Can You Have a Glow Up After 40?

6:51 AM 4 Comments

Can you have a glow-up after the age of 40? Let's discuss this in today's video.

First, what is a glow up?

A glow up is an incredible transformation. The glow up process focuses on the improvement of physical appearance, individual style, overall attractiveness ... a mental, physical, and emotional transformation for the better.

Clearly there are many aspects to a glow up. Today we will focus on the surface-level aspects involving overall appearance: looking good and projecting that into the world.

⚜️5 Key Points to an Attractive Glow Up

Glowing Skin

Skin is a big deal as you age. The key is to take care of it and display healthy skin. For me, it's less about erasing signs of aging... those aren't going away and they add character. It's more about embracing your skin as it is and taking care of it optimally.

I use the Paula's Choice Skincare products and they come at my highest recommendation. Here is a list of what I use on a regular basis. I order these on their subscription. Please use whatever skincare line you love the most! The key is to take care of your skin. You can do that on any budget. It's about being intentional.

A Vibrant Smile

How did you get those laugh lines in the first place? From so many years of smiling! :) A vibrant smile is a key to your glow up: being happy in your own skin and radiating it through your unapologetic smile.

Intermittent Fasting

Lilysilk white blouse and black silk trousers Daily15 for 15% off SKYE necklace Jennifer20 for 20% off

The biggest part of my glow up transformation after 40 can be attributed to Intermittent Fasting. You can read my 18-month update here if you want to learn about my experience. I do the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting and was able to lose 30 lbs and improve my health in immeasurable ways. Disclaimer: Please consult your doctor before trying out intermittent fasting.

Flattering Makeup

We age, but sometimes our makeup routine doesn't. We don't want our makeup look to be stuck in a past decade so it's important to stay au courant with the modern trends by watching makeup tutorials or consulting a professional. Here are some of my favorite makeup brands:

Unapologetic Style

The older you get, the more you realize your time on earth is short. Every day should be spent expressing your true style. The ten-item capsule wardrobe can help you do that as you refine what you wear each day and become intentional about how you present yourself to the world. Check out my recent Core Items post and Extras post for fall inspiration.

Comment of the Week

Cynthia S. writes, "What a phenomenal interview! So inspirational. Jose is such a beautiful person and talented artist, so humble and well spoken. I have known since I was a child that I should pursue a career in art. I have since graduated college, married, and had children. I remember as a first time mother, making and creating and trying to balance motherhood. I decided then that I really had to prioritize motherhood. My tiny house at the time couldn't handle a messy niche. I have truly been in hot pursuit of my dreams again. I appreciate this interview and people who share their art story more than ever! Thank you, Jose and Jennifer."

Cynthia, I'm so glad you enjoyed my interview with Jose Trujillo! I am wishing you the best for your own artistic career.

I hope you enjoyed today's video. I would love to know... have you had a glow up? What contributed to it? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

Ten Ways To Be Effortlessly Polished | Elegant Behaviors

5:59 AM 2 Comments

In continuation of my series on being elegant and polished, I am sharing ten more ways to be effortlessly polished. These tips focus more on being rather than "looking". I do hope you enjoy today's video

Equally important to how we look is how we behave. They both go hand-in-hand in exuding elegance. Today we are going to examine how we carry ourselves and how we treat the spaces around us as well as other people...

Carry yourself gracefully From your posture to the way you walk, carry yourself gracefully. Here’s a trick: set up a camera and film yourself doing an activity (like cleaning the living room). This will allow you to see yourself as others see you. You might notice you hunch your shoulders when you get stressed, or that you tend to stomp your feet instead of lightly walking gracefully. Aim to be intentional about how you carry yourself for a polished outcome.

Eye contact Eye contact vs. shifty eyes… which ones seems more calming and grounded? We all know it’s eye contact. No matter who you are speaking to, give them your full attention with eye contact. Avoid looking over their shoulder or at other people, which gives the impression that you are not listening to them or interested in what they’re saying.

A clean car I get an F- on this one… I do. But I will try to get better at it. If your self-presentation is neat and your home is neat, well… your car should be neat too. Avoid trash and excess bags and clothing and whatever else ends up cluttering up the car. Go for a tidy interior and exterior to extend elegance to the road.

A clean handbag If we look polished, but our handbag doubles as a miniature trash bag, we are sending mixed messages. Elegance and poise should extend everywhere and our handbags are no exception. Regularly clean out your bag and discard of trash or reallocate important things that don’t belong there.

Take Your Meals Sitting Down This one is big. It’s very hard to be elegant while walking and eating at the same time. After all, how can you focus on your food? There are a few exceptions, such as when you get an ice cream at the beach, for example, but in general, we should aim to sit down to a properly set table to enjoy our meals. Walking and eating at the same time is not chic.

Taking your time (not rushing) There are times to rush and times to not rush. In general, we do not want to rush through our everyday life. Don’t allow others to rush you either.

Having a calm demeanor is in stark contrast to a rushed/ harried demeanor and goes a long way toward projecting poise. Not overreacting When we get mad, whether in traffic, or in conversation with someone, the elegant thing to do is not overreact. Remain uber-calm. Put on your Mona Lisa smile, if you must. Watch your breathing, posture, and eye contact. Refrain from saying something you’ll likely regret later. Pause. Walk away. Do whatever you need to do and refrain from lowering your standards.

Air of mystery How much do you share on social media? Is it too much? Do you share too much of your children? Of your problems? Of your triumphs? Do you overshare what happens to you throughout your day? Assess this because poised and elegant people are also mysterious, in a good way. Check out Lessons from Madame Chic for more on this topic.

What experience do you give from start to finish? It’s true we are not responsible for making other people feel things, but we should be interested in what experience we give people from start to finish. Before we meet in person, we might communicate by email, for example. Are your emails appropriate and professional? When we meet them, we give a first impression. Are you dressed appropriately? When we close our conversation we leave them with a feeling of how it went. Did they feel that they were heard? Being conscious of what experience we give people from start to finish is key to garnering poise.

Be well-spoken Elegant people avoid base swear words. They also avoid excessive filler words (like, um, you know). They also phrase their sentences beautifully: “I would like vs. I want”. I will be doing a follow-up video on this subject so make sure you’re subscribed to my YouTube channel and turn on notifications so you don’t miss it.

5 Ways to Be More Elegant

6:26 AM 2 Comments

In today's video I'm sharing 5 ways to be more elegant. These are practical tips that can aid you in any social situation.

⚜️Be open and friendly

When meeting new people our body language should be open and friendly, not closed off and standoffish. A great reminder is to keep your phone out of sight so you don't use it as a crutch when you start to feel social anxiety. Giving eye contact, smiling, and listening, with genuine interest will take you far when wishing to express an air of elegance.

⚜️Be interesting

Once you do engage in conversation, have interesting things to say. Discuss topics you are passionate about and that can help you get to know the other person. Don't be afraid to discuss books, films, interesting places, and cuisines.

⚜️Go light on the makeup

For an optimal air of elegance, daytime makeup should be subtle and kept to a minimum. Daylight reveals all things and we do not want our faces caked with makeup. Get away with using only what you need to enhance your beauty. You can always turn the volume up on your makeup application after sunset, if desired.

⚜️Dress for elegance

You knew this tip was coming! Our first impressions of people are always visual impressions and what you wear is like your visual calling card to the world. Dress appropriately and dress for elegance, displaying your true style. When you get in the habit of doing this on a regular basis, not just when you "expect" to see people, you will naturally exude elegance.

⚜️Practice good deportment

Another visual cue lies in our posture. Good posture and deportment (how we sit, stand, and walk) makes up a lot of our elegant persona. If you are not in the habit of sitting, standing, and walking in an elegant fashion, it's time to practice on a daily basis. Practice at home. Walk elegantly up and down the stairs. Be conscious of how you sit and how your posture performs throughout the day. This will make you move gracefully and be a very flattering aspect of your visual first impression.

Ten Elegant Things You Own But Probably Never Use

5:51 AM 7 Comments

I hope you had a beautiful Mother's Day and felt celebrated. We had a wonderful day.

In today's video, I'm sharing ten elegant things you own, but probably never use. Now I realize The Daily Connoisseur audience is more likely to use many of these elegant things, but the truth is that most people struggle with using their best on a daily basis. Lessons from Madame Chic discusses this very topic in the chapter, Always Use the Best Things You Have.

Today I'm sharing ten elegant things we have at home that we might not use on a regular basis. So let's have a look.
⚜️ A letter opener This is the one I forget to use the most. I frequently open the mail with my bare hands (like a barbarian. Ha!) But a designated mail section in the home can ensure that you open the mail elegantly (and avoid paper cuts) with a letter opener.

⚜️ A fountain pen (or other elegant pen) and ink. We often receive these elegant pens as gifts but rarely do we use them. I know I avoid using my nice fountain pens because my handwriting is not very good (that is actually an understatement). I'm using The Art of Cursive Penmanship right now to practice changing my bad handwriting habits.

⚜️ Your china teacups Now I know many of you don't struggle with this one. I see the Instagram photos you tag me in. So this audience probably does use their very best teacups on a daily basis... but how many people have a beautiful teacup that collects dust on a shelf while they drink their tea from an old mug? Now is the time to use those teacups... the teacup I'm sharing here is the exclusive Victoria Magazine and April Cornell Blue Roses tea set.

⚜️ Your fancy dishes Much like the teacups, our fanciest dishes tend to sit in the cupboards until a special occasion arises. The trouble is that special occasions only arise a few times each year and we rarely use our nice dishes on a regular basis.

⚜️ Daily tablecloths Now tablecloths aren't for everyone and they might not work in your home, but I do like to drape tablecloths on both our dining room and kitchen tables. Our kitchen table is relatively new and has a beautiful wooden top. To avoid the children smashing bits of food into the grooves, I place a clear plastic tablecloth on the table to protect the table from spills and then lay a beautiful cloth on top of that. I then wash the tablecloth at the end of each day (sometimes I'll gather them to wash and will wash them every other day). I find that this protects the table and looks attractive.

⚜️ Using cloth napkins on a daily basis is a wonderful practice, not only because it is more elegant than paper napkins but also because they are better for the environment. These are similar French blue napkins to the ones I show in the video and these are the exact ones I use.

⚜️ Your best clothing on a daily basis. Now, this does not mean we wear our ballgowns to Walmart. This does mean, however, that we wear our nice clothing on a daily basis and not save it for "later". Many men and women spend every day in their comfy sweats and exercise gear. I love to encourage both men and women to dress well on a daily basis. Presentable clothing can be comfortable too and it is always the most elegant choice. For more, check out my Spring Ten-Item Capsule Wardrobe for 2020.

⚜️ Luxurious bath products I know many people who receive luxury bath products as gifts and then proceed to never use them. They sit collecting dust as a decoration in their bathroom. Use your best products just as you would use your best clothing. If you use it all up at least you enjoyed it. The two bath products I feature in the video are Bend Soap Co. Use code DC10 for 10% off and Azalia Spa Goods aromatherapy body oils (Aimee, the owner, is a Daily Connoisseur!).

⚜️ Your best posture This one is free and available to most of us. Unless you have a health condition that prevents you from using good posture, striving to sit and walk straight creates an elegant effect with our appearance. It's also one of the Chic Assignments this month.

⚜️ Classic literature We have beautiful leather-bound volumes of the classics on our shelves, but how often do we take those dusty books of the shelves and read them? I like taking my Leather-bound Sherlock Holmes volume down on a regular basis and reading a short story. I do this with my other classic volumes too. It's food for the mind and very elegant.

Thank you to The Chic Connoisseurs for bringing us today's video.

Comment of the Week
N McElroy writes, "This thought did cross my mind during this pandemic. My mom would save things until she had "somewhere to go". Perfume, nice things, etc., would go unused and still have tags on it. Somehow that habit rubbed off on me. As another birthday is getting ready to roll around, I am making a sincere effort not to let my "nice" things go unused. My china my mom gave me, my favorite perfumes, my beloved shoes etc., will be worn on a regular, ordinary day. Life is too short to wait and tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Have a great day!"

My New eCourse: Carry Yourself with Poise

6:12 AM 3 Comments

Hello Daily Connoisseurs,

I've been working on my new eCourse, Carry Yourself with Poise, for the past five months and it is finally ready.

This course has well over two hours of video instruction and covers both the "seen" and the "unseen" aspects of what it takes to be an elegant lady.

We live in a world that does not value elegance and poise as it used to, but that does not mean it is not valuable. In fact, it is more valuable than ever as I discuss in today's announcement video.

I look forward to seeing you on the eCourse.

Have a wonderful Easter weekend.

With love,

Jennifer xx
