The Chic Assignment November 2019

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for November, 2019. This month we are exploring German artists, Johann Sebastian Bach and Caspar David Friedrich. We are also looking at seasonal skincare and food, so let's jump in.

🎵 Chic Assignment no. 1: Listen to Bach Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major The Prelude is the most famous and recognizable portion of this brilliant piece, which will mesmerize and delight you all throughout the month.

Mischa Maisky plays Bach Cello Suite No.1 in G (full)

2. Allermande - 2:45
3. Courante - 7:09

🖼 Chic Assignment no. 2: Artist in residence: Caspar David Friedrich (5 September 1774 – 7 May 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation. We are going to study his works this month. Visit this website to see a list of his complete works.

We will mainly focus on studying Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (image from Wikipedia)

You can buy a canvas reproduction of Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog here.

🛀 Chic Assignment no. 3: Adjust our seasonal skincare. If you are happy with your routine, then carry on and truly enjoy your nightly skincare ritual. If you need to make seasonal adjustments, do so and delight in them. I'm going through a skincare change myself and will be sharing that on the channel this month.

🥧 Chic Assignment no. 4: Cook (or bake) and enjoy a seasonal dish from scratch. With Thanksgiving approaching in America, this will be a very easy assignment for many. Let's delight in the autumnal recipes available to us and take part in a delightful meal. Whether you bake a pumpkin pie, or make your favorite savory stuffing, make a seasonal dish from scratch and savor not only the eating of the dish, but the preparation also.

I hope you enjoy today's video. I would love to hear your Chic Assignment updates below.

Day 24: Do not interrupt your child when he is talking. • • I love my little guy’s chats. The only thing I can’t get behind is the long winded play-by-plays of Minecraft 😆, but I try to humor him and redirect his attention. First Chapter of Connoisseur Kids already has us engaged! We are doing the eye contact assignment and it fit perfectly with today’s mom challenge. Whenever he and I are feeling a little “off” we have a read-aloud and a “night chat” before he goes to bed. Just giving him my full attention with eye contact, until he drifts to sleep, does wonders for him. I know he sometimes feels a little ignored after being the only child for over 5 years and my getting so busy with the baby. It’s good medicine for both of us. #30daymomchallenge #cultivatingmotherhood #connoisseurkids #gentleparenting #eyecontact #dailyconnoisseur #habittraining #intentionalmotherhood #motherculture

That Yo-Yo Ma video is beautiful!

I love the chic assignment this month. I've recently found a new favourite recipe blogger. Linda Lomelino, who has a blog called Call Me Cupcake. If you want a fun alternative to a classic pumpkin or apple pie, I recently made an apple pear hazelnut galette from her site that is spectacularly good: https://www.callmecupcake.se/2018/09/apple-pear-galette-with-hazelnut-frangipane.html Her blog is stunning. I like to browse it to just look at her food photography. I have one of her recipe books, and it's a work of art. Just looking though it is pleasurable, and all the recipes are fantastic too. I'm wishing for her pie recipe book for Christmas.

I love the sublime works of Friederich and was fortunate enough to see this little masterpiece when I was at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg this year. It is quite a small painting, less than a meter high but so evocative. It hangs next to his stunning icescape, Sea of ice, whose cold, sharp shards of ice rise out of the frozen sea. It is only when you look closely that you see the wreck of the ship the Hope, crushed and being subsumed by the relentless ice. Such powerful paintings side by side. Such a treat.
I am about to make my Christmas puddings this week, so this is a very timely assignment for me. Thank you.

Thank you for the beautiful piece of music. The artist Friederich is amazing, I hope to visit Europe someday soon. I was in Colorado this summer and I understand why Georgia O’Keeffe paints in this area. Jennifer thank you for your chic assignments, look forward to them every month.

Hi, Jennifer- Here is an interesting twist for you: Last spring I decided to introduce my 14 year old daughter to the 10 item wardrobe and the concept of looking presentable always. I had her watch several of your videos as part of her schoolwork (we homeschool), but she just didn't seem to taken with them (they were "mom videos"), so I dropped that idea.

Fast forward to this fall, and I am watching one of your videos and laughing (because I have so been there), when my daughter comes by and asks me what is so funny. I told her, "Remember the 10 item wardrobe lady?" Well, she had a laundry accident..."
And my daughter said, "Oh, yeah- the Draper James dress. That was pretty funny."

WELL. I did not say anything further, but then a few days later she was all excited because part of the November Chic Assignment is a painting that also happens to be on the cover of the copy of Frankenstein she is reading for school.

It turns out that she has been watching your channel all this time and really enjoying it. She is now 15, and now we often watch your videos together. This just shows you that you never know what happens to the seeds you plant. You never know who you are reaching and in what ways. Thank you for your wonderful and fun channel- you have definitely reached us here, and we enjoy it so much!
