Husband and Wife Talk About STRESS | Ben and Jennifer Scott

6:48 AM 6 Comments

In part 3 of my stress series, I invite Ben on the channel to cap off our conversation about stress. We discuss stress from both a man and a woman's perspective. Ben, as usual, has some very insightful ideas to share and I hope you enjoy listening to him in today's video.

The statistics discussed in the video were taken from this Gallup poll.

The article lists the top two things to cause stress in one's life as children and work. Would you agree with that?

Would you say that stress for men and women is caused by different things? Is your significant other stressed out by the same things you are?

These are all interesting insights into the world of stress and we would love to hear from you in the comment section.

Ten-Item Wardrobe Burnout | 5 Tips

6:03 AM 7 Comments

Yesterday, we discussed how the Ten-Item Wardrobe can help with your shopping addiction. Today, we are going to discuss the ten-item wardrobe and burnout. Is it extreme minimalism? Is it sustainable?

Here are 5 tips to help you deal with ten-item wardrobe burnout:

Tip no. 1 It's OK to update your wardrobe when you experience a burnout. Burnouts normally occur as you approach the end of a season. You might feel tired of wearing the same items over and over and feel like doing some major shopping. Rather than going on a shopping spree, know that it's OK to update your wardrobe with key items. Just make sure your purchases are intentional and fit into your wardrobe. You might buy a beautiful summer blouse to wear to replace a heavier one you had in your spring wardrobe, for example.

Tip no. 2 Shop your other seasons. Since you store away your out-of-season clothes with the ten-item wardrobe, sometimes going through those clothes to find any ways to update your wardrobe (with a cardigan or a scarf, for example) can help with burnout. This is also especially handy if the weather changes and you are in need of clothes to adapt to the change in temperature.

Tip no. 3 Get creative with how you wear your outfits. Pair your core items with different sweaters, scarves, shoes, and jewelry to freshen up your outfits. You could also style your hair differently or do your makeup and nails in a new way to fix the burnout you're experiencing.

Tip no. 4 Plan for the upcoming season. Sometimes burnout is just restlessness. You can help this restlessness by planning for the upcoming season. Go through your stored clothing and assess what you will keep or donate and make a list of what you'll need to update your ten-item wardrobe going forward. Sometimes the "business" of these actions really help when we feel restless.

Tip no. 5 Rest in your decision to do the ten-item wardrobe and allow your discontent to pass through you. Let the discontent go and remind yourself why you're doing the ten-item wardrobe in the first place. Think about how much better your life is now that you are intentional about your wardrobe. You are saving money, you are looking presentable always, you are exhibiting your true style, plus so much more. Rest in the choices you have made with your intentional and minimal wardrobe.

For more on each of these tips, check out today's video.

Addicted to Shopping? The Ten-Item Wardrobe Can Help

5:45 AM 0 Comments

In today's video, I discuss shopping addiction in relation to the ten-item wardrobe.

Here's my confession: I used to shop way too much. I loved shopping. I would always be browsing the stores, buying clothes and accessories and placing them in my closet. I loved the rush of buying something new. My wardrobe was very full. After I studied abroad in Paris and observed the ten-item wardrobe in action, I knew that there was a different way to live, but I didn't take any action upon my arrival back in the States. Why? Because old habits die hard!

But a few years later something changed. I realized I was wasting a lot of money. I also realized I never wore a large percentage of my wardrobe and still felt like I had nothing to wear when I opened it up each morning (even though I had so many clothes). I reminisced about the chic ten-item wardrobes I admired in Paris and knew that that was the path I had to take to break free from the thrill-seeking I got from clothes shopping.

I hope you enjoy today's video, which shares how the ten-item wardrobe can help you break free from poor shopping habits.

Nancy writes, "About Shakespeare's sonnets, I don't have to read them - I have done that many times in undergrad and grad school. I know my favorite easily, 130. That is a description of real love. It's funny but so true. I love his sonnets and how they are structured (similar to some Psalms) and his use of language is really without compare. Genius! I listened to Bolero while doing some house work and I almost naturally marched to the beat. : ) Working on the water and dining out doors soon. I love these assignments! They are fun and bring joy. I'm so glad you started them."

Hi Nancy, thank you for updating us on The Chic Assignment! I find that Boléro is a great piece to play when you need to be productive because the beat is so motivating. I find myself marching to it too :)

Thank you for joining us today and I'll see you next time for part 2 of this video, dealing with Ten-Item Wardrobe Burn-out.

On today's Natural Home with Jennifer I have a lovely natural cosmetics line to introduce to you: A'DEL Natural Cosmetics. I found them on Instagram and reached out to Arlene, the owner, to see if they would like to be featured on Natural Home with Jennifer.

I love discovering these beautifully crafted artisanal products. A'del Natural Cosmetics is a lovely small business that deserves attention. Arlene has been so generous to give us 20% off with the code TDC20 (this excludes the sale of sample sizes).

New Kitchen Reveal | Before & After | French Country Kitchen | Jennifer L. Scott

6:25 AM 18 Comments

When we bought our house nearly two years ago we knew we would have to ultimately redo the kitchen. Several appliances were malfunctioning, a few drawers were broken, and we were not happy with the decor... at all. When the most recent appliance broke (the stove), we decided it was time to redo the kitchen.

It took three weeks and what resulted is the most dramatic renovation Ben and I have ever done!

Here are a few shots of the kitchen before the remodel.

We are very grateful to have such a large kitchen. We did not like the darkness of the granite and the darker cabinets, however. We also had another conundrum... the seating in the kitchen was a major problem for us.

Ben, the girls, and I found ourselves sitting at the barstools to have our meals... we would usually be facing a sink of dishes. Meanwhile, the boys, would be in the high chair and another chair closer to the ground. We were all scattered, yet we didn't want to put a table next to the barstools because it would be too cluttered. With the really little kids we do not dine in our formal dining room everyday. With the upholstered chairs and carpet, it's just not practical. You will see our solution a few pictures down from here...

And here is the "after"

Ben and I were interested in grey cabinets. My mother-in-law recently renovated a flat in England (more on that later) with grey cabinets and she did such a beautiful job, it inspired us to do the same with our kitchen here. Funny enough, though we intended to have grey, the color really turned out to be blue. We love the shade and feel that is very unique. It is a custom mix so I do not have a name for this paint. Ben calls it "duck egg blue".

Here you can see the solution to our dining conundrum. We had our contractor create a built-in bench in the island where the barstools sat previously. Then we added a farmhouse table and bench on the other side (these are from Living Spaces). My friend, Lisa, gave me this idea after hearing about our seating problem. Thank you, Lisa, for this wonderful idea!

The countertops are white quartz and the backsplash is white subway tile. The grout we chose is rolling fog. I picked brass knobs and pulls after having a discussion with my lovely friend, Hilary from Old World Home. Hilary has excellent interior design sense and she thought brass would look smashing with the grey/blue cabinets. She was right!

The appliances are Kitchen Aid and the sink is cast iron Kohler. We were able to say on budget by keeping our cabinets and just replacing the doors. We are thrilled with our new kitchen and have been enjoying it immensely. I hope you enjoy today's video. I would love to hear your thoughts on our dramatic kitchen transformation!

The Chic Assignment June 2019 | Jennifer L. Scott

7:51 AM 6 Comments

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for June, 2019!

As we move into the summer season, I am looking forward to incorporating seasonal qualities to The Chic Assignments. I really enjoyed reading your experiences with the May assignment and can't wait to share this month's Assignments with you.

🎵 Chic Assignment no. 1 Listen: Maurice Ravel's Boléro This is the type of iconic piece that everyone should hear in its entirety at some point in their life. I am linking a YouTube video here with a performance from the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by the great Gustavo Dudamel. This is not the type of piece you will listen to every day. Even if you only listen to it once while puttering around the house, you've completed the assignment!

There is something mesmerizing about this music. My baby sat watching Gustavo Dudamel conducting and when the piece was over, he clapped! Talk about art appreciation!

📖 Chic Assignment no. 2 Read: A Shakespeare Sonnet

Shakespeare season is upon us: festivals, Shakespeare in the park.... there are many amazing opportunities to see performances, but many of us don't have the time or are not able to find a local production. This month we are going to find one Shakespeare sonnet and read it. One day, take a few minutes to sit down in your reading nook and read the sonnet. If it is difficult to understand (because, let's be honest, they often are!), look up a commentary on it. Let us know which Shakespeare sonnet you chose and how you enjoyed it! I'll be sharing mine during the mid-month check-in. Here is a wonderful resource which lists all of the Sonnets for you to read.

🍴 Chic Assignment no. 3 Dine al fresco Take the opportunity at least once this month to enjoy the fine weather and dine outside. Whether you take a coffee and a croissant on your balcony, or you have a dinner party outside, celebrate the spring/ summer transition by dining al fresco. For all of our Southern Hemisphere friends, dine in a way that celebrates the autumn/ winter season.

💧Chic Assignment no. 4 Drink more water I always need to work on this one... I have plenty of coffee and tea throughout the day, but when it comes to drinking water, I have to force myself to get anywhere near the recommended amount. Do you struggle with this too? Let's cheer each other on this month as we try to drink more water. I usually have a tall glass of water with lemon upon waking and this month I am going to try to drink my recommended amount each day. Here is an article that shares some of the many benefits to drinking enough water.
