Children Crash BBC Interview + My Stressful TEDx Moment | Teatime with Jennifer

8:15 AM 18 Comments

Thank you for all of your great comments on Monday's ten-item wardrobe prep video. It was a fun video to shoot and I look forward to sharing the rest of my process with you.

In today's episode of Teatime with Jennifer, we are discussing the viral video that is being called the funniest video of the year. In it, Korean politics expert, Robert Kelly, was giving an interview to the BBC when his commentary was interrupted by his adorable children. If you haven't seen the video, check it out before watching my Teatime video. It will make much more sense to you! Check out the viral video here from the BBC.

In today's chat, we talk about the challenges of working from home, my thoughts on the hilarious video and my own stressful on-camera moment from my TEDx talk.

Articles discussed in the video:

The Daily Mail article, The Telegraph article, Anatomy of a Masterpiece and my TEDx talk on the ten-item wardrobe.

Also, Robert Kelly released this statement on his blog yesterday clearing up some of the confusion.

Comment of the Week
Sheila writes: Thank you for the reminder that we don't need to be fashionistas and follow the trends. I started thinking about my spring/summer wardrobe a few weeks ago and fell into the 'what's in style' rabbit hole - when in fact I have nearly enough presentable options already in my closet. I've minimized quite a bit over the last few years but have never taken the plunge into true 10 item wardrobe. I think this may finally be the year! Thank you again for a much needed dose of reality.

Hello Sheila, I always get so excited for people who are about to embark on the ten-item wardrobe. You can do it! Please return and let us know how it goes for you.

Question of the Week
Alice writes: I am a 70-year-old retiree. Over the winter, I have fallen into the habit of wearing my flannel "granny" gowns and robes throughout the days when I know that I won't be going out. (I am a real nester and stay inside whenever possible during cold weather.) I purchased 3 dresses for winter that were really expensive and beautiful. I want them to last forever. So, here is my problem: I don't want to wear them around the house because I want them to look fresh and new always. Now, when I put one of them on, I feel so good. They are all comfortable, they're actually the same style, and I enjoy how I look in them. How do I get over this mindset that they must be "saved" for when I go out? Mostly, the only "person" who sees me at home in these dresses is my dog Jax, but he really doesn't care what I wear. He likes me just fine in anything. How do I get past this and enjoy these beautiful dresses on a daily basis? Have you confronted this strange problem before?

Hello Alice, thank you for your comment. Your problem isn't strange, it's actually quite common! Most people, including myself, are afflicted with this desire to save our best things for later. The only way to get over this is to force yourself to use your best every day. It will feel awkward at first, but force yourself to wear your nice dresses, even if you have nowhere to go. Eventually it will become a habit and you will see the folly of your old ways. You will notice that you will feel better and little things in your life will start to change. Even if your dog, Jax, is the only one to see you each day, you will notice an internal change. Please try it out and come back to let us know how you do!

I hope you enjoy today's episode of Teatime! I would love to know... what did you think about the viral video? Did you find it as funny as I did? Do you work from home? Have you had any stressful work-from-home moments? Have you had any stressful or embarrassing things happen to you in a public forum? Let me know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

See you on Monday for a Shop with Me Ten-Item Wardrobe video!

My NYC Trip & TEDx Experience

7:10 PM 11 Comments

I had such an amazing time in New York. I just got back this evening. Reflecting on the last few days I feel a combination of many things: humbled, excited, motivated and inspired. This past week I got to meet the team of people at both Trident Media Group and Simon & Schuster who work so hard to bring the Madame Chic books to fruition. These dedicated people are the ultimate professionals and also so chic! Seeing my agent, Erica Silverman, again and meeting my editor, Trish Todd, for the first time was an extra special treat.

Part of the amazing team at Simon & Schuster (not everyone is pictured). They threw me a tea party!

The TEDx talk on Saturday was the perfect finale to my New York trip. I relished the opportunity to meet so many interesting people and hear their ideas and inspired talks. As soon as I have a video of my talk I will be sure to post it and share it with you. Thank you for your supportive comments on social media. I felt as though you were right there with me on stage!

For my talk I wore this vintage inspired polka dot dress from Tory Burch (both dresses featured in the video are sneak peeks into my Fall/ Winter ten-item wardrobe).

I had my hair done for the day in an art- deco inspired chignon.

Madame Chic Inspiring Thought
Don't be nervous to share your ideas. The world is in need of your thoughts. Remember ideas can be shared by actions as well as with words. TEDx talks are about "ideas worth spreading". What ideas would you like to spread? Let me know in the comment section below or on social media using the hashtag #MADAMECHIC

Who knows... you might be picked as the comment of the week!

Comment of the Week
Catherine writes:
Hi Jennifer. I am a faithful reader of your blog and loved your book. I've attended estate sales for several years, many which are held when the elderly homeowners pass away. Looking through the clothing, it's remarkable how many women hold onto items for decades. Closets are packed full with clothes, shoes and accessories. This seems perpetuated today even more with the marketing of large walk-in closets which women are sold on the fantasy of filling with an abundance of clothing (never mind where these clothes are made. No union label, Made in the USA tags on today's clothes like the ones at estate sale clothing from decades ago). Thank you for encouraging women to give their unwanted clothes a new life and for promoting living with less. Donation is so important. I love clothing swaps and charity shops to pass items on.

See you soon! xx

End of Summer Chat: Ten-Item Wardrobe, NYC Trip & More

4:45 PM 18 Comments

It's time to assess your ten-item wardrobe as we head into the changing season. Go through your clothes. Is anything looking shabby? Were there any mistake purchases that you've learned from? Any outfits you loved that you'll hold on to for next year? Can you challenge yourself to part with clothes you know you need to donate?

This is the fun part! I love the end of season edit. Join me in this video as I share a peek into my own process and help me say goodbye to a very beloved garment.

This week I also talk about my upcoming New York trip as well as blog plans for the coming months. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of my blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Madame Chic Inspiring Thought
Many people put a lot of thought into the rituals at dinnertime but what about breakfast? The importance of ritual at breakfast is not to be scoffed at. Here's a charming article on 9 Breakfast Tips and Tricks from 19th Century Etiquette Books that I know you'll get a kick out of. My favorite tip is #9. What's yours? (Thank you to my friend, Cynthia, for sharing this article with me).

Comment of the Week
I'm starting a new feature on the blog called the "comment of the week". Each and every day you give such amazing feedback and contribute to the high quality of this blog community with your comments and input whether on this blog, the YouTube channel, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. I want to honor you by posting my favorite comment of the week on the blog for all to see.

This week's comment comes from Marianne from the post, Cultivating Poise. Marianne says:

"Here is my take on poise… not only is it free it's a bankable asset. The better jobs offered in the corporate world require poise. Working on your poise can help get you the added responsibility, the promotion and more money in your bank account."

This week I would love to know... what are the plans for your Fall/ Winter ten-item wardrobe (spring/ summer for our southern hemisphere friends)? Where are you in the process? Have you done a wardrobe purge yet? Do you need help or are you finding the process easy and fun (and liberating!)? #TenItemWardrobe

Madame Chic Inspiring Thought

I firmly believe that we can all be Madame Chic: our own unique very best version of ourselves. I am going to start a new way to end the blog each week with a Madame Chic inspiring thought. I hope you enjoy this! Today's inspiring thought is:

The manifestation of a rose is a magnificent thing. Here is my first double delight of the season from the container garden on my patio. When you are out walking today try to get out of your mind. Don't focus on your problems or your to-do list, put your phone in your pocket. Take note of the beauty in the landscaping around you, even if is only a tiny weed flower poking out of the concrete. Appreciate nature and be in the now.

I would love to hear from you... how do you like the makeup look? If you try it out send me a picture on social media with the hashtag #lenomakeuplook. As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts on everything else like TEDx, #VulgarityNoMore and Madame Chic inspiring thought.
