In part 2 of how to keep it classy in a trashy society, we explore more coping mechanisms for big decisions and daily life.

My first post on the subject was popular and stirred up quite a discussion on YouTube and the blog.



Before we begin, I would like to address two things:

1. When I say "trashy", I am referring to the behavior, not the person.

2. The use of the word "classy" is also deliberate. There really is no other word to replace this, and I use the two in juxtaposition intentionally on these articles.

5 More Ways to Keep it Classy in a Trashy Society (Part 2)

👑 Don’t subscribe to groupthink Be an individual and think and act for yourself. Peer pressure is hard, no matter what stage of life you are in. Don’t subscribe to group think. In today's video I give you three examples of how not to blindly follow the herd if it doesn't feel right for you. The key here is to align yourself with people who have your same values and life goals.

👑 Don’t choose celebrities as your role models. Of course, this doesn’t apply to every celebrity, but if you think about Hollywood, celebrities are often desperate to remain relevant. Because of this, they will do and post outlandish things to remain in the headlines. This never translates well in real life. Instead of looking to certain celebrities for role models, find real life role models who inspire you with the elegant way they live.

👑 Live your real life way more than you do your virtual one. I recently published a video called, 10 Ways to Keep it Classy on Social Media. If you struggle in this area, I highly recommend you watch that video. With social media so addictive and prevalent, people are completely attached to their phones and their virtual reality personas. Instead of constantly chasing the likes and follows, ditch social media on a regular basis. Detach from it. Refrain from posting so much. Keep it classy by living your real life more than your virtual one.

👑 Embrace community. For the most part here I am talking about family life. We’ve all become disconnected with each other. When dinnertime arrives are you all sitting down together at the table enjoying a relaxed dinner and lively conversation? (no phones, no TV on in the background?) Or is everyone in their own room eating their dinner in front of their computers? Classy people connect with others and have a joie de vivre about them. They embrace the present and enjoy the finer things in life, which, by the way, are mainly experiences. So yes, a Tuesday evening dinner with your family could be an experience categorized as a finer thing in life.

👑 Embrace formalities. Be a refreshing contrast to our overly casual society and stand out for your formalities. Formal manners, dressing, and behavior aren't old and stuffy mannerisms. Embracing formalities will help you stand out from the crowd and give you an elegant boost to your life.

A Michigan teacher came under fire for wearing a sweatshirt with a controversial message on Columbus Day, WXYZ reports.

Emma Howland-Bolton, a fifth-grade teacher at Clippert Multicultural Magnet Honors Academy in the Detroit Public Schools Community District, walked into school on Monday wearing a sweatshirt that read, "Columbus was a murderer."

"I wanted to wear this shirt to spark discussion," she told the station.

A school administrator took notice of the message and asked her to take the sweatshirt off.

"I was informed that my shirt was my opinion and I countered with it is a fact," the teacher explained.

Welcome to a highly unusual day in my life. I'm driving into fire territory today in Los Angeles to film a podcast, visit a dear friend for lunch, and then return to my family and a very special package in the mail.



Getting up before the rest of my family is really necessary in order to have a successful day. When I sleep later, I always feel as though I am playing catch-up. Today was a good day as I was able to get up, spend quiet time alone, get dressed and even get some work done.

Hello my Daily Connoisseurs, in today’s video I’m going to share the secret to a Homemaker’s Success. Can you guess what it is?



Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. My name is Jennifer and I am a wife, mother of four, a writer, and yes, a homemaker. I enjoy exploring the world of homemaking on this channel because the life of a homemaker is complex and oftentimes hidden.

Today I’m going to share the secret to a Homemaker’s success.

Delighting in the mundane tasks of your day.



Yes, delighting in the mundane. What does mundane mean? There are two definitions:

1. lacking interest or excitement; dull.

2. of this earthly world rather than a heavenly or spiritual one.

Basically, it’s the everyday tasks that we associate with drudgery. We would rather be doing more glamorous or exciting things than our mundane tasks: washing the dishes, folding laundry, wiping countertops, ironing clothes, making beds. It can all be so mundane.

“The world is so full of a great many things” as Robert Louis Stevenson said. Everyone else seems to be leading such an exciting life. Why am I stuck here doing these mundane tasks over and over again?



Well, the things you do most in life, are the most important. Did you ever think about it like that? Think about how many hours of our lives we devote to these tasks. They take up a significant portion of our life. We might as well change our attitude about them.

The secret to successful homemaking is delighting in the mundane. Focus on the task you’re doing and simply delight in it. Change your mind about it. Change your perspective. Imagine your delight if you were on your way to lunch with a good friend, you would be looking forward to it. You would dress nicely and have a cheerful attitude. You wouldn’t be dreading it at all.

And while at the lunch, you would enjoy every moment. We should capture some of that energy when we face our daily tasks. Now, of course, we are not going to be doing jumping jacks of joy when we clean the kitchen for the third time each day, but over time, if we can accept the present circumstances and enjoy that mundane task, we can truly start to change our lives.

🛀 Chic Assignment no. 3: Adjust our seasonal skincare. If you are happy with your routine, then carry on and truly enjoy your nightly skincare ritual. If you need to make seasonal adjustments, do so and delight in them. I'm going through a skincare change myself and will be sharing that on the channel this month.

🥧 Chic Assignment no. 4: Cook (or bake) and enjoy a seasonal dish from scratch. With Thanksgiving approaching in America, this will be a very easy assignment for many. Let's delight in the autumnal recipes available to us and take part in a delightful meal. Whether you bake a pumpkin pie, or make your favorite savory stuffing, make a seasonal dish from scratch and savor not only the eating of the dish, but the preparation also.

Day 24: Do not interrupt your child when he is talking. • • I love my little guy’s chats. The only thing I can’t get behind is the long winded play-by-plays of Minecraft 😆, but I try to humor him and redirect his attention. First Chapter of Connoisseur Kids already has us engaged! We are doing the eye contact assignment and it fit perfectly with today’s mom challenge. Whenever he and I are feeling a little “off” we have a read-aloud and a “night chat” before he goes to bed. Just giving him my full attention with eye contact, until he drifts to sleep, does wonders for him. In today's video I'm sharing 10 Ways to Keep it Classy on Social Media. Social networks are constantly evolving and the etiquette for this field is ever-changing. Today's video is meant to act as a guide to keep social media usage on the healthy side. I am looking forward to reading about your experiences using social media below.



Here are my best tips for keeping it classy on social media:

👑 Don’t overshare Avoid over-posting on social media. Keep it classy by living your real life way more than your virtual one. Detox from social media if this is something you struggle with. You don’t need to update the world on your day several times a day. Save some things. Hold them back.

👑 Be mindful of what you do share Be careful sharing pictures of partying and/or drunken antics, swear words, etc. You never know how they will come back to haunt you later.

👑 Don’t tag people without asking permission first We have all been tagged in a picture where we look highly unflattering. If you plan to post a picture on social media, it's good manners to run it by everyone else first.

👑 Consider your children’s privacy We all love our children and think they are the greatest, best-looking, smartest kids in the whole world (I think that about mine ☺️), but that does not mean we need to post everything about them on social media. Guard their privacy. If your children are older, ask how they feel before you post something about them. If they are too young to understand the implications, just consider erring on the side of privacy.

👑 Don’t steal someone else’s thunder Are you a guest at a wedding? Don’t even think about posting a picture of the bride before she herself posts. Someone in the family is pregnant? Don’t announce you’re going to be an aunty before the couple announces the baby. Your relative just got an amazing new job? Don't break the news before they do. In short, don't steal someone's thunder on social media.

👑 Don't be reactive I've learned this one the hard way. For many years, on social media, when I received a direct attack, I would not only respond, but react. I try not to do that anymore. It never looks good and it isn't classy behavior. To be a class act, keep your cool and don't be reactive. If someone leaves me a negative comment now, I generally ignore them.

👑 Don’t overly promote your business on your personal page It's totally fine to mention your work and business every now and then. Certainly celebrate accomplishments and milestones, but if you plan to promote your business on a daily basis, consider starting up a separate business page. Many people go on social media to connect with friends and family and they don't want to be marketed to all the time.

👑 Don’t post passive aggressive posts If you have a problem with someone, but you are afraid of confrontation, avoid posting passive aggressive posts about the person or the situation. We've all seen that vague, yet sarcastic meme that we know is a dig at someone. Avoid the drama. If you have a problem with someone, go to them directly with your problem. Don't take to social media first.

👑 Don’t be a troll The internet can make us feel bolder than we would in real life. Many times people will casually say something on social media they wouldn’t dare say to someone’s face. Don’t be a troll. If you have a complaint, make it in a polite way. No all caps, name calling and 10 exclamation marks please.

👑 Don’t make yourself look totally different than you actually look We all use filters. I use them too. They can brighten up an image and yes, make you look better. But don’t go overboard. We’ve all seen strongly filtered and/ or photoshopped images of people. It totally alters the way they look. To keep it classy, embrace how you really look. You’re handsome and you’re beautiful just the way you are.
