shoes are well-kept. Scruffy, fraying, or falling-apart shoes will need to be repaired or replaced. Shoes (and handbags as you'll see in the next tip) are very important. Here are some high-quality shoe brands: Oliver Cabell JSCOTT10 for $10 off, Thursday Boot Co., Nothing New, The Spanish Sandal Co. JEN10 for 10% off, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom

Teddy Blake Handbag  TBJennC20 for an extra $20 off. Dress by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 7

Carry a Quality Handbag Equally as important as shoes are handbags (and wallets!). Yours doesn't have to be expensive, although you should invest in the best quality you can afford as a well-constructed handbag could last you years and save you money in the long-run. I've had my Louis Vuitton Totally MM for ten years and have worn it regularly. It still looks fabulous! Here is a blogpost that links some of my favorite handbags.

Blouse by Rungolee DailyC for free silk face mask, Bracelet by SKYE  Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 8

Messy Hair? Yes, I care! If you want to look elegant, the "messy hair don't care" attitude needs to go. That doesn't mean your hair needs to look like everyone else's hair. Embrace your hair's unique look, but do have a plan for it. Whether you like to wear it up or down, figure out the best and most flattering looks for you.

Mother's Day Gift Idea

Mother's Day is around the corner and this year, instead of doing a video on gift ideas, I will be periodically sharing ideas on the blog. I can't tell you how many people I have purchased Bend Soap Co. products for. They make excellent presents for both men and women, and they would be particularly great for Mother's Day. These are their spring fragrances. I love the natural scents and use the sugar scrub myself several times a week. The Bend Soap Co. use code DC10 for 10% off.

B. Brundage writes, "A trick my mom taught me is to put wax paper on top of armoires and kitchen cabinets. The dust settles on it and you can just throw it away, wipe down and replace. Makes seasonal cleaning easier."

Thank you for that tip! We put newspaper on top of our kitchen cabinets but I forget to do this with the armoires too.

I would love to know how you look presentable when you're having an "off" day. What are your best tips? Your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.
